Superman (1978)
Dumbfounded
This review based on the Special Edition.
I've been wanting to watch this movie for years, remembering seeing bits of it during my childhood, but having no real recollection of the movie or how the plot was carried out. My family and I have been on a spree of watching the roller coaster of quality that is the DC Universe movies, having started with 2013's worthwhile Man of Steel a few weeks ago. I figured I'd treat us to watching what I believed to be a historically significant film in 1978's Superman after we finished watching 2023's expectedly disappointing Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2. Having such high hopes going into watching 1978's Superman, I now fail to understand how this movie rates well in any regard.
The three brief redeeming aspects of this film were the fantastic and novel way in which Kryptonian's imprison their criminals (that mirror shard is ingenious), Reeve's portrayal of Clark Kent's attempts to conceal his identity while in Lois' apartment (following the interview and flight), and the gruesome and inescapable death scene of Lois. The rest of what was on display was simply ill-plotted, poorly portrayed, laughable, drawn-out, repetitive, and boring.
I'm honestly finding it hard to believe that I had the fortitude to finish the whole 3 hour film. The only reason I gave this 2 stars, instead of 1, was because our attention was held (ever so feebly) well-enough to finish the film. Upon opening IMDB to rate the film, I was dumbfounded and actually laughed out loud when I saw what the consensus rating was. Seeing that this has a rating of 7.4 on IMDB at the time I'm writing this review, I've lost some of my faith in humanity's credibility to honestly rate movies on the merits of what is actually present in the film. Perhaps nostalgia is causing folks to give a rating based on what they believe they remember about the film, rather than rating something that they have actually recently watched and have a realistic memory of?
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Depressing and exhausting
Yes, the Maleficent character is a pleasure to watch, though the film's plot heavy with torture and genocide carried on throughout overshadow any greatness that she might rise above and shine.
I recall enjoying the first film, though found this one to be depressing and exhausting to watch.
