Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Beef (2010)
Pathetic Drivel
I really like this series, and we've enjoyed binge-watching it over the last year or more. But this episode is awful. It's especially cartoonish during the suspect interviews - I've rarely seen this good show's resources used so poorly.
The writers seem to completely lose perspective when they attempt to make political points. It's bewildering to see a show that usually uses subtlety to tell some very complex stories go so overboard and melodramatic that it's laughable.
This series is at its best when it shows compassion for victims who are hurting in really terrible circumstances. All the show's lead characters have had wonderful moments interacting with guest star victims who are suffering, exhibiting a deep humanity and warmth. This was not that show.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Anchor (2009)
Heavy-Handed Garbage
The writers were so eager to paint conservative commentators as crazy that they abandoned their job to tell a believable story. It wasn't enough to have nut-job fans demonstrating in the courtroom without being removed, and the "media conservative" be melodramatically wild-eyed and threatening on the witness stand. But nearly every character has to add their own commentary before it's over, at the expense of having realistic dialog, and
having ADA Cabot arguing with the witness counter to the legal position of her own case is unforgivably stupid.
And the bewildering murder that ends the episode - was that heavy-handed enough?
Star Trek: Requiem for Methuselah (1969)
Kirk - Out Of Control
The android girl may be a virginal teenager, but Captain Kirk is the real adolescent here. Out of all the women Kirk threw himself at throughout the series, this is the most cringe-worthy. With little provocation and no chemistry, and while everyone else is in the room watching, he is all over this unresponsive girl and then goes to pieces when he can't have her.
I love the old series and have been enjoying rewatching them in production order again, but the threats and lack of control in this episode are pathetic. Just nauseating.
Enterprise: Chosen Realm (2004)
Another TOS Recycle
It was interesting to see this a couple days after watching the TOS episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and realize mid-episode that it was a rewrite of that older treatment I had just watched. And although a few things were changed along the way, the ending is virtually identical.
Others have mentioned that this episode shows the Enterprise crew to be exceptionally slow learners regarding ship security, and I agree it's getting annoying. Some internal defense strategies definitely need to be established.
