Il Mare (2000)

Good, but not great.
23 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Unlike a past message someone wrote about how he didn't like the ending, and it would had been better if Sung-hyun died would had been a mistake. It would had made the prev 100 mins seem pointless. There wouldn't be a point for this celestial matchmaking if the main character just died at the end.

I understood the ending with Han Sung-hyun getting the letter in time, with instead of meeting Kim Eun-ju at the beach as planned, he decided to catch her as she was moving out which is the reason why she didn't remember him. Even though it would had been more rational if he just waited, b/c now he will come across as a crazy person. Plus it would look more romantic if they met on the beach where they intended.

The part I didn't like (BTW major MAJOR SPOILER) is that if all this Twilight Zone stuff didn't come into play, Sung-hyun would had lived. The movie made fate seem like a deranged meddler by causing the rift in time to kill Sung-hyun only to have Eun-ju prevent it so she could realize that she was in love with him. I believe the screenwriter thought closed-mindly about that when he could had thought more outside the box. It would had caused more intensity and drama if Sung-hyun died in an accident which had nothing to do with Eun-ju and she suddenly remembers the tragedy back in 1998 and warns him.

Damn, this movie was great until the end.

Warning: Spoilers
I had such a great time watching the first 90 minutes of this 100 minute movie. The acting was as perfect as its premise, but that ending was so rushed. With Philip not angry with Susan for deceiving him is very unrealistic. It would had made more sense if he found out about her age at the party by his fiancée telling him. Also, they shouldn't had gotten married, he barely knows her and she did deceive him. It would had been best if it was implied that eventually they would get married, but I guess I just watched this film through 21st century eyes. Lastly, It would had made sense making Lucy Philip's sister instead his fiancée's so after he and Susan gets married, they would be sister's in-laws. All in all, I rate this movie a 7 out of 10, because the movie was flawless until the end.

I didn't like it.
31 January 2005
The characters were more than one dimensional and there was barely any character development. Gerard Butler can't sing and his face wasn't that bad. It just looks like he had eczema on a 1/3 of his face. Not enough to banish himself to the bellows of the opera house. Also, for someone who hated his face, why does he have so many full length mirrors, plus the Labyrinth was extremely well lighted; "All I ask of you" lighting was way darker than that. With the character of Raoul, oh geez where do I start; wimp, wimp, wimp, wimp, waste of space wimp. He had no purpose what-so-ever. If Andrew Lloyd Webber took out the "All I ask of you song," the love scenes, and replace his character with Meg, but have a Frodo and Sam relationship between the two, the play would had been better. I like Jennifer Ellison, and next to Emmy Rossum, they were the only two good things in the movie.

The sword fight lasted way to long and was unnecessary, and "Masquerade" was such a disappointment. Who choreographed it, Madonna and Paula Abdul; however the scenery was great. I won't be surprised if the movie wins an Oscar for art design.

I understand why other people like the film, because it is an extremely faithful adaptation of the musical, but I was watching it for the acting and characters, and it just wasn't good.

Too bad that such good actors had been wasted in this piece of crap
6 December 2004
It was one major pus-filled cliché. Indiana Jones, Hellboy, Men In Black, Lara Croft Tomb Raider (video game and movie) The Medalion, Monk, Witchblade, Kill Bill (with the music that played when the two girls started fighting,) Lord of the Rings, and countless of other films were constantly being ripped off by this piece of crap. It was beyond a waste of time. Also, if they were going to make a film based around facts and place them into fictional environments, get them right. Why is there snow on top of the mountains in Brazil and Mayans were never in South America; it was the Incas that inhabited that area. The Mayans inhabited Central America and southern Mexico
