Enola Holmes (2020)
Cute young adult film
This is made for young adults. Young females primarily. If you keep that in mind it's not too bad, just sort of cozy. There is no real mystery to be solved, nothing too deep to dwell over. Enola is someone who I can see my nieces loving. It was much longer than it needed to be, but not gruelingly so.
The Watch (2020)
Not Discworld, but not horrible
Edit: Having watched more of it, I take back the not bad. Even judged separately from the source material it doesn't quite hit the mark
Listen, I was uber excited about this when it was first announced, but knew that Pratchett is hard to translate to screen. Seems like the creators decided it was so hard to adapt that they would just do their own thing.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, the fact that it's so far removed from its source material makes it possible to separate the show from the books entirely and view it as something new and, honestly, that something new isn't all that bad.
The effects are better than I was expecting, the acting is good, it's quirky and stylized. Some of the dialogue is rubbish and difficult to hear, but that seems to be the in thing with shows these days.
Yes, there are some things I have a hard time getting past (Lady Ramkin) but enjoyed watching some beloved characters come to life in this bizarre multiverse version of Ankh-Morpork.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Kaufman at his Kaufmaniest
I haven't read the book, but the plot isn't too hard to follow. Keep in mind that this is Charlie Kaufman, so it's going to be beautifully surreal. Not entirely sure why it's listed as a thriller though. Existential dread? Sure. Maybe that can be a new sub-category.
Z (2019)
Oof don't waste your time
Story has been done before and better. There really isn't anything redeeming about this one. Awful characters, dialogue, and acting. A few cheap jump scares and absolutely zero internal logic.
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
So...The Last of Us
This movie is so similar to TLoU I'm surprised no one was sued. That being said it's not bad. Suffers from some pacing issues and stilted dialogue but cinematography is great and the main kid is adorable.
Pretty formulaic story so don't expect to be surprised by anything.
Knives Out (2019)
Politically Divisive Apparently
Seems the negative reviews on here fall into three categories: It was boring, It wasn't a whodunnit, and white tears.
I can agree with the first two..
The film is longer than it needs to be and could have been cut down to an hour and a half without losing much. It also isn't really a whodunnit so don't go into it with that mindset.
But if you're still interested, it has beautiful cinematography, quirky characters, and a good dose of tongue in cheek humor.
Troop Zero (2019)
Let's hear it for the underdogs
This isn't a new story. It isn't going to blow you away with amazing special effects and historically accurate costumes. It's not going to boggle your mind with complexity.
Instead it will spread a message of acceptance, perseverance, empathy, and bravery to a new generation of underdogs and misfits. This isn't a new story, but it's an important one and Troop Zero delivers it with the quirkiness and love it deserves.
