The Cell (2000)

Avoid getting caught in this cell

I hesitated in my decision to see this film because it had Jennifer Lopez. I never really liked her as an actress because she always seemed to try too hard.

Touted as the best film of the summer in 2000, "The Cell" is nothing more than special effects and visually stunning set designs gone wrong. There was nothing in this film that was appealing. With each setting, it seemed like the designers got better at creating the backdrop for where the story took place; however, the settings don't make the movie. Vince Vaughn, Vincent D'Onorfio join Lopez to do their best in making "The Cell" the best movie of the year.

The biggest reason for its failure was the complexity of the plot. I couldn't understand what the writer was trying to bring across from scene to scene. It seemed liked it dragged on longer than it had to. Besides the drawn out and complex plot, the ending to "The Cell" was so tedious it was laughable.

"The Cell" did serve one purpose: it can now be distributed to film schools for students who want to become directors as a lesson in film-making on what not to do.

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999)

a comedic success

Rob Schneider is not known for his acting but he proved that he can perform with the rest of them in "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo." This might be his best film to date because he is what makes this film come alive along with the rest of his castmates.

I liked this movie so much that it hurt me every time I laughed. This was a film that should be used as a model for true laughter and comedy because the jokes were clean and funny at the same time. Schneider co-wrote this film that introduced a plot that was so funny, which had a sweet underlying plot that I found to be very enjoyable to watch.

My favorite scene in this whole movie involved the blind date with the woman who could not control her mouth. You will have to watch the movie to understand what I'm talking about.

The whole cast was incredible as they all turned in superb performances. It also seemed they were having fun with one another on the set and it showed in their performances, which is one thing I look for in a good film.

"Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo" cracked me up and should be watched by everyone.

Cradle Will Rock (1999)

Tim Robbins fails

What was Tim Robbins thinking when he decided to direct "Cradle Will Rock" because it is a movie that was flawed from the beginning. In fact, it was so awful that it doesn't deserve to be reviewed. There is only one positive thing that came from watching this movie; telling other prospective viewers that "Cradle Will Rock" is a waste of time and money.

There were many things about "Cradle Will Rock" in this film that I found to be terrible. However, there were two that stood out as the worst parts of the film. The first was the pointless storyline the writers came up with. The second were the performances of every actor involved with the making of this movie. I can hope that viewers will stay away from "Cradle Will Rock."

Cruel Intentions (1999)

devilishly good

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, and Reese Witherspoon star in this wonderful sick and twisted tale called "Cruel Intentions" about making everyone's life as miserable as possible.

In this film, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillipe star as Katherine and Sebastian who are brother and sister and they play games on people filled with cruelty and deceit. When Sebastian reads an article written by Annette Hargrove played by Reese Witherspoon, he proposes a bet that entices his step-sister. The bet is to get Annette to break her virginity with Sebastian; the terms are if Katherine wins she gets his prized car, and if Sebastian wins he gets a night in bed with his step-sister.

Can we say that we have sick and twisted terms to bet with? I think we can safely say that. I was wowed when I saw how Reese Witherspoon subtly played her character with innocence but still knows what is going on. As the movie progressed I was angry at the characters because of what they were doing to everyone; they didn't care who they were hurting. This is a sign of a good movie in my opinion. Ryan Phillipe and Sarah Michelle Gellar knew exactly what each other's moves and thoughts.

Also, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon brought magic to the screen that I haven't seen since I saw At First Sight earlier this year with Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino, and I have seen a lot of movies since then. I think we can safely assume that Ryan and Reese were in simpatico together. Sebastian eventually gains feelings for his intended target and begins to have second thoughts about going through with the bet. I like this element because it shows that anyone can change. There are several sub plots to "Cruel Intentions" but they are not as much fun to watch as the main plot.

I was in awe in how well Sarah Michelle Gellar played her character. Known to children as Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar is fighting on the side of good, but here we have another side to an already talented actress; she plays evil so well, I'm very happy to see that she can play a variety of different personalities. I also liked Ryan Phillipe's performance because of the way he carried himself. His body language and movements, dialogue and dialect are so excellent he can pass them off as how he really is.

"Cruel Intentions" was an entertaining film that had a twist added on to the ending that made me go away with a smile on my face.

Dinosaur (2000)

a beautifully made gem

"Dinosaur" is a movie that will touch the heart of everyone young and old who watches it.

"Dinosaur" is a feel good movie that was excellent from beginning to end. I can't believe how this movie moved me. From the touching friendship between two different species of animals to exhilarating special effects, "Dinosaur" is a film that deserves consideration for an academy award.

With celebrity voices such as D.B. Sweeney, Ossie Davis, Alfre Woodard, "Dinosaur" has truly become one of favorite films of the year.

I highly recommend this film and ask everyone see this film not once, not twice but at least three times because the special effects are awesome, the plot is unique and the setting is among one of the prettiest sights I've seen on the screen in a while.

The Cider House Rules (1999)

Avoid at all costs

"The Cider House Rules" disappointed me greatly because after 30 minutes in the movie theater, I wanted to leave because it was told in such a one dimensional fashion.

I must have dozed off during the film and woke up at the end when the film was at the best point. There was more than plot going on in this film that really cost it from being a spectacular film. On one hand, we have Homer Wells the orphan who has not seen the world helping his fellow orphans as a doctor's assistant; on the other hand, we have Homer Wells who is viewing the world while having an affair with an engaged lady.

Tobey Maguire, Chalize Theron, Michael Caine ad Delroy Lindo couldn't have saved this film no matter how hard they tried. I blame the writer and the director for this failure to communicate to me what the point was and make it clear enough for me to understand the plot.

The Deep End of the Ocean (1999)

Don't go near this ocean

"The Deep End Of The Ocean" was a movie that was supposed to bring tears from people's eyes but the director failed to do so and it sunk in the ocean after thirty minutes after it left port.

"The Deep End Of The Ocean" stars Treat Williams, Michelle Pfieffer, and Jonathan Jackson. The cast billing is better than the film itself; and that says a lot for the writers and director. I was disappointed in Michelle Pfieffer as it seemed her performance was sub-par and seemed to be at the level of a beginner.

"The Deep End Of The Ocean" was based around a kidnapping, no real mystery or suspense to speak of or no real tears came from my face. I mean if the director wants to make a movie surrounding this type of situation I would think that there should be more sentimental moments and cut out the arguments with the child that was kidnapped about what he should and should not do. The only thing that people should bring is a bag so they could put it over their heads to avoid watching it.

Treat Williams really is the only actor worth recognizing in this bad mess they call a movie; though, there are good parts in this movie. Williams, your typical villain, plays Pat Cappadora the husband and father who keeps the family together after Ben was kidnapped. When, the mother was near a breakdown it was the father who held everything together and eventually was the one who snapped his wife into reality again. My only other favorite scene occurred between the two brothers.

I wouldn't force this film on anyone, though it did have its moments.

Cop Land (1997)

Sly is in unique form in a great film

"Cop Land" is a must see film that everyone must watch. Sylvester Stallone is in rare form as he delivers an outstanding performance as the local sheriff in "Copland."

"Cop Land" is the type of movie that would probably appeal only to certain people such as those who like a certain actor or enjoy thrillers.

I happen to be a member of both categories because I like all the actors and I enjoy thrillers. I noticed how similar this was to "Heat", which starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

This is a slow paced movie that works. I do not think this movie could have worked if it went in a faster pace. Stallone did such a great job he proves that he is more than an action star.

Supporting Stallone in "Cop Land," are Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick, Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro. Each one of these actors provide a unique spark that no other have and when put together in one movie will guarantee a really good film.

Daylight (1996)

One of Sly's best performances

Fasten your seatbelts and brace yourself for an non-stop thrill ride that will have you holding your breath from start to finish.

"Daylight" is one of the most intense movies I have seen in a long time. Sylvester Stallone gives one of his best performances in "Daylight" leading a group of civilians to safety after a New York tunnel engulfs in flames. Stallone works his magic as a former EMS chief sent in to save these civilians.

When I heard Stallone's name mentioned as part of the cast of "Daylight," I knew it would be a non-stop thrill ride; however, what I didn't realize it would be a thriller that had depth mixed in with everything else. "Daylight" is a credit to Stallone's ability and this remains one of his best roles to date.

Adding to this awesome film are Stallone's co-stars, which include Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Jay O. Sanders and Stan Shaw. I enjoyed watching this ensemble work together because they seem to need no direction when on screen. It was as if they were really trapped in the tunnel. From the fear to the heroic actions they took, these actors were top notch.

Despite most thrillers, "Daylight" stands out as being the finest assembled film. The casting works like magic, the special effects are magnificent and the script is perfect.

I concede that "Daylight" is predictable. However, I disagree with those who say it hurts the film. My point is it doesn't matter whether a film is predictable, rather how it is presented. "Daylight" is presented with quite unique special effects, a plot with depth and endearing performances.

In addition to the excellent performances, "Daylight" had some of the best special effects I have seen. The explosion at the beginning of the movie was a work of art. I was in awe of how well the special effects were pulled off because I don't believe that "Daylight" would have worked as well as it did if they were done with less than 100 percent effort.

"Daylight" will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you holding your breath hoping these citizens come out alive.

Defending Your Life (1991)

Awesome and heart-warming

Albert Brooks definitely gives us his take on the afterlife. After watching movies such as "Chances Are" "Ghost" and "Heart and Souls" afterlife hasn't looked better. Brooks is a comedic genius but not only as an actor but a writer and director as well.

In addition, Brooks was joined in this film by Rip Torn and Meryl Streep, who are phenomenal talents of their own. Their additions to the movie makes it that much funnier and dramatically better.

Aside from "What Dreams May Come," "Defending Your Life" is the best afterlife film I've seen because it is different than all the others. Brooks is a relief since his comedy is genuinely funny.

This movie was a joy to watch because of the fun cast, unique plot and fun loving environment. Brooks, the writer, created the script with laughter in mind and enjoyment in his heart.

The setting of "Defending Your Life" was very creative because it seemed so unique yet so real and true to life on earth. I was very impressed by the set designers at what they came up with to use as sets.

Brooks created each scene with humor and wanted the film to be as original as possible. He succeeded because I enjoyed and laughed throughout the film and only original films do that for me.

"Defending Your Life" will go down movie history as one of the more original and funnier films dealing with the afterlife. This is a must see for everyone.

Jawbreaker (1999)

An awful film any way you watch it

"Jawbreaker" only has two good qualities: the performances of the three lead actresses and the storyline albeit doesn't lead the viewer in any direction but out of the theatre. The director of this movie must have been thinking of something else because he doesn't develop nor present this new and great plot into anything but mush.

Rebecca Gayheart and Rose McGowan are both terrific in their roles. Gayheart as the good girl and McGowan as the villainous girl. Rose McGowan was superb because she was in a role that was familiar to her. McGowan is so good in fact that she made me angry and felt like going through the screen and strangling her to death.

If the writer's added a bit of mystery to this film like covering up the identity of the killers; it would become more enjoyable and interesting if it end up this way. I cannot in good faith recommend this movie.

There's Something About Mary (1998)

There's definitely something about this film that draws one to watch it

There's definitely something about this film. When I saw this film, I was thinking of The Wedding Singer because both movies were set relatively the same time and both lead actresses happened to be blonde.

I thought Ben Stiller played an excellent character in Ted as he tried locate the girl he had a crush on in high school. Cameron Diaz was superb in her role as Mary and the actor who played her brother was an excellent addition to the movie because he played his part as a disabled man really well. I'm not a real huge Matt Dillon fan and his role in this movie didn't do much to change my mind. He was very despicable as the sleazy private investigator who has the task of tracking the high school crush down; however, what he doesn't tell Ted when he does find her makes this film more interesting.

Who would think that this film has twists that would blow the audience away; it does and not just one, it has two. These twists are really something of a shock, especially to me who was not expecting it to occur the way it did.

Overall, this film was enjoyable I wouldn't mind seeing it a second time.

Almost Heroes (1998)

an enjoyable movie

From the opening credits, I had a smile on my face because of the graphic and introduction the film gives its viewing audience. I thought to myself what a delight it is to see a film where your mind does not have to stress over thinking of who did what to whom.

This was Chris Farley's final and it was too bad that he died so suddenly because this was his best film performance ever. It showed how he dominates the film by his brand of physical, in your face comedy. The script was hokey at best, meaning it wasn't trying to be the best movie; if it did that task failed.

Based upon the story of Lewis and Clark's expedition, Chris Farley and Matthew Perry embark on a journey to do the same as Lewis and Clark did, but beat him to it. Perry and Farley play Edwards and Hunt a fumbling pair of wannabe explorers that want to make a profitable discovery.

"Almost Heroes" is a fun movie to watch and a pure delight for everyone wanting stressless viewing.

Extreme Ops (2002)

Extremely boring

If action sequences were given more weight than a script, then "Extreme Ops" would take the grand prize; however, each are given the same amount and one cannot survive without the other. It seemed the plot was hidden underneath the snow and scattered along the only redeeming quality: the setting.

Set in the Austrian Alps, "Extreme Ops" follows a film crew who must capture footage of three extreme sports enthusiasts being chased by an avalanche for a television commercial. During some late-night fun, inadvertent footage captures a secret rendezvous between a Serbian war criminal and his girlfriend on a remote mountain hideaway. This leads to a game of cat and mouse as the extremists attempt to escape with their lives.

On the surface, it may seem slightly interesting and filled with excitement, but "Extreme Ops" is a 93-minute film that takes half of that time to establish itself and failed to convince me of becoming anything other than a group of actors and their director having some fun in the snow.

Only two redeeming qualities survived "Extreme Ops": the setting and action scenes. With chase scenes through the scenic mountain backdrop involving skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, white water rafting, helicopters, motorcycles, and base-jumping, it's easy to overlook the faults.

Down to Earth (2001)

Chris Rock comes into his own

With a combination of charm, wit, humor and romance; "Down To Earth" has ascended to be one of the funniest films I've seen in 2001. This marks the second Chris Rock movie I have seen and I must say I was impressed with his comedic and acting ability because he kept me laughing throughout the film. It is a true pleasure to take a break from the violent action films and watch a light-hearted comedy meant to entertain.

"Down To Earth" is a very exciting film to watch because Chris Rock's comedy is funny and unpredictable. One the coolest parts of this film was Rock's performance because he knew when to turn off the comedy in the more serious scenes.

Furthermore, Rock seemed to fit the part perfectly because his performance looked to pulled off with little effort. This is Chris Rock's breakthrough performance because it proves he is an actor to be reckoned with and not just a one-hit wonder.

The intelligence and creativity of the writing was excellent because it was unique and interesting to see how the script would play out on screen. Another impressive aspect of the movie was the element of the dream Rock's character had about performing at the Apollo. It is a true pleasure and welcomed change to see a legitimate underlying plot that made sense rather than one put in to add extra minutes to the movie.

The supporting cast of King, Addy, Levy and Palminteri play a huge role in the success of "Down To Earth" because each bring their own exciting personas to the screen. All of these actors come from different genres of film, which makes for an interesting mix of characters.

I was extremely impressed with the way each related to one another; furthermore, as with Rock, they seemed to be right at home in their roles because it was pulled off with ease. It is not often that we find a cast who come together from different genres to produce such an exciting and hilarious film.

"Down To Earth" is the best comedy of the year because it combines fresh and original jokes with touching and charming scenes lacking in the other 2001 comedies. Chris Rock is a tremendous comedic talent that knows how to use it to his advantage; furthermore, it is a true pleasure to watch him.

"Down To Earth" made me smile because it is a truly touching film that isn't holding anything back. Chris Rock rules the screen with his comedy and the writing is out of this world. I wish I could have been part of this film.

I can't wait to see Rock's next film because I know he will pull another great comedic performance out of his hat. His comedy, charm and wit made this film worthwhile and deserves all the praise it has received. "Down To Earth" receives a directed verdict of guilty of being one of the funniest films of 2001.

Dracula 2000 (2000)

Sink your teeth into this film

I chose to see "Dracula 2000" because I knew if I didn't watch it I could possibly be missing out on one of the best Dracula films ever made. My decision paid off because it turned out to be one of the most worthwhile Dracula films I've seen.

Originality and believability are two factors "Dracula 2000" was a success in my eyes. These are very important to have to make a film successful. The most enjoyable thing about this film was Dracula because he was portrayed as having emotions rather than rage as previously portrayed; furthermore, with this added quality, I almost felt sorry for Dracula because of the story he told.

I need to give the cast credit because they made it much more enjoyable because they brought attitude and humor. Rising stars were discovered in Justine Waddell, Gerard Butler, Jennifer Esposito and Sean Patrick Thomas; furthermore, veteran Christopher Plummer added credibility to an already stable film that could have survived on its own.

It was a pleasure to sit through this film because I didn't know what to expect next; furthermore, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Who would have thought that "Dracula 2000" would have such an appeal on so many levels. I hope there would be more Dracula films made like this because people will take to it more than the same old thing over and over again. My advice to everyone is to see this film.

Erin Brockovich (2000)

One of Julia's best performances

"Erin Brockovich"is one of the smartest movies I have seen in a long time.In the tradition of "A Civil Action,"Erin Brockovich" delves into the case of a town inflicted with various diseases due to toxons coming from a PG & E plant.

Julia Roberts plays the title role who snares the case after getting hired as a file clerk to an attorney, Ed, played by Albert Finney. Rounding out the cast is Aaron Eckhart, who portrays George, Erin's supportive boyfriend.

"Erin Brockovich" embodies what directors should look for in making a good movie because this is one smart movie. "Erin Brockovich" has solidified Julia Roberts as a true star because her performance as Erin is one that only Julia could pull off. Julia brings her feisty attitude to a role that brought spunk to the character.

"Erin Brockovich" matched the feistiness and fiery attitude of Julia Roberts with the brilliant dialogue and direction of Steven Soderbergh, plot as well as perfect casting to make an outstanding and heart-warming film.

"Erin Brockovich" is a plain and simple feel good movie that touched me in ways that I cant even describe. After watching "Erin Brockovich," I wish I could do the same thing for others. I praise the real Erin Brockovich for what she has done for the town of Hinkley and what she and Ed continue to do, which is fight the good fight. Furthermore, the portrayals by Roberts and Finney did well in conveying the true effect Erin and Ed had in the town.

I would recommend everyone watch this film.

Dungeons & Dragons (2000)

Don't get caught in this dungeon

"Dungeons & Dragons" is so terrible, I can't help myself from laughing at people who say they liked this film.

This is one of the worst mistakes ever made in Hollywood. I had an inkling of what the end result of this film would be; however, I wanted to give it a chance.

The first problem is the lack of plot to accompany the numerous action sequences. It seems to me that the action was supposed to be the main draw. I can only assume the writer forgot that there are people who actually like to see a film with BOTH action and story when they see a film. In addition, the cause of fighting the villain is so stupid; who cares.

The second problem I see is casting. Combine an unestablished actor with little film experience and zero talent with a very talented veteran, Jeremy Irons and you have a disaster for a film called "Dungeons & Dragons."

"Dungeons & Dragons" should have stayed locked in a dungeon in a far off place so nobody has to go the suffering I did when I saw this film. If you see this film, good luck.

Drowning Mona (2000)

Avoid this film at all costs

I couldn't believe great talent like Jamie Lee Curtis, and Danny DeVito would star in "Drowning Mona," a dull, one dimensional film with poor comedy. In a cast that includes Casey Affleck, Neve Campbell, William Fichtner, and Bette Midler; I expected to see a much better film than I did.

However, "Drowning Mona" could not stay above water even if a rescue had been asked for. The ending was so cliché that even I could think of a better one.

This is one film I could have done without. At least it gave me the opportunity to tell others to stay away from "Drowning Mona."

Dudley Do-Right (1999)

Avoid this film

Brendan Fraser wasted his time and talent and Sarah Jessica Parker made the biggest movie mistake in choosing to star in "Dudley Do-Right."

"Dudley Do-Right" is the type of movie everyone hopes will be a success. Unfortunately, the writing did not measure up to the level of talent that signed on to the movie. It is always fun to watch comedic spoofs if they are written well and are logical. However, this film broke both these rules.

It was clear that there was no plot or humor in "Dudley Do-Right." The only thing that made it bearable was the narrator because he is the only character who kept my interest.

SKIP this movie because you will be sorely disappointed if you don't

End of Days (1999)

very enjoyable

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gabriel Byrne are one of the best combination of actors put together in the same movie together following previous film duos such as Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Byrne is such a fine actor in this role, he reminded me a lot of Al Pacino's cunning and convincing role as the devil in "The Devil's Advocate." I was impressed with the way that Byrne carried himself throughout the film.

"There must be a good villain to have a better good guy." This cliché is only half accurate because while Arnold is the best at what he does, Byrne upstages him a lot in this film.

Adding to this underrated and spectacular film are the performances of Robin Tunney, Kevin Pollak and Rod Steiger along with unbelievable special effects.

The special effects were spectacular and eye opening at wonderful and convincing the sequences were. In addition, the plot equaled the effects in that they went together perfectly and very convincing all the way around.

Fight Club (1999)

Awful

I thought I had already seen the worst movie of 1999 but after watching "Fight Club," this was wrong as "Fight Club" took the honor. There was no point to this film and it was the waste of talent for two otherwise excellent actors.

There is not much to say about "Fight Club" because there was nothing worthwhile to remember. After the first ten minutes of this film, I realized I was watching a film that is best described by the condition of the house the two lead characters were living in old, delapidated, rundown and an ugly home. Brad Pitt made a wrong career move selecting "Fight Club" and Edward Norton just wasn't thinking as he made his decision.

With a story that made no sense, action that was non-existent and performances that were poor; "Fight Club" was nothing more than a time and space filler for the studios.

Edtv (1999)

A huge failure

For all the talent attached to this project, the end result of "EdTV" is one that will disappoint all viewers.

Despite what others say about "EdTV," I believe it to be a rip off of "The Truman Show" because it is basically contains the same premise.

Matthew McConaughy, Jenna Elfman, Ellen DeGeneres and Woody Harrelson star as "EdTV" just misses the target. Howard does his best to show the life of a celebrity as well as all the trials and tribulations that follow, but the writing just isn't there to support the director.

The performances provided by McConaughey, Elfman and Harrelson were so boring that I had to struggle to stay attentive toward the movie. Furthermore, I will recommend that everyone watch "The Truman Show."

Fargo (1996)

Bury this film in the snow where it belongs

I expected to see Oscar caliber performances when I saw this film but I was wrong. I did see a film that didn't really go anywhere.

There was no suspense or nobody to feel sorry for. Having said this, I must say there were isolated performances I liked from Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormarnd.

McDormand's performance as a pregnant sheriff was the only positive of the film. I have to give credit to the Coen Brothers for casting McDormand in this role. As great as McDormand was in her role, she was unable to save "Fargo" from disaster.

The plot of "Fargo" seemed to go in circles without any clear explanation of what is going on in the film. When something worthwhile happened it seemed to end up at a dead end point in the film. The ending of the film was a little off-kilter as it seemed to be forced.

With the talented cast and academy awards "Fargo" received, it really should have been better. I can't believe the number of people who thought "Fargo" was one of the best movies ever made was so high. If it were up to me; I would tell everyone to restrain themselves from renting this awful movie.

Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat (2002)

very funny and enjoyable

"Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat" caught me by surprise because I don't usually find myself enjoying this genre. "Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat" is funny, engaging, insightful and crude; "Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat" contains all of these and I can finally say I have seen Martin Lawrence at his best.
