House of Gucci (2021)
Well made but with some poor editing choices
I'd heard mixed reviews on this but being a loyal RS fan, i thought to pay my dues. This is overall an excellent film; well cast, scripted, photographed. It is exciting, intriguing, and at time fun. There is little humour but then RS doesn't do humour easily. The story is encaptivating and Gaga's performance is outstanding and believable . I marked it down 2 stars for 2 reasons; 1) the earlier scenes were 'snatched'. The editor didn't have the courage to hold the reaction of Jeremy Irons at the end of the showdown and other early scenes were choppy particularly at the payoff; it's a sin to cut into performance for the sake of time. 2) The choice of 'found' music was poor; Using Faith over the wedding was dreadful, not only is Faith late eighties , it's totally out of keeping for not only the period but also the style of the movie. And RS extensive use of opera in his films has become tiresome, I'm like here we go again. I'm not against opera but less is more is the operative principle here. I'd like to see RS fill his scenes with something other than smoke. Finally the colour grading was very unsubtle, again due to the editor and being able to grade on the fly when that task should be left to specially trained timers in the lab. The mix was generally very good but as usual, the crew are so used to the dialogue that many important words get lost in the mix; they forget an audience only gets one shot. Overall a great movie, well done RS but next time hire Pietro !
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Most watched
I've seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest many times and each time it speaks to me through a different voice. Today I watched it. I had no intention of watching it but I watched it and it was as if I'd never seen it before of if I had it was in a different life. When RPM call her Mildred after his electro shock, the reaction on the assistant nurse and Mildred are so subtle yet profound yet I'd never noticed it before. There were many instances like this today. This film is limitless in it's giving and also it's heart.
Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day (2012)
Sonically staggering.
Just returned from seeing Led Zepplin's celebration day at Hammersmith Odeon. The film is simply phenomenal, the sound out of this world. Thank you to all involved for blowing the mind of a man who thought he'd seen and heard it all. Thank you to Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones for showing up to introduce the film. Will definitely be going again and again to see this one. Visually the camera work and editing leaves nothing to be desired although I wouldn't have used those square CGI's; they were an unnecessary distraction. The film is emotionally charged right out the gate and caused my eyes to well up through the first two songs. Throughout the film I sat with my hands together as if in prayer, my body occasionally moving in time.
The sound mix is near perfect, I wouldn't change a thing although there was one song I would revisit where the guitar was noticeably lowered to accommodate Robert, this could be more subtle. (I'd have to see it again to be sure though) Actually the mix is perfect. It is brilliantly thought through with incredible attention paid to the emotional value of Led Zeppelin. My hat is off to all involved, you should all be tremendously proud of creating a master piece which will, for all time, set in celluloid the legend of Led Zeppelin.
