Richard Donner said he loved this movie

Warning: Spoilers
Richard Donner, for those of you who don't know who he is, is the director of "Superman: The Movie" from 1978. Now does this movie compare to the original? Yes and no.

First the negatives. 1: The story is a little old. We all know that Lex Luthor is his biggest nemesis on this Earth but it's been done before. Twice in fact (Superman I and IV). Some might say he was part of Superman II but he was not the main villain so I don't count that. Anyway, there are tons of other villains to choose from.

2: Lois Lane's character could have used a little more work in character development. Kate Bosworth did a pretty good job, but there was something missing. Elisha Cuthbert, Claire Danes, Keri Russell, Mischa Barton and Keira Knightley were all considered for the part of Lois as well.

3: Superman has a kid with Lois? That hasn't even been done in the comics. And neither her or Clark/Superman knew it that it was thiers? And is this supposed to be the outcome of their one night stand when he gave up his powers for her? No explanation given...

And for the positives...

1: One word: Nostalgia. I said the story was old, but it still feels like Superman all over again. The movie makes you leave the theater feeling like you really can fly. Brandon Routh does a wonderful job filling the large shoes left by Christopher Reeve. Kevin Spacy is awesome as usual, giving life to the heartless yet comical Lex Luthor, who seems to be more lethal and angry this time around. From the flying title and "S" intro to the final fly over of the world, Nostalgia is definitely the word for this movie. Great, great Nostalgia.

2: The visual effects are amazing. They're not glossy as to be obvious to being effects and they're not over done. Brian Singer does a great job of creating the effect of chasing a plane tearing itself apart and gives Superman great "human" aspects, such as when he's holding on to the wing as it rips off, he let's go and looks back as to think "Well that didn't work" and goes right back to chasing the rest of the plane. The creation of the Kryptonic landmass is nice, as well as the following "save Metropolis from the impending doom" scene. Thanks to CG today he's able to use his powers more effectively and efficiently.

3: The ironic scene of Superman in the hospital. I think this scene was great as to show that even heroes can be hurt, that they need help and support. And it fits with the line that is constantly played in the trailers and movie spoken by Marlon Brando that humans can be a great if they are shown a good example.

I think this movie is a great movie and definitely brings Superman back to the modern day.
