So, I did not have any expectations for this film, which is good because I'm not disappointed that I didn't enjoy it.
There's just too much wrong with it. I can't tell you what the first act is about. I can't tell you why characters do what they do, or even what they're doing. I can't tell you, on a thematic level, what this film is trying to say.
This film has a ton of gore. So if that's what you're interested in, cool. You'll likely have a good time. But don't expect a simple popcorn flick, because it never truly leans into it. It bounces between serious and silly, never landing on either.
It also looks like it was filmed on a studio lot, so I was never truly immersed in the story. The leads are confusing, too. I still have no idea who the protagonist is.
The third act is ridiculous. Way over the top and completely jumps the shark.
The film itself pays homage to many horror greats including the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Shining. It also borrows heavily from 2018's Halloween, but it's nowhere near as successful.
I love the concept behind this franchise, but I don't think we've truly seen what it's capable of. Worse, this film reminds me of how the slasher genre nearly died off entirely in the late 80s/early 90s.
