Reviews
Our Girl (2013)
The EndEnder visits Afghanistan!
I don't often write reviews as I'm usually too busy watching.
However, when I came across this mini-series, I saw the rating and thought I'd give it a go. Also, being a BBC production, I know they usually have quality TV. Wow, that couldn't have been further from the truth.
It is one of the lamest shows I've watched in years, and given I've watched over 16,000 movies/TV shows, that's saying a lot. I can't imagine a single British soldier watching this and not cringing at the absurdity of it all.
It's clear straight away the director doesn't know it he wants a comedy, drama or war story. Either way, it is all over the place. The action is deplorable along with the cheap camera work; the ridiculous dialogue makes you wince in pain, and the actors, well, they just cannot act!! Though I've never watched it, my suggestion to Lacey Dawes (Molly), would be, stick to trying to reach that 1000th episode on EastEnders!
I was only 5 minutes in when I knew this was a disaster, but I have a rule to finish everything I watch. So sadly for me, I'll never get that time back, but I CAN save you yours! At the end it stated 'to be continued,' I seriously hope that's not true. The best thing they can do for us and this series, is throw a grenade on it!! 1/10 - I gave it a point for finally coming to an end!!
The Insatiable Moon (2010)
God, I Loved this Movie!!
I often go into a lot of detail when reviewing a movie, especially if I thoroughly enjoyed it, as was the case with this one.
However, quite frankly, this movie must be seen to be believed and felt and nothing I write can or would do it justice.
I do not wish to give anything away other than, All the characters portrayed are based on real people within a community. The story however, is universal. I felt every emotion watching this movie and it had me thinking what more can we do. Perhaps a good start for all of us would be, being a little understanding and forgiving to those less fortunate than ourselves wherever possible. Oh and as 'Arthur' would want; Believe!!
For a country that has more sheep than people, by god, can they crack out one hell of a movie!!
Don't miss 'The Insatiable Moon!' - 10/10
Away We Go (2009)
Away they go to find their Utopia!
For all who have family; want family; are a family and anyone trying to find their own personal utopia; this movie is for you!
A refreshing and unique take on people, life, love, and what makes us... US!
What an amazing array of captivating characters, each with their own array of quirks, be it negative, positive or downright bizarre. I found the fact that each was telling a story within a story, rather engaging and something I hadn't seen done this well for quite some time. It was a gutsy move in my opinion as it opened up so many avenues for the cracks and continuity to show through. However, this didn't happen due to a cleverly written screenplay; Director Sam Mendes who coming off 'Revolutionary Road' has once again proved himself a force to be reckoned with, in now both the comedic and dramatic, romance genres. My pay-off, was seeing this notably young cast successfully bring such depth of life and experience to each of their characters and the corresponding scenario.
Conclusion: What do you get when ... You take out highly paid A-listers, massive CGI and special effects, exorbitant budgets; replace them with a variety of very talented young actors; a few seasoned veterans who never fail to impress (be it on the large or small screen), an original screenplay first-class directing...???
You get... 'Away We Go' for 98 memorable viewing minutes!!
9/10

House M.D.: Help Me (2010)
The Mind Boggles... for now anyway!!
Just watched this seasons final episode and without a doubt was one of the best I've seen in a while so I'd like to commend the writers and team on keeping us glued to our TV's yet again.
I've noticed that many of us fans are not quite sure what to make of the ending and I too have my own opinions of what it was all meant to be or not to be! I think that's what they do so well and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us next season. I do think it was time to change it as I agree with another reviewer when they stated that there are only so many medical procedures/diagnosis's you can come up with in 6 extraordinary seasons. Time to amp it up a bit and move the House character along again.
For conversation sake and the fact I couldn't help but have this thought myself, I'd like to know if anyone had/has the feeling that I did toward the end that perhaps House was considering taking the advice he gave the young woman just before he 'operated' on her?? He seemed to really be taking in his own words, that being that his leg is nothing but pain to him and has changed him etc etc. I wondered whether he would consider, now that he's voiced the fact it's changed him as a person, and have it removed??? Given he said she'd have a prosthetic in no time and be better than he ever will, could this be a possible future storyline? Could he? Could they, the writers? Would he? Would they, the writers? What would people think if he did choose this path, thus obviously us as an audience, then seeing how much of Gregory House is/was the leg and how much is/was him and/or stays with him?! Was just wondering if anyone else thought he may have been thinking or considering this option at any point during that episode? Possibly one of the only TV series I have ever been still completely interested in after 6 seasons!! Well done to everyone who is involved with bringing us 'House!'
Le fils de l'épicier (2007)
Delightfully Appetizing!
I have seen one review here that described this movie as a "dud" and another stating... "All French movies are either about sex or sons reconnecting with their fathers. This one is mostly about the latter." I cannot agree with either. I do not believe all French movies are about either 'sex or sons and their fathers' but I do believe a lot are family orientated.
This is a film based around a hard-working small town family who stumble and struggle through the same ups and downs that most of us have at one point or another with family and children, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity. So please do not miss this movie if you believe it to be just another about fathers/sons and/or sex, as you would be missing out on something very different.
I couldn't say it was a dud in any aspect. Yes, there are flaws, it's not polished perfect but then again, neither are people and life. Because of this I found myself feeling more invested as a parent/spouse/sibling.
The lush scenery and quaint village became characters unto themselves with their lush beauty and vibrant colors. I've not watched a movie for some time where I could say a vehicle became such a huge part of the story. However, I believe it to be the central part of this movie, the proverbial beating heart willing all to see what it sees and proving that sometimes all is not lost and it doesn't take much at all to have things back up and running.
Eric Guirado has done a tremendous job of balancing the story and characters. It felt more of an ensemble piece to me. I read he'd spent time watching actual villagers and successfully as in most cases I wasn't sure who was an extra and who was a paid actor. If you've lived in a small village/town you'll surely appreciate the diversity.
The only negative I have is although I loved the Deleted scenes and Outtakes, I couldn't help but want a longer 'Making Of' after the movie finished.
It is definitely a movie I recommend you see and if you do, I'm sure most will find it as enjoyable as I did.
The Bet (2006)
From Down Under to the Top - Another MUST SEE Australian movie!
I don't want to give any of the movie away and I fear I will do this if I say too much about the movie itself. I've just finished watching this gem of a movie and will re-watch it again tomorrow with my partner.
If you enjoy movies along the lines of 'Wall Street,' 'Boiler Room' and ' Glengarry Glen Ross' and 'The Bank,' then I think you will enjoy 'The Bet' ('The Bet on Bet'). Even if these movies are not usually on your watch list, give 'The Bet' the benefit of the doubt and I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.
For a director's first feature, I take my hat off to Mark Lee and also to the writer/producer who for reasons previously stated in another post did an amazing job getting this movie to our screens. For the most part the cast were excellent but a special mention to Matthew Newton for what I found to be a very real portrayal of someone in his position.
We could nitpick over minor faults and details here and there as we could with every movie, however, considering budget restraints, location, scheduling etc. etc., 'The Bet' stands proudly alongside other great Australian movies of the past 10 years.
If you're interested in checking some out, here are a few I'd highly recommend... 'The Bank,' 'Better Than Sex,' 'Looking for Alibrandi,' 'Lantana,' 'The Oyster Farmer,' 'Little Fish,' 'Japanese Story,' 'Chopper,' 'Romulus, My Father,' 'The Proposition,' 'Shine,' 'Wolf Creek,'.... the list is endless.
I wish more of these stylish and artistic movies from Australia and other parts of the world were promoted a little more worldwide. From what I've been told it had enough trouble being shown in it's country of origin thanks mainly to mainstream cinemas continually refusing to show mature movies with substance instead preferring to pander to one particular and constant demographic. Wake up! You show it, we'll come to see it!!
Finally, well done Australia, another movie your industry should be very proud of and I look forward to spotting more films by this director and writer/producer.
Enjoy!
