Fear the Walking Dead: Blood in the Streets (2016)
Fear of Black Heterosexual men
It was actually a good episode, IMO.
Still I'm really tired of the difficulty the television media has with strong-- heterosexual-- black men. This seems to be television's last taboo! Strand appeared to be a strong and intelligent wealthy adult male who happened to be black. But having a major male black character on a television show, I was wondering how they were going to deal with potential romantic relationships with women that's usually part of being a major male character on a television show.
Of course, Fear the Walking Dead solved that-- difficult-- problem of having a black male character on the show by simply making Strand a homosexual.
But they've pretty much done the same thing on the Walking Dead. Morgan's wife was already dead before he even met Rick. And they appear to have no intention of ending his single status. In the comics, of course, Morgan actually had a romantic relationship with Michonne. Of course, Michonne is now Rick's current love interest on the show.
In the comics, Tyrese had romantic relationships with both Carol and Michonne. But on the television show, Tyrese, had an extremely brief (practically platonic) romantic relationship on the show until his love interest was quickly killed off of course:-) And, of course, the romantic relationship between Bob and Sasha was barely explored before he was killed off.
Its a shame that the original comic book is a lot more provocative and progressive than the television shows derived from it!
Fear the Walking Dead: Monster (2016)
Embrace the Horror
An exciting and rather haunting start of the new season focusing on the twin horrors of the zombie apocalypse and the potential menace of other humans who have somehow managed to survive.
With Alicia listening on the radio, the viewers get a chance to hear the desperate voices of the outside world as human civilization falls into chaos. And probably thanks to Alicia, it looks like her family is going to get their first encounter with piracy on the high seas.
On board ship, we can already see the beginnings of a power struggle between Victor Strand and his passengers as they start to make the hard decisions necessary for their survival.
I found the underwater scenes surreal and mesmerizing. I love how cinematically different this is from the Walking Dead! Its like a whole new universe.
I'm now fully invested in the characters introduced to us in the previous season. Obviously, in the future, some of these characters will die while new characters will be introduced. But I can't wait to see what measures this group of survivors will take in order to make it in the New World.
In my opinion, this was the best episode of the series so far. Congratulations Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman on an excellent start to the 2016 season. Can't wait till next Sunday!
Fear the Walking Dead: The Dog (2015)
Best episode so far
Loved the homage to John Carpenter's 'Halloween!(the masks on the rioters and, of course, the killing and eating of the German Shepard).
This episode was interesting and tense from the beginning to the end. The chaos of the urban riots, the creepiness of the frequent power outages, and the maze in the backyard of a neighbor inhabited by a zombie woman were just amazing sequences.
And now the true natures of some of the main characters are starting to emerge (the pacifist teacher, his disgruntled son, his rational wife, her junkie son, her cynical daughter, the Salvadorian refugee father) as the apocalypse approaches.
The surprising twist of the US military showing up at the end only added icing on the cake for a great episode!
Keep it up AMC!
True Detective: Omega Station (2015)
Excellent finale!
The IMDb ratings for the second season of True Detective ranged from as low as 7.9 to as high as 9.4 for the eight episodes. Compiled, the second season of TD has an average rating of 8.6 which is very high and very well deserved, IMO.
Those who criticize the fact that Rey Velcoro compromised his life by going to see his son for one last time simply don't understand who he was. Rationally, he should have gone off with his potential new love to Venezuela and possibly never see his son again. But love is not rational! His love for his son cost Velcoro his life-- because his love for his son was everything! (Guess you could call Velcoro the Rick Grimes of True Detective:-)
