Face/Off (1997)
Fantastic 90's Action
I just rewatched Face/Off last night and I really forgot how good this film is. From great action set pieces to thrilling shootouts. This is the pinnacle of 90's over the top action with a ludicrous plot. Featuring a great cast but none better than Nicolas Cage. He really steals the show and makes this movie what it is. John Woo is well known for his stylistic action films and this one is no different. Yet for me Nicolas Cage makes this film better with his over the top acting. He has become one of my favorite actors in recent years with films such as The Color Out of Space, Willy's Wonderland, Mandy, and Mom & Dad. It's easy to forget how he was a strong name from the 90's starting with one of my original favorites Firebirds.
Anyway, back to Face/Off. In this ridiculous film special agent Archer (Travolta) has been hunting down infamous terrorist Troy (Cage) for years before finally catching him. After an epic showdown Troy is put into a coma only for Archer to learn a bomb has been left somewhere in the city expecting to detonate in the next few days. The only person who might know the whereabouts of the bomb is Troy's brother Pollux Troy (Alessandro Nivola) but he's not talking and demands to see his brother. Only one problem he's in a coma. So what does the FBI decide to do? Well swap Archer's face for Troy's, obvious right? Then Archer is sent to high end maximum security prison to trick the brother into divulging the location of the bomb. Only problem is Troy woke up and took the face of Archer, thus taking over his life. Crazy right? Yep! Now the real Archer bust break out of prison to save his family.
Some things this story fails to realize is how scientifically impossible it'd be to swap someone's face for another to pass them off as the previous person. Not to mention the ability to match their height, personality, mannerisms, speech patterns, and so much more. It'd been a lot easier to just swap the brains. Yet that wouldn't make for a crazy over-the-top 90's action movie.
The Good:
Great cast
Great acting
Great action,
Just Plain Fun!
The Bad:
Terrible story.
M3GAN (2022)
Childs Play for a New Generation
I grew up on Slasher films such as Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Child's Play so it comes as no shock I'd see similarities in M3gan from Child's Play. Now, M3gan is in no way a slasher nor is she possessed by the spirit of a serial killer. Like Terminator and The Matrix she's AI that has evolved and learns how worthless humanity can be, thus chooses to do something about it.
I went into M3gan with no expectations, and it left me with great hope that 2023 is gonna be a great year for films. Normally when a studio has little or no faith in a film it's receives a January or February release but is not the case for me with M3gan. I loved it. From how cool m3gan looked and moved to the great acting from the rest of the cast. Blumhouse has started the year off right with this one. I know it's not a film for everyone but it's still worth a watch for people who wanna see a fun movie. M3gan might come of creepy for some but I think it shows how far we have advanced with technology and how easy it'll be to make life like androids in years to come. Now I know the character was played by an actual little girl with prosthetics and that is awesome. Yet any little search online will reveal that tech is getting really close to making dolls like M3gan a reality.
The Good:
Great visuals with practical effects.
M3gan the doll was awesome.
Great acting & cast.
The Bad:
Medicore story
Children being brats (although a great actress)
Not enough kills
I hope to see more from this franchise. I wanna see M3gan really take off and become the next name of feared horror villains.
The Adventurer (1917)
Best of Chaplin
My favorite film by and starring sir Charlie Chaplin. The comedic timing, characters, and brilliance of Chaplin makes this timeless classic a must watch for cinephiles. Check it out of you appreciate comedy gold.
The Fireman (1916)
Absolute Classic
Love this little short. Charlie is a comedic genius. The greatest comic actor of all time. Great comedic timing, charm and performance by sir Chaplin.
Angelyne (2022)
People Seem to Miss the Point
Angelyne is a story about a young woman who wants to be more than life, more than just a woman but an icon. She vapid, selfish and a more than life Barbie doll living in the plastic life of Hollywood in the 80's. It's not a show for everyone as the show itself is look into the superficial empty world of Hollywood starlets, models and people in general. Angelyne although selfishly empty she does have standards and refuses to see her self short. She wants fame but and will do almost anything to obtain it.
This mocumentary on Hollywood's superficial world is hilarious. Emmy is amazing in the role and it's great seeing her bacjk front and center since she left Shameless. Love Emmy and I am enjoying this show. Molly is also great and for some strange reason IMDB as failed to include her in the credits. Which is truly insulting to Molly.
Costumes, set pieces all have a real 80's feel and one of the few shows to pull it off right.
Heavenly Bodies (1984)
Underrated
Heavenly Bodies is one very underrated film. It's high energy, fun and has great choreography. Cynthia Dale is perfect and absolutely beautiful. I wish they'd remaster it for a 1080p release and edit out all those boom mic slip ups. Definitely a cult classic. If you like films like Flash Dance your sure to love this one. It's a staple for a great 80's flick. Love this film.
