Most Underrated Film of All-Time
11 May 2006
After a triumphant run on Broadway, the film adaptation of "Lost In Yonkers" was completely snubbed at all of the major film awards ceremonies. Neil Simon's classic is brilliantly written and the direction is so simple, yet very subtle. But what really makes the film work is the performances. Dreyfuss is no Kevin Spacey, but does what he can with the role. The two boys are played expertly by their respective actors. Irene Worth reprises her Tony-award winning role and I thank god for that. She is spectacular as the stern grandmother.

But the stand-out here is Mercedes Ruehl. The woman delivers one of the most underrated performances in film history as Aunt Bella. She won a Tony, why no Oscar? Seriously, she is *that* good. Ruehl delivers such a magnificent performance as the slightly disturbed woman. She really should have two Oscars on her mantle.

GRADE: A ACTING: A WRITING: A+ DIRECTING: B MVP: RUEHL

Rent (2005)
10/10
Really Great Film.
10 December 2005
Rent Adam Pascal, Rosario Dawson, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Tracie Thoms, Taye Diggs, and Anthony Rapp

Chris Columbus

PG-13

I've never seen the stage version of "Rent", and I don't have to. The movie version is enough to please me. In short, I loved it. I liked the performances, although some were flawed, I liked the songs, all though some were dragged out, and I liked the plain and simple direction.

In the song and singing department, I really liked almost all of them. My favorites would have to be "Take Me Or Leave Me", "Light My Candle", "Out Tonight", "Today 4 U", and "Tango: Maureen". All very well sung by whoever was singing them.

As for singers—everyone was pretty good, yet there were stand-outs. First of all, I'm going to say that Idina Menzel has got some lungs. She completely belts "Take Me Or Leave Me", and is quite talented in "La Via Boheme". Also a standout is Rosario Dawson—who gives us two powerhouse performances. The first is the sexy "Light My Candle" and the next is the fun and hip "Out Tonight". Wilson Jermaine Heredia is a treat, too…"Today 4 U" works because of him, as it should. Tracie Thoms keeps up with the old school crowd, and works well in "Tango: Maureen".

In the acting department, everyone does a decent job. Stand-outs are Rosario Dawson, Anthony Rapp, and Idina Menzel. Dawson is an absolute delight as Mimi Marquez, a truly complex character to play. Anthony Rapp is good as Mark, too. I don't know why he didn't get a Tony nod—maybe his perfy was different then? Probably. Idina Menzel is really good as Maureen, who is vain and self centered. Still, gotta love her.

In the direction department, not much to brag about. I did like the simple form, though. It was very…plain. Most definitely the worst part of the movie, yet it's not too bad.

GRADE: A- (The acting and the singing rocked, the direction—not so much) STARS: 3 And A Half Out Of 4.

STAND-OUTS: Rosario Dawson, Idina Menzel, and Anthony Rapp BEST SONGS: "Take Me Or Leave Me", "Light My Candle", "Out Tonight".

Almost Grown: Pilot (1988)
Season 1, Episode 1

The Most Brilliant Failure In Television History, Hands Down.
31 August 2005
I was lucky enough to have actually caught this CBS pilot. It, no exaggeration, was the definition of television at it's best. The two leads were incredibly appealing, while the supporting actors were just as brilliant. Top acting honors go to Marcia Cross, Tim Daly, and Eve Gordon-they carried the whole series. The romance, comedy, and drama all blended together perfectly. An incredible television show! The show just had this ripe and juicy richness to it. You will definitely not be disappointed if you watch it! Tim Daly, Eve Gordon, Marcia Cross, Rita Taggart, And Michael Alldredge star. A Must See For Someone Who Loves Brilliant Television.

Oustanding....The Best Film Of The Year!
11 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
"What's Cooking?" is one of the most overlooked films in history! The powerhouse actors portraying gentle characters were magnificent. The way the stories perfectly combined shocked me, and the movie kept me very intrigued and put a smile on my face all way through. In LA, on Thanksgiving day, four multi-cultural families deal with their dysfunctional relatives.

In the Avila family, a Hispanic-American clan, Elizabeth's (Mercedes Ruehl) son, Anthony (Douglas Spain), invites his estranged father Javier (Victor Rivers) to dinner. Meanwhile, her daughter Gina (Isidra Vega) has invited her boyfriend Jimmy (Will Yun Lee), who is Chinese.

In the Nguyen family, an Asian-American clan, Trinh (Joan Chen) is always in a battle with her daughter Jenny (Kristy Wu), who has found a gun under the bed of her brother's (Brennan Louie) bed.

In the Williams family, an African-American clan, Audrey's (Alfre Woodard) **SPOILER** husband Ronald (Dennis Haysbert) was having an affair at work. Meanwhile, their estranged son Michael (Eric George) has quit college and come home for Thanksgiving, to celebrate with Grandma Williams (Ann Weldon) and the Moore family (Shareen Mitchell, Gregory Itzin, Mariam Parris).

In the Seelig family, a Jewish-American clan, Rachel's (Kyra Sedgwick) parents (Lainie Kazan, Maury Chaykin) can't deal with her being a lesbian with Carla (Julianna Margulies), and must hide the secret from Aunt Bea and Uncle David (Estelle Harris, Ralph Manza).

I must begin by saying all of the principle actors, except Kristy Wu and Julianna Margulies, did an amazing job.

Mercedes Ruehl gave a stunning performance as Elizabeth, a woman who couldn't go back to her cheating husband. Douglas Spain and Isidra Vega did excellent work in their supporting roles, while Will Yun Lee brought smiles to your face all the time.

Joan Chen was magnificently wonderful as a Vietnamese woman who wants to stick to her Asian customs. Kristy Wu is a terrible actress, but her acting doesn't rain on this parade of a movie. Brennan Louie had a truly minor role, so there's not much I can say about him.

Alfre Woodard was so damn amazing that I was about to lose my mind, she was really good. Dennis Haysbert was nothing out of the ordinary, but decent. Eric George had a very minor role also, but he did good. Ann Weldon was very entertaining and I would have loved to see more of her. Gregory Itzin and Mariam Parris had small roles, but Shareen Mitchell, in the small amount of time she was on, was jaw-dropping amazing and a huge scene stealer!

Kyra Sedgwick is a great actress and she really pulls this role off. Lainie Kazan and Maury Chaykin are absolutely flawless—there's no way you can't love them. Julianna Margulies did a horrible job. She was obnoxious, stupid, and one-dimensional. Estelle Harris and Ralph Manza had small roles, but they acted them out hilariously.

I must say the writers of the film handled each family very well, never giving the audience too much of one. Thanksgiving is a difficult time and just because it's Thanksgiving now—not everything is all happy and peachy. The film portrayed that message greatly.

The most intriguing family was the Williams one. It had very well-put together plot lines and it was delightful to watch the actors, because they all did wonderful. They were the sort of 'perfect' family that had it's problems revealed piece by piece.

The next most intriguing family was the Seelig one. Kyra Sedgwick was the glue of it and everyone, except Julianna Margulies like said before, turned in really good performances. The lesbian issue is handled very well and there are some gentle scenes of joy.

The third most intriguing family out of the four was the Avila one. Mercedes Ruehl left a huge impression in her role and so did every single person that had anything to do with the Avila plot. The story-line is interesting, although at times there are senseless scenes.

The least intriguing family is the Nguyen one. It's the least intriguing, but still very intriguing. Joan Chen's performance raises it to a solid 8 on my list and the supporting cast, besides the intolerable Kristy Wu, did great. The stories were a bit dramatized, but it was still good.

ALL IN ALL: "What's Cooking?" is my favorite movie of 2000 and if there's only one movie you can see from that year…make it this one! It's Flawless! 10 Thumbs Up (Out Of 10)

A Magnificent Comedy/Musical
17 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU (YEAR: 1996) (GENRE: Comedy/Musical/Drama) (CAST: Woody Allen, Alan Alda, Edward Norton, Drew Barrymore, Goldie Hawn, Julia Roberts, Natasha Lyonne, Tim Roth, Natalie Portman, Gaby Hoffman, Lukas Haas, Barbara Hollander)

"Everyone Says I Love You" is a magnificent comedy/musical from writer/director Woody Allen. The plot revolves around two intertwining stories.

Joe Berlin (Oscar Winner Woody Allen) can't seem to find love—he picks the wrong women. One day, in Venice, the beautiful Von Sidell (Oscar Winner Julia Roberts) catches Joe's eye and he's immediately attracted to her. Turns out, his daughter DJ (Natasha Lyonne) knows this woman—and everything about her. DJ tells Joe everything Von loves and Von falls madly in love with Joe, as Joe does with Von.

Elsewhere, in New York, when Bob and Steffi Dandridge (Oscar Nominee Alan Alda & Oscar Winner Goldie Hawn) aren't helping Joe—they're running their crazed family.

Eldest daughter Skylar (Drew Barrymore) is going to married to Holden Spence (Oscar Nominee Edward Norton)—**SPOILER** until she falls for ex-convict Charles (Joe Roth).

Lane and Laura (Oscar Nominee Natalie Portman and Gaby Hoffman) are falling for a mysterious guy, and unfortunately, **SPOILER** one of them is left heartbroken.

Their son, Scott (Lukas Haas), is a big time republican and can't help but always express this to his highly liberal democratic family.

The stories go together very well, and the acting is great. Edward Norton and Goldie Hawn, in particular, really are amazing. They don't have scenes together—but they're most definitely the best in the cast.

Woody Allen, Alan Alda, and Natasha Lyonne come in a close second place tie. They're characters are so different and it's very believable that the three are family and close friends willing to help each other out.

Drew Barrymore and Joe Roth could have done better. They were okay, but they really didn't do anything spectacular.

Natalie Portman is a very likable character and a very talented actress. Unfortunately, we hardly see any of Gaby Hoffman in this movie. Rounding out the cast is Lukas Haas, who will really make you crack up.

The acting is amazing from the majority of the cast, the story is a very good one, and the musical numbers are crafted so well.

EK'S EVALUATION: PLOT…10 ACTING…8 WRITING…10 FINAL SAY…9 (OUT OF A POSSIBLE TEN)

Pleasantville (1998)

A Great Film...Joan Allen Shines
26 March 2005
Pleasantville is a fantastic movie with original performances. Reese Witherspoon and Tobey MaGuire lead the all-star cast in a delightful movie. The innocence of the characters and the age they're living in is so fascinating. The characters are very likable, because they're willing to go where they haven't gone before. Joan Allen delivers a performance that had me tearing up. Her portrayal of a lonely housewife was incredible. Their are some genuinely funny moments and some ridiculously sad moments. William H. Macy, Reese Witherspoon, Tobey MaGuire, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, Paul Walker, J.T. Walsh, and Marley Shelton round out the magnificent cast in the 1998 classic, "Pleasantville".

Cut (I) (2000)
Good story, Okay deaths, Molly Ringwald rocks, and everything else sucks.
18 September 2004
Title: Cut

Starring: Molly Ringwald, Jessica Napier, and Sarah Kants.

Rating **1/2 out of *****

Review: Definitely not a jumper. There was one scene with Ruffy where I jumped but besides that nothing. I must say that the plot is quite interesting and cool. The idea of returning to make a faded horror movie is a good one. The deaths were okay but you can tell it was just ketchup and water being splattered on windows!! Molly Ringwald gave a great performance too. Good story, okay deaths, and Molly Ringwald. A good premise slasher flick that had potential, but was ruined by HORRIBLE acting. Sarah Kants, Jessica Napier, Kylie Monlouge, all of them sucked!!!!!!!!!!1 I've personally seen much better--not the worst nor ever gonna be the best!!!!!!!!! On 1-10, it gets about a 5 or 6.

Valentine (2001)
10/10
GOOD MOVIE!
3 August 2004
Valentine was an excellent movie!!! It wasn't like Scream, Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer, or any other modern-day slasher flick. The acting, directing, and writing was fantastic. Denise Richards as Paige Prescott was stunning. Marley Shelton was good as Kate Davies but can't hold a whole movie. Jessica Capshaw gave a great performance as Dorothy Wheeler. David Boreanaz plays the drunken Adam Carr very well. Jessica Cauffiel was one of a my favorite characters as Lily. Katherine Heigl was good as Shelley Fisher too. Blanks (Jamie) did an excellent job directing. The deaths were good as they kept the not-too-gruesome title. The valentines were creative, and the house they filmed at was beautiful. They give you just enough information to not COMPLETELY surprise you at the end. It went by too fast though! It seemed very short. The script was just great. The movie did well with supporting characters (Campbell, Max, Gary) too. I'd give Valentine an astonishing 10 out of 10. GOOD MOVIE!

Fantastic
18 July 2004
Halloween is a FANTASTIC movie. I am 10 years old and i saw it wen i was 8 it scared the heck out of me and it still does. Halloween had an all star cast of Donald P. and Jamie Lee Curtis. This movie cared more about scaring you then disgusting u with blood and gore. The sight of that mask makes me want 2 scream! John Carpenter did a beautiful job on the film. I did like Halloween 2 and H20 but this was INCREDIBLY ENTERTAINING! The way that the acting in this movie was acted, was stunning. Michael Myers tipping his head,(SCARY)! The way Jamie Lee was terrified made it superb and Donald P. should have won an Oscar! 4 STARS OUT OF 4
