Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Wow! Rekindled my love for Star Trek.
Much as I love Star Trek the ethics behind the shows had got stale and boring and the PG nature of the universe was really holding it back. I was some what dubious when the new reboot came out but it turned out to be great (well, at least the first movie was) Now we have Discovery and it brings everything that I was yearning for to the table.
I don't care that it doesn't fit in with the tech time lines of the established shows or the fact that people swear and have sex (OMG!) as they have updated it for a modern audience while still retaining the 'feel' of the universe.
The characters are great, the effects are great and I am loving the proper episodic nature of the episodes so far and the epic feel the show has (I am writing this after watching S01E07) Lets be fair the franchise really needed a good kick in a different direction to get something that was worth watching again.
The spore drive is genius and the homage to Paul Stamets is something I truly wasn't expecting and I think he would be proud! I have no idea if he was gay but, really, who cares and if you do then you should be ashamed as they have handled the character brilliantly.
Personally I find all the negative reviews hilarious with their accusations of terrible camera-work, wooden acting etc. etc. because it is patently not true. The cast and production team are doing a wonderful job and everything is really beginning to gel together.
It has just enough of an edge to breathe new life into the franchise without going over the top like so many shows do these days.
Star Trek has finally grown up and it is wonderful.
John Cleese: The Alimony Tour (2011)
Save your money
I was quite keen to get hold of this as it's some of the only, as I thought, new material any of the pythons have done for a while.
Unfortunately this show is terrible. A lazy rehash of John's comedy career with a few, not trotted out as often, anecdotes and nods to to fellow contributors along the way. Truly painful to watch as a once great comedian thoroughly phones it in for a paycheck. Admittedly he does tell the audience this at the top of the show but I stupidly thought he was joking.
If John put as little effort into his marriage as this stand up show, I can see why she left him.
Smart Money (1986)
Great Little Movie
I first saw this film on TV in 1986 when I was ten. It's taken me the next 25 years to track it down thank to not being able to remember what it was called.
I recently acquired a copy of it from an unexpected source and while it hasn't aged brilliantly it is still a fun little ride.
The plot is a fairly straight forward revenge thriller, where the guy framed for a crime he didn't commit escapes and decides to get even with the person who framed him.
Features Alexandra Pigg as the love interest, who Bernard Rose the director went on to use in a few other outings of his.
The real reason for watching this is that the hacking sequences portrayed are actually pretty realistic using proper software and hardware that was available in 1986.
For a fledgling geek like me at the time this movie was absolutely a must watch. I am very glad I am now able to revisit it whenever I like.
