Supernatural: Let It Bleed (2011)
Great Show Hate What Comes After
I know Dean says Lisa and Ben are never to be talked about again, but the show almost LITERALLY never talks about them again.
There is so much that ties back to this time when Dean tried to have a normal life and built these relationships. The time that Sam does the same thing while Dean is in Purgatory. All the one million times we explore why this is the life the boys always choose. There is so much that is explored here and then left to be forgotten for the next 9 seasons.
I get for all that comes until around season 10 when even Cass is exploring Claire and "The Things We Left Behind" and we are still not talking about Lisa and Ben, it makes me a little crazy. Like the Mandela effect or something. Like I saw Sinbad playing a genie when we get farther along. It is frustrating.
Supernatural: LARP and the Real Girl (2013)
The Sam Sacrifice
So, this whole season has lead us back and forth through time and to the present where Sam finally gives up Amelia for good. This is all fine and it is nice to see what Sam would be like in a normal environment, but episodes like this drive me crazy where the writers only go so far back in time. Do we need to evoke Lisa and Ben's names? No, I get that it may not be great, but for Dean to not even give a, "I've been there; I get it." is very annoying.
The story with Charlie and the LARPing was a fun story and I love having strong female characters in the show.
Overall, this episode is good and I'm glad Sam and Dean buried this latest beef in a fun way this time.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Fool for Love (2000)
Backstory Flashback with Texture
I generally HATE flashbacks. They are usually for a fan that doesn't understand the other better devices that flush out a character or move forward a story, but this one has everything. It ties together holes, it flushes out multiple characters without creating more holes, and it moves the story about Spike and the Spike and Buddy relationship forward.
It is truly great. I look forward to this episode every rewatch. The foursome coming together, the siring of Spike are so fun to watch. They took care where necessary to make it feel thematic and of the right era and hid where production would be too expensive well.
The B story of Riley and the gang patrolling is the comedic counterpoint we all need for this fantastically written episode.
Criminal Minds: JJ (2010)
JJ and Penelope
Best part of this episode is tied between the continued highlight of JJ and Penelope's relationship and the use of Ray Lamontagne. I loved that there was a woman relationship that didn't make sense but was so close. That is how work relationships in real life are. Two people that shouldn't get along and could even be competitive end up being friends and relying on each other in hard times. The episode before was very clever to show Jennifer being the hero of the story and then showing her forced departure creating a real void in the motherly, organized voice of the team. I also love the soundtrack as mentioned before.
