Hermana muerte (2023)
A pretty meh watch!!
A pretty meh watch, if I have to be brutally honest. What could have been wrapped up in 45 mins, took 1 hr 31 mins to complete. What was projected as a horror movie was never able to give us the creeps and that is the most disappointing thing to be getting from a horror flick. That's that! The ghost or whatever it was, was so lame.
The ending was also kind of predictable, with no real twists in the end. With its release kind of coinciding with the Nun II and the similarity in the setting, the makers surely did have to do a better job, which they have failed in, in my humble opinion.
However, acting wise, the actors did try to put up a good show and full marks to them for that.
Tokyo Trial (2016)
Absolutely brilliant!
Thanks to Netflix for this brilliant historical drama mini-series, covering a part of the history not many know about. Brilliant acting by all the cast. Kudos to Irrfan Khan for his brilliance, yet again. Really sad, because of the fact that such a gem of an actor and a person is not among us anymore. May his soul rest in peace.
The series can be found a bit stretched at times, but personally I feel that's how it should be, much like enjoying a glass of old wine.
This series has brought to light so many characters we don't know about in our life. For example, Justice Pal, who had represented my country, India and hailed from my city, Kolkata. This has given me a head start to start my bit of research on him. Definitely, for history buffs like me, this should be a must-watch and if you are into World War history, you can't miss this.
Again, thanks to Netflix for bringing this out. Would be waiting for more series like this!
Run (2020)
One of the most watched films on Hulu, for a reason!
One of the best watches on Netflix for me and my wife. The plot kept us guessing and the acting made us marveled. Concise, without much slack, this definitely is a much-watch if you are into thrillers. Deserves to be one of the most watched films on Hulu! Thanks to Netflix, we could also enjoy it. Special mention must also be made of the sound-mixing that was done for this. Awesome!
Cargo (2019)
Amateurish attempt, I'm afraid...
This had all the potential to be the first epic Indian mainstream space movie. Honestly, with cast like that, we were not that wrong to get our expectations high. But in the end what came out was a real messy mixture of Sci-Fi, Space jingo and mythological filth. Poor writing and even poorer screenplay made the movie a total bore. So much so, that at times, I really wondered what they were all up to, what they were really trying to show/prove. If there was an inner meaning at all, it was too hard to get and too irrelevant to the context of the movie, should I say.
Vikrant Massey did justice to his role to an extent and so did Shweta Tripathi, but they were rendered helpless as the movie was hollow and dry really. They did try to project loneliness in space and the essence of companionship there, but I'm afraid it really didn't come that well.
About the special effects, it's OK, given the tight purse the producers reportedly have. The only reason, I am giving this a 2-star is because of their initiative to make a movie on this genre. They really need to make more, as the current Indian generation is really loving such content.
I also liked the design of the spaceship - Pushpak, innovative, I would say. Also, made it really feel nice to take a look at an all-Indian space ship/station (though the name 'India' was never used I think).
In terms of technicalities too, I think I found a lot of flaws, how they designed their spacesuits, how they came on board the space ship directly, without needing to take care of the space suits/themselves of the radiation present in space, how Captain Yuvishka didn't know how the food were brought on to the spaceship, though being a topper. These all were basic and more care were needed on the script, I felt.
Overall, I would give a thumbs up, only for the initiative that the makers had taken for making this movie, but would caution them to get their acts together, if they want to make a good, watchable movie in the future, as this really appeared to be an amateurish attempt.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)
Not cringe-worthy, but not worth your time as well...
Watched this movie on Amazon Prime. To begin with, I have to say that the entire storyline was quite patchy and predictable from the beginning. Loopholes were aplenty. They tried to forcibly immerse humour in every context and frankly, it wasn't working and at times rendering the final output a bit awkward.
Acting was OK! Jitendra did a good job, like he has always been doing from his TVF Days! In fact, I felt Ayushmann overacted on a few occasions, something which we haven't seen that often. Rest of the cast also did their part well.
Music was not a high part of the movie and I give it a pass on that.
I give it a 3/10, instead of a lower rating just because of the fact that they tried to bring this subject up and they attempted to mix humour in with it. Just an attempt it was, which left much to be desired! They had the potential to do it, just that they could not pull it off, at all!
Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019)
Cringe-worthy to say the very least...
Pathetic movie! Pathetic acting! I mean just look at the lead stars in the movie. None of them acted in the movie. It's like they are not getting anywhere with their sheepish acting.
Poor storyline, that too predictable, and you are presenting it to your audience in such a half-cooked manner. And yeah, how on earth did you manage to glorify an extra-marrital affair and make the husband look a ln absolute hero, when he is an absolute jerk and the biggest jackass, imaginable! Totally not done!
Kartik Aryan, boy you need to pull up your socks big time. Your stupid boyish charm and your paparazzi demand won't take you anywhere if you continue flunking in acting like this.
Bhoomi Pednekar, you better stick to the roles you are suited for. Such charm and glitzy glamour is not your cup of tea.
Ananya Panday, you are a kid, so going gentle with you. First learn acting, then think of coming to Bollywood, child. This is not your father's courthouse, for Christ's sake.
Really no takeaway from this waste of a movie. Even the music sucks. The album has more copies, remix or other gibberish than you probably know.
Just a line to conclude. If you happened to have watched this movie, you know very well that you have wasted a good 3 hours of your life and if you haven't yet, you still have that time to save and watch something meaningful. It's upto you, though!
Luka Chuppi (2019)
Good attempt but poor execution...
Whatever was promised in this movie was there in the first half. The hero and the heroine exploring ways how to be in a live-in relationship before marriage and blah blah. All good. With the typical Bollywood clichés it was watchable, but in the second half, it really lost its track. I mean they had completed staying in a live-in, but now the new hunch is that they have to get married (on their own to satisfy their karma), though their families know that they already are. And this is where the plot and the script kinda falls apart. The apparently dominant girlfriend, who had herself suggested initially, has to just get married, that too knowing very well that her father is a big honcho. This is where I couldn't really relate with the plot and the movie.
Acting was OK. Just that Kartik Aryan was resembling (read imitating) Akshay Kumar and Kriti Sanon was doing the same taking inspiration from Alia Bhatt. They could have done it better, adding their individuality in.
Music was OK too. The Coca Cola song has good vibes and energy and also the main romantic song has a good tune to it as well.
Overall Movie Rating - 3/10.
It (2017)
Well, a pretty meh kind of an affair...
After the promotions of this film, expected this one to be a good show. Though to be honest, the villain clown could never convince me enough before watching this film and sadly couldn't do it even after watching it. The plot, I felt was pretty much drawn and lost its way here and there. And the fear quotient was also not that much up-to-the mark. So much so, that I dozed off a couple of times in the middle and also found the appearance of the 'ghost clown' funny at times.
To make things worse, some of the characters were not required in the main plot and the characterization was also a bit below par, I felt. Also, the romance between the characters was uncalled for and it only maligned the main plot. Also, this movie has one of the worst endings that I have seen in a horror flick. You end it with a 'totally-not-required' smooch! Oh God! And this movie was supposed to scare the hell out of us!
All in all, it was an experience with nothing to write home about! I would definitely recommend to give this movie a skip, if you want to invest your precious time in some good horror movies.
