Though we have seen similar stories already numerous times I found the episode mostly decent with decent story and acting, nothing great though.
What wonders me when reading the other reviews is that nobody ever noted what's really going on behind the scenes, how the filmmakers manipulate the viewers feelings so they will exactly have the kind of experience the filmmakers want them to have.
If you know about different personality types then I encourage you to watch this episode again and pay attention to Ash's personality type. Then you'll notice that real Ash is ESTP, chat Ash is ESTP, phone Ash is ESTP but "Robot/Artificial" Ash suddenly has ISTJ personality.
Why this sudden change in personality type? Particularly if the makers of fake Ash could have made his personality also so authentic and real like in the chat and phone conversations? Why would they use a completely different personality type for Robo-Ash? This just doesn't make any sense.
Same as for the behavior of Robo-Ash. On the one hand they could make him 100% look, move and talk like a human, but somehow they failed completely in making him behave ANYTHING like a human?
The makers of Robo-Ash must have been complete imbeciles as they couldn't even program him to keep his eyes shut (!) at night and breath somewhat irregularly during sleeping. Programming that would have been a matter of not even 10 mins, but for some totally unexplained reason the creators of Robo-Ash never "thought" of doing that.
Who of their highly specialized artificial intelligence team could have ever expected that letting their robot lie completely still and stare at the ceiling during night might creep out humans?
Even worse, Robo-Ash misses no opportunity to point out how artificial he is and he is also an outright master in destroying any romantic mood. As "excuse" we are given the explanation that he just had not been programmed for that. What the heck, having sex and romance with a life like robot is probably THE number one thing that customers will want to have most in a human-like robot, so how can it be that the manufacturers somehow haven't even thought of that? Did their whole team consist of asexuals, eunuchs, monks or what?
And how difficult might it have been to let Robo-Ash get SLOWLY hard in romantic moments or when he sees or touches a tit? 20 lines of code? Or less?
Well, the one reason that explains it all is that it were the filmmakers who generated an artificially big difference between phone Ash and physical Ash. First, to get people's expectations high to only destroy them later by making Robo-Ash less convincing of being a human than even the cheapest cartoon character.
Without this trick (or you might also call it: manipulation of the audience) the whole story wouldn't work. If only Robo-Ash would have been the same convincing ESTP that phone Ash was and if they would have implemented a simulation of at least the most basic human behaviors the story would have left quite a different impression.
And it also would have led to much more interesting questions such as what will happen when robots behave as real as humans but have fewer negative traits and are also looking better than us?
Would we then still want to have romantic relationships with real humans or might we then prefer to experience sex and romance with robots who would not only be much better looking than any humans but also much better in bed and much more pleasant and entertaining with their (hopefully optimized) personalities?
Could we humans still compete with such robots?
