The Counselor (2013)
OK-thoughtful at best
Im not one of these people that will tell you this is like something..or not as good as something..it is what it is..it does have a stellar cast...and its subtle moments... ..what isn't spelled out is the reason...and maybe thats purposeful..in that it doesn't matter what that is..,still it suffers for its subtlety..this could be brilliant if we knew for what and why that red coated miss is tumbled down a dump-side for..but then..maybe the trade is such that it really doesn't matter why...people still end up in the dump...low or high..nonetheless,,the film hits something..and it seems as though the point is to be non specific..it just hurts..someone..along the horrendous line...someone makes money somewhere...and the moral are helpless...its a hard film to enjoy..but i guess in some strange way i did enjoy it..its nowhere in the league of a country for old men..but its very close to the sentiment...
Eagle's Wing (1979)
Beautiful plot and performances
Lets face it, there's nothing video clip slick about this movie, its 1979,but.what stands above all else is the plot - and a couple of exemplary performances, and some lovely pictures-and despite numerous stories that become one in this film-this is ultimately a tale about obsession with the horse. In this case heroism, riches, dignity and respect are all sacrificed for a white fine limbed high tailed arabian ..almost to the point of despair...it has its ugly beautiful moments, and as horrific as it is to get a white guy to play a native American (similar to the cringe we feel when whitey's play a chinaman in some films), something about waterstons acting makes it feel OK, and lets face it-its a ripper of a plot, no matter what era you put it in ..."help me" sheen whimpers..and to all of us similarly obsessed with the horse, we understand...and we support abandoning the girl..lament the loss, and fly across the plains with that white wildness, that we will never see again..to those that know what im talking about..im truly sorry for our loss...one of those rare beautiful films that you watch as a kid and never ever forget
Hable con ella (2002)
not quite as good as you would expect from these reviews..but a promising outline
the review i read of this film that made me want to see it told me it was very beautiful-yet not for everyone- a red rag to a bull ja!..BUT the problem i see with this film is entirely screenplay...we really don't need the big vagina, the dancing isn't good enough to move us, the romanticism with bullfighting is indeed beautiful..but. without slow motion and bullshit-even if you stick a chica in the role its still pretty much an awful and ugly exploitation of an animal no matter how pretty you make it on camera..and the lack of intimacy in the silent cinema that should have 'made the play'-i mean seriously you really had a great idea here-alas@!-we should have been seeing beautiful and crafty silent cinema -we should have been in ALICIA's head...and i can tell you now..the director wasn't in ALICIAS head-he should have forgone the big V and replaced it with more scenes that bonded the lead characters with each other....it could have been a magnificent piece if it wasn't for the absolutely disconnected screenplay...we needed to see why the two male characters bonded so solidly..we wanted to actually see a connection between alicia and her abuser -we wanted to see benevolence despite brutality!...but it wasn't there...and no big vagina could make it appear...this is a sad fail and still a very slight success of a film...i cant dislike it...but i cant absolutely love it...its very overly 'arty' and lacks feeling between the characters that is so very nearly there-because the actors are so goddamn good at their jobs!!!!..its good points are that it is very original and the performances are exemplary..you couldn't ask them for more...shame the director failed..worth a watch?...yes...because there is nothing else like it..but you will leave going...hmmm..not that excited-thanks though..big disappointed sigh for what COULD have been...
Warm Bodies (2013)
Not an award-just a couple of future stars making beautiful from a minor yet quietly original script
you know what..this isn't an academy award winner, but neither is it disappointing..its just rather nice, and quite fun...and when you see the leads...any decent film watcher will tell you this couple are future stars...they are lovely in something so silly yet so rather sweetly entertaining that i wouldn't dare bother a criticism..i raise a glass to two future stars...two very warm and enjoyable bodies indeed...you don't need the academy or the split up into cinematography, script, plot etc etc etc for this one...just enjoy it and shut up...its like watching future potential academy awards in their infancy...this pair have it...and good luck to them...
Suspiria (1977)
Dreadful Dull Boring Cult film for morons
1 point for the interesting set. This is for old tossers-and I have nothing against older films- Rosemary's baby still holds up far better and it was made in 1968! Dreadful acting, the goodies fighting aggressive sheep is scarier than this film, blood that looks like paint, no suspense whatsoever, I watched it because i thought the reasonable score with the number of reviews may have been a good indicator of a classic film.....I was wrong...This is possibly the worst film I have ever seen...even bad taste and braindead were better than this film ...Dont waste your time...If you liked this movie Im afraid your taste sucks and you are either too old or simply haven't watched enough horror and suspense to know that this is an absolute yawn to the serious and prolific watcher...The music is dreadful-distracting, overbearing without any real or necessary effect on the watchers mood and sounds like a joke! Not to mention the poor sound quality even on the original version. I agree with the people who say they are sad they wasted 98 minutes on this rubbish...
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
Interesting, original, and not as bad as some people declare-as long as you're not a pussy!
After reading the reviews and looking at the overall rating (4.6) I was pleasantly surprised with this film-sure-its off the wall-but it surprises me that this interesting little film gets such a bashing. If it was not for the lead actor Dieter Laser-it may well have been dross-however, he is sufficiently cold and sick to have made me really rather enjoy this piece. And the notion that a doctor well practised at separating bodies would have the notion to join some isn't really that ridiculous. I found the girls (like most B grade horror) to be fairly poor actors , and yes-their lack of ability to even attempt a tyre change and then to traverse thick woods instead of walk along a road?-well-that fits with B grade well enough-so i wasn't phased by it, but i found the anxiety and distress of the resulting creature rather moving and realistic, and a wonderful little exercise in horror..sure the Christian family person who loved Titanic and Mission Impossible, who thought 'Precious' and 'The Killer inside me' was sick-and who doesn't like horror is always going to slam this kind of thing-but for the toughnuts who like black stuff-i actually think this is quite well done and satisfying once you get past the initial bore of poor decisions. It has its weaknesses-but overall-for the horror aficionado, for the people who are sick of Hollywood, for the REAL film buffs for whom no genre is too much-id say give it a watch. I enjoyed it. Its not an academy award winner-but its also not one of the dreadfully boring horror flicks that really aren't impactful and are so B grade you can barely remember them a week later. As for the sequel? -even better, possibly brilliant!, not to mention amusing, well if you like black humour -though its really only funny and of interest once you've seen the first. Not for tossers who cant see originality and find any film "disturbing".As far as I am concerned this film is drastically under-rated. And the sequel? well very-very under-rated.
