Tales from the Crypt: Split Second (1991)
In MY top 3
Michelle Johnson proves to be just a bit too irresistible. Her husband, an awesome Brion Jones, is racked with jealousy and hatred for anyone who even breathes near her. Hmm, I wonder if Johnson's real life ex husband, MLB player and a favorite of mine Matt Williams, felt the same way. Oh well, the intrigue and build up in this episode give it enough to fit into my top 3 Tales of Alltime. My other 2 star Joe Pantoliano as a circus freak with 9 lives and Andrew McCarthy loving Mariel Hemingway to death or is it the other way around. This trifecta of Tales is required viewing for Tale aficionados. All three endings are priceless and the acting Top-Rate. Seriously, no one mails in a performance, even the secondary characters. It's sad to see Brion Jones has passed away, his eyes and their evil portrayal is second to none.
Tales from the Crypt: Loved to Death (1991)
crazy screams
The eerie screams that McCarthy belts out are perfect. I assume a synthesizer helped prolong their effect. I couldn't agree more that the landlord was a needful ingredient. Covered in smoke and hidden through the lighting, his persona was great. It was strange to read that the actor who played the landlord was trained and performed professionally as a singer...good for him. McCarthy and Hemingway fit the bill. Their performances carried the show right along. I am a fan of both actors and am happy they came together to put this one through. How hilarious was it when she switched the glasses so he wouldn't get the dirty glass. He dies and she follows up by jumping out the window to follow him for all eternity. Sure, Hemingway must have been annoying after all the sex and the tiredness, but to end up unexpectedly dying and her follow would make me scream too. Her face was banged up in the afterlife and her clinging would continue, but the rest of her still was great, McCarthy at least had something for the rest of eternity.
Tales from the Crypt: Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone (1989)
awesome episode
Joeypants and robert wuhl are cast beautifully. One of my favorite Tales, along with the Logsmith who uses an ax instead of the machine powered saw. The episode is pure genius. What an idea to use 9 lives from a cats brain. Loved the life he loses when he kills his partner in the headon crash into the wall. He didn't see his girlfriend killing him though, she had a good idea. A classic! there also was an episode in which a traveling salesman has to "make love" to an undesirable girl in order to save his life and barely rises to the occasion. He gets killed anyway...very creepy episode. Hopefully, Ill see more comments for this great series, I know you old HBO watchers are out there who remember the crypt keepers screeching laugh.
F/X (1986)
crafty movie
A great cast and plot twists keep F/X moving brilliantly along. Though Bryan Brown is the star and deserves a hell of a lot of credit, his supporting cast makes the most of their small time on screen. Just departed Mason Adams, Brian Dennehy perfectly cast, Joe grifasi, Diane Venora, the guy from Sesame Street. We've all seen them before and they prove their worth here. A classic 80s movie that is enjoyable every time I see it. Not many movies shoot on location in New York City anymore. The summer locale gives the movie a familiar feel. Also, was the final scene filmed overseas and if so, why the expenditure for such a small scene? I'm not complaining, maybe the production crew and cast went on vacation to celebrate.
