The Ice Storm (1997)
Ice Storm - Literally
OK. I'll admit it. I went to see this movie because I saw the ad in the LA Times that showed Sigourney Weaver holding a whip. I was curious, and a little bit excited.
I must recommend that you see this movie alone, or with someone who doesn't talk during movies. This is a movie that needs to be experienced as a whole, from beginning to end. And I'm NOT a movie snob, I'm just a regular guy that likes to watch a movie and let it influence my emotions without commentary from my neighbor. : - ) If you're like me, then you'll leave the theater thinking that you missed something (completely satisfied, but wondering). You'll think there's something that happened under the current, in the shadows, without your knowledge.
Did everything in the movie happen twice? Was every relationship a reflection of another relationship? What was the message of this movie? I don't know. I've got the movie on DVD, and I've watched it about 20 times, and I still can't tell what I missed......(but I'm sure there was something). And if I figure it out, I'll die a happy man.
Lewis Black: Black on Broadway (2004)
Hello My Gentle Snowflakes
Do you look at the nutritional content label on a bottle of plain water and expect to see anything but zeros? If yes, then Lewis Black isn't for you. If no, then you will find a soul-mate in Lewis Black.
His humor is based on every-day observations, and pointing out the head-shaking, leg-twitching, convulsion enabling wrongness of those observations.
But unlike some comedians, he doesn't yell at you, he yell's with you. He's just as flabbergasted as you are, but makes you laugh about it, instead of cry.
Make sure you watch until the final credits. It's rare that a performer comes back on stage for a bow, and you actually feel that he is grateful that you listened.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Are You Lost?
Sometimes you need to be taken completely out of your element to discover that you're completely lost. Do you ever wonder why your vacations turn into a soap opera full of drama? It's because when on vacation, you discover what you're REALLY trying to get away from, and what you REALLY want to return to.
If you don't jump out of bed each morning with a desire to live life to the fullest, then you need to watch this movie.
Similar (in message if not content) to American Beauty......look closer.
(P.S. NO! You won't laugh hysterically at Bill Murray in this film, but YES, you will leave the theater wondering "Who will I meet today, and how will they change my life.....even if just for a moment")
