House of the Dead 2 (2005)
Lazy Director
I can't get over how lazy the director is with this movie. Instead of setting up scenes in a creative way he relies on boring old zombie clichés.
Where the two unarmed leads have to get down the college steps into the van he surrounds them with zombies yet neither of the leads is bitten. He can't be bothered to direct a decent fight scene so we see the leads shove their way down the steps.
Sometimes the zombies limp about and at others they run like the wind. This is really convenient for the director because he can set up anything he likes without bothering with continuity in the behaviour of the zombies.
With careful planning and a lot more inspiration this movie could have been so much better.

Social Commentary
This film is a mini-classic. It addresses the lives of the ordinary people who have to struggle to make a living. It shows how enlisted people are really no better off than the rest of us when is comes to coping with bureaucracy and officialdom. Ignore the extreme prejudice in the comment from the Oklahoma poster. The acting is excellent and the characters never descend in to the sentimental clichés that right wing critics accuse social commentary of. It's a shame that the gap between the rich and poor has grown since this film was made. A remake of this film would be timely but probably could not catch the moment like the original does.

Missing the point
Incredible how a few here have picked holes in this movies plot. Totally missing the point of MM. It's like complaining that Lawrence Olivier isn't really German. It's a make believe movie not a factual documentary. As for using familiar plot devices, well if that's not stating the obvious I don't know what is. Tell me one movie that doesn't rehash plot devices. This has been going on since before the Greeks and Romans. It's not the way you say it, it's what you say that counts. Schlesinger is a master of movie making and story telling because he tells the story in an artful manner. That's what's missing with many modern directors - the art of telling a story through film.
