Catch a Fire (2006)
Turned off the movie after forty-five minutes
I usually try to be very open-minded about movies. In fact, there are very select few that I come across that I don't try to give a chance. And so I came across this one.
On the back of the DVD case, it promises an action-packed thriller and a great human story. Okay, that sounds fair enough, but as soon as the movie began, I knew I had been gypped.
Now, first of all, I'll admit, I didn't have a problem with the actors. They all did a wonderful and believable job; but it was rather the excruciatingly slow pace of the movie that forced me to turn it off.
My definition of action is that there's either a chase scene, a fight--something to keep interested in what's going to happen. And if there isn't any "promised" action within even the first half an hour of a what is supposed to be a heart-pounding action-packed thriller, I've been lied to.
This movie was pure drama, and that is not the reason why I picked up this DVD.
So, basically, if you enjoy a slow-paced drama, and fairly beautiful scenery, and you've had a nap beforehand, then this is the movie for you. Other than that, if you see it, pass it over. Trust me, you'll be doing yourself a favor.
Crash (2004)
One of the best movies I've seen
I was in awe almost from the moment the movie began. When I saw the list of actors that would be in it, I was just a little unsure of how it would turn out. We all know the game, the bigger the actor, the worse off it is. Well, I must say that was totally the opposite for this movie.
All of the actors were brilliant, and in my honest opinion gave the best performances of their careers, except for Clarence Howard due to the fact that I can't decide which he was better in (this or Hustle and Flow).
Sandra Bullock surprised me probably the most due to the fact that all you ever see her in is comedies, and in this, totally different story. She was your upper-class, all-American white snob, and she perfected it. Her last scene in it was priceless and truly touching and bitterly honest.
Matt Dillon was horrifically magnificent as the racist cop who finally gets the big turn-a-round in the scene involving the actual car crash. The moment between him and Thandie Newton almost moved me to tears. Both gave excellent performances.
But the scene that literally seemed to stop my heart was when the older Persian man shot at the young Latino and his daughter jumps in the way. That was probably the most powerful scene in the whole film, and it was just...more than words can describe.
Ludarcis and Ryan Phillipe both gave stellar performances and the latter was just absolute in one of the film-ending twists. Simply amazing. Simply amazing.
I recommend this film to anyone, for it is a great learning tool, and an honest look into how society truly performs today. I definitely think this movie will give you a different outlook on life, if not change it.
Ten stars, and kudos to Paul Haggis for another wonderful creation.
Walking Tall (2004)
better than what i heard
I saw the reviews for this movie on this sight and I was reluctant about watching it. Well I did, and it wasn't as bad as everyone claimed it was. It was actually very good. The actors knew how to act and the action wasn't that bad. The Rock and Johnny Knoxville were a pretty good team.
This movie starts out with Chris Vaughn coming back to his home town after eight years in the army and finding out everything has changed. After his first day back, he realizes how much things have changed. SPOILERS AHEAD MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!
After his fight at the casino, he is left for dead. After this event and the fact that his nephew almost OD'd on the drugs that the casino's security guards gave to him, he decides to run for sheriff.
The part were The Rock and Johnny Knoxville tear apart the one guy's truck is hilarious. But the part were the Rock's truck and the police station is shot apart are a little far fetched. Especially when the old sheriff and his friends are shooting at them with machine guns is a bit much, but still, overall this movie was pretty good. It's definitely worth renting. I'd give it an eight out of ten.
Godsend (2004)
Promise, but no cigar
This movie could have been good with a better plot line, faster scenes and better acting. I'm sorry for anyone who liked the kid, but he needed a few more acting lessons before coming into this movie. The beginning was a bit strange with the robbers and all, but the writers had to think of something to help along ( besides the death of their kid of course) to want them to move out of the city. I think Robert De Niro wasn't desperate when he did this movie. He probably did see promise with and after the editing, felt stupid for doing in it. I don't know, but what I do know is this movie had too many slow scenes in it. For eg. when Greg Kinnear's character goes back to the city to try to understand the visions and nightmares his son is getting, just too slow and obvious. Now I can say that the one little twist in here was probably easy to figure out, but it was pretty good. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER And the big twist of the movie is: Robert De Niro takes DNA from his insane son that died some twenty or so years before and mixes it with Adam's DNA to basically, which is the real disturbing part, to bring back his psychotic son and Adam as one. NOT A PRETTY PICTURE! ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE HIS PARENTS! END OF SPOILERS This movie had maybe but one or two generally scary parts in it but was just a badly done that could have been good horror flick.
The Attic Expeditions (2001)
Not even worth renting
OK. This movie started out to be okay at first. You got a guy that has been "supposedly" in a coma for the past four years after he killed his fiancé during some weird ritual. He wakes up in a mental hospital with no recollection of what happened let alone where he his or what he did. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!! Dr. Ek (very weird guy and mediocre acting skills) explains to him what he did and then sends him to this house called the House of Love. Here he meets all kinds of strange characters. He starts having nightmares after his first night about going into the attic of this place and finding a locked trunk, but someone is inside. He opens it and they pull him in. Well eventually, he finds out that this is really his old house where he and his fiancé used to live before he killed her. He keeps having the nightmares (thus explaining the name of the movie) and one by one his "Friends" at the house get murdered. MORE SPOILERS SPOILERS CONTINUED!!!! It turns out that all his fellow mental patients are really actors just trying to get him to relive or redo his ritual so Dr.EK can get the special book that he used so he can be the all-powerful doctor EK!! END OF SPOILERS!!!!!!!! Basically this film repeats itself throughout the movie and generally ends up being very stupid and confusing. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!!!!!!! Wanna know the big twist in this one, he was really asleep the whole time!!!!! Not even worth renting.
Dead Above Ground (2002)
Um worse than bad ( minor spoiler)
I like horror movies. Guess what, this wasn't one. Bad acting, bad plot, bad everything. Do not rent this movie. Trust me. Bad make up, bad hair bad bad bad. The only good thing about it was some of its truths about paganism, but other than that. The only reason why I picked it up in the first place was because of its cover. Ten minutes into the movie you could already see where it was going. (MINOR SPOILER)**** The ending,(which I'm surprised I stayed awake to see) was unpredictable and just plain stupid. Sorry, but that's the truth. Again don't get this movie.
