When I first saw the trailer for Fist Fight, I remember turning to my friend and shaking my head, puzzled by it. The concept seemed like that of a Nickelodeon made for TV movie, except for adults. I hadn't planned on seeing the movie in theaters, but I had a few hours to kill this weekend, so I decided to catch a matinée of it. I went in with an open mind, expecting something stupid, but entertaining. Unfortunately, Fist Fight is A LOT of stupid and not very entertaining.
Fist Fight has a very simple premise. The film takes place on the last day of school before summer vacation, and Charlie Day and Ice Cube play teachers. Without getting into too much detail, Andy (Charlie Day's character) gets Strickland (Ice Cube's character) fired from his position. Because of this, Strickland challenges Andy to a fight. Then the rest of the movie pretty much consists of Andy trying to get out of fighting Strickland, using whatever tactics he can.
From the first minute of the movie, I knew that Fist Fight was not going to be grounded to reality at all. Now, I don't mind suspending disbelief to enjoy a movie, but Fist Fight requires you to suspend your disbelief to such a low level that I had trouble bringing myself to. Basically, this movie was the most unrealistic thing I've seen so far this year (and I saw The Great Wall).
Most of the humor in the movie is rather juvenile and raunchy for no reason. Pretty much none of it is clever or slick and instead it applies to the lowest common denominator. As for our main characters, Charlie Day plays exaggerated Charlie Day, screaming most of his lines really fast in a high pitched voice. In addition, Ice Cube plays exaggerated Ice Cube and is tough and uncompromising. I usually enjoy both actors, but because of how overemphasized both of their performances were, there wasn't a whole lot of enjoyment to be had in either of them.
In the end, I can count the times I laughed during Fist Fight on one hand. At the end of the film, as the credits rolled, I walked out of the theater thinking "that had to have been more than two hours long." However, I was very surprised to see that the movie was only 91 minutes long. Fist Fight gets a 4/10 from me. While it is watchable, Fist Fight is just a big mess without any class or enjoyment to be had, and you're probably best off passing on the movie.
