U Turn (1997)
10/10
A film about trust
23 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Probably my favorite film by Oliver Stone and one of my favorite opening scenes. Seems to me this film is about the state of the nation when the Indians had the land and the state its in now. None of the reviews I've read of this film have mentioned the images of Indian tribes people that pop onto the screen at various times during the movie. All of the characters in the movie betray each other at some stage. Sort of harks back to the times of broken treaties. Great shots of of the landscape go unnoticed by the the characters as they go about their selfish enterprises. Respect for the land and for one another gone. Amidst some of the humour a sad undertone.

Leviathan (2014)
7/10
A film about Alcoholism
13 January 2015
While i enjoyed this film with excellent performances from all the cast i found it to be very depressing. With bleak surroundings shown with some top notch cinematography in some desolate surroundings. This is a film which shows how easy it is to lose the things we take for granted through neglect friends, family, respect, possessions. At first this seems like a movie about the working class vs the government but reveals itself to be about alcoholism. Drinking in Russia has been a huge (Leviathan) problem to its society. Their is a lot of alcohol consumed in this movie. Nikolai is forced to fight the corrupt mayor over ownership of his property but Nicolai is corrupt himself. He has a beautiful wife second marriage and son (first marriage) both unhappy, bought about by his drinking and his short fuse.During the course of the film Nickolai's problems evolve into giant (leviathan) proportions and the only thing he does to help himself is drink more vodka.
