Gojira (1954)
Why did I give this movie an 8?
When you look at monster or "Kaiju," movies and stories almost always you will start with Godzilla! For a Director to create a movie out of a rubber monster and a miniature city, then to see it evolve into what it has become today, is a feat that is miraculous! The Tech is old, it wasn't really ever good Tech, but the director Ishirô Honda was amazing. Ishirô created a strong emotional connection to Godzilla by the Japanese people! Sure in the first episode of movie in 1954, Godzilla was dangerous to everyone, mostly though because as a Kaiju he was unreasonably huge and just trying to walk somewhere would kill hundreds of people. There was some empathy by Honda who said, not all monsters are evil, it is just they cannot go anywhere without creating a dangerous situation for bystanders."
This empathy that Hondo created eventually gave rise to Godzilla fighting other not so nice enemies and while this has been a popular them, we still see Godzilla as an evil creature at times but just the same, he has come back time and again to save Humanity that is in danger. So no matter which Godzilla has your support I know both Ishirô Honda and Japan will always be able to take credit for starting one of the best Monster Series Movies ever. For those of you who have not seen the movie or movie(s) then just just back and admire work from 65 years ago!
Slumberland (2022)
A pleasant surprise!
I was unaware of this movie when I found it on Netflix. I actually only watched it because it looked like Jason Manoa was in it and I like his work, though I don't exactly know why. Young Marlow Barkley was wonderful and the Chemistry between the two was obvious. I wonder, did they spend some time together to get to know one another for the movie? The adventure as a young girl who lost her father, struggles to find a way to be with him again as she is sent to live with her estranged Uncle, who tries very hard to communicate with his niece, who he does not know.
For me a fairly important part of the hidden plot became apparent fairly early though it doesn't ruin the movie, it actually is a "Feel good," moment. The dream action is amazing with some funny surprises, there is a lot going on in the dreams and these are cleverly mixed with the actual action you are following.
I highly recommend this movie. I would not recommend young children watch this because nightmares are scary, but I think kids 12 and up would be fine. Enjoy a great movie with depth and love.
Cyborg (1989)
I'm being a little generous
So there is not much to like about Jean Claude Van Dam. He is not any kind of an actor, he has less charisma than Steven Seagal and in the real world he was an assistant to Chuck Norris and left with no warning to pursue his dreams of being a great Kung-fu actor, or Karate or Savate or whatever he does. The only thing that saved Chuck Norris from being Jean Claude is that Norris is a nice guy.
Vandamme follows the same pattern in every one of his movies. A drifter, saved a girl, befriends girl, gets the crap beaten out of him then makes a glorious comeback and saves the day.
How much of this can we take? I gave this a 6 because it was an earlier movie made before he got too big for his britches and started cracking walnuts in his butt cheeks. (Some of you will know of what I speak). Cyborg is very much another version of "The Warriors," another 1980's Cult Classic. Cyborg is maybe as good as the Warriors but it will never be a cult classic.
Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child (2016)
Not a Train Wreck but....
This could have been worse but it could have been so much better. The movie wanted to be better. The cast was handed a poorly written and directed movie. Disjointed at times, other times it was pretty good, but it lacked continuity. The only reason to watch the movie is if you are into poorly written first episodes, in hopes of a better sequel. While it wasn't "Brain rotting horrible," it becomes a chore 3/4 of the way through. The ending may have been the best written scene in the whole thing. I am not being facetious, I think it actually put the movie into perspective and gives you hope for something better to come.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Enola Holmes Back and better!
Millie Bobby Brown, rightfully gets to reprise her Role as Enola Holmes. This is a good movie, with a good pace and depicts well, not only the gender inequality of the day, but the "ahem!" Filth level of the times. Why is it every time I watch movies shot in this time period I feel like I need a shower!
The one but of acting they have expanded on is Enola addressing the camera. I really like this! She has sit, intelligence and impeccable timing.
Helena Bonham Carter is her usual wonderful self and their mutual friend is herself an excellent addition to the team. I watched this with my wife who gets bored easily and she really enjoyed it as well. Henry Caville plays an excellent Holmes. I'm not sure about making Moriarty a woman. Not that it won't or didn't work, but because changes for the wrong reason can come back to haunt you. Tewksbury was very well played and we see him slowly becoming the kind of man Enola would spend her life with. It would be nice if she doesn't lose him ever, I would like to see him taking his place at her side. Henry Caville is the perfect personality to play along with Enola and not overshadow her. I'd like another movie please!
The Great Wall (2016)
A pleasant surprise!!
The first time I watched The Great Wall I accidentally found it on YouTube. There was no info, so I was not ready for what was coming! I don't know why it doesn't have a better rating. I think their is some ",Feeling," that Matt Damon does too many movies, but I don't care, he plays his part very well. His partner is the perfect choice and the movie really never slows down once they get to the Wall. It is a good story with a a good plot. I don't know what people expect these days. I've watched this movie five times and I do not find any faults in the plot. I mean, it's a Fantasy Action Movie! Their is little realism to be had, the technology of the times was right. I would like to see a second movie but I would want them to choose the plot very carefully. Again a fun movie, lots of action, watch and enjoy!
Chaos Walking (2021)
It takes a minute to warm up.
I decided to watch this because I like To Holland. Personally I think he is brilliant now and will only get better. I can see him as a future James Bond.
When you first start to watch this movie, it is a bit confusing. I do not recall a movie that follows this theme, where your thoughts are visualized for all to see. Tom plays a young man going through that awkward stage in life, but the reason, while maybe obvious to us, is not obvious to him. All those hormones and nowhere to go, sort of sums up the beginning. That issue alone probably catapulted him into the adventure. There is some scheming, plots inside of plots. You can't take anything at face value. The actual theme is not new, but the Chaos, now that is a must see.
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Sandra Bullock is flawless.
I don't read the other Reviews until after I submit my own. I'm a guy with ecclectic taste in movies and I can forgive little flaws etc. For the right reasons. Fortunately I have never had to forgive anything Sandra Bullock has done. This lady is skilled at her craft. This romance is so deeply touching and hilarious at the same time, that I cannot imagine anyone but Ms. Bullock to play this part. The entire cast has great chemistry, they work well together and Pullman even smiles now and then. The "Sleeping Beauty," premis of this movie is perfect for Peter Gallagher! I'm not a big fan, but being in a Coma is a good part and his role as a confused Fiancè is actually done very well. Most of the Cast is familiar to us all, but I promise they will not disappoint you. Another Romantic Comedy and a darn good one at that!
Moonstruck (1987)
Cher is always amazing
I want to give this movie a nine, but that is the part of me that loves Cher for more than movies. I grew up watching the Sonny and Cher Show. I have seen every movie she has made and I have never faltered as a Fan. Moonstruck, is such a good movie! An unlikely romance, a soft of love triangle involving Nicholas Cage and Danny Aiello, is so much better than you think it will be. Sure it's a tiny bit dated, but with Olympia Dukakis in the mix, age is relative. Danny Aiello is an amazingly dramatic and hilarious Suitor, more in love with his mommy than with Cher, Cage who plays his brother has the right Chemistry to fit in with everyone. You could take this Cast as they are and make a great Sitcom that would be a long running success.
If you and someone you care for, have the time and you like great Romantic Comedies, then you won't be disappointed in Moonstruck!
The Devil's Tomb (2009)
What happened to Cuba Gooding Jr?
This movie should be watched with the POV of "How many things are wrong with it."
Cuba Gooding Jr used to have potential! He used to be fun to watch! From Jerry McGuire to what was the name of the ice cream truck full of chemical agent called? They were always fun, or decent! Now he starts in movies like this Dollar Store Rip -Off of Doom!?? He should be better, he deserves better he must have done something to somebody. He was in either Tuskegee Airmen or Red Tails, but that was a good movie! To see him here is just painful. He must have needed the money, or done a favor for a friend, but I bet he wakes up in a cold sweat at night wishing he had not done this poor excuse for wasting our time. Sorry Cuba, but you just need a better vehicle to get back on track, because I miss the old you!
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011)
Actually a pretty good movie!
Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt are very good together in this strange romance involving Salmon Fishing, Fly Fishing and the Desert! The Romance and the melodrama are well done and that makes the movie very much more enjoyable, don't depend on the salmon.
Fly Fisher folk will wish the fishing scenes were better. The casting is good, a fly pattern or two is discussed but it seems to me the fish could have been better done. Whether the Salmon "Run," or not doesn't make sense, but in the end the whole thing works out. There is a question of what is right and wrong with the rich and the working class, but it really doesn't go very far into it and that may leave you wondering or at least asking questions.
Lou (2022)
I would rate it 7.5 if I could
For those of you who loved the series "Mom" you will see hints of the sarcastic wit that is used here, to add that necessary edge to the main Character Lou. She appears to be something of a hardcore liner and that impression will not lead you too far astray. It takes no time to get used to Mom being rather "Unmotherly," because honestly it's not a big stretch as most fans will know.
The action is tense the story is a bit of a surprise though you have a bit of a brain worm nagging at you until it is exposed.
The Cast is pretty limited, very few people so it is not hard to keep track of. Once again Mom finds a way into your heart through a tiny door that you left cracked open. It lacks a certain amount of emotion, I'm not sure if that was done purposely or not. The ending maybe a little too easy to forsee, but honestly the adventure is worth the watch. Actors did a good job but the script could have had a bit more emotional opportunity. Still a good watch.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Violent, Campi and pretty fun.
I'm not sure what people want from movies anymore? This is a humanized version of an old cartoon, but still it is reasonably original, lots of action, borders on horror but it has some pretty ironic humor. I got into it fairly quickly, there were a couple of twists, lots of dark humor but honestly the end of the movie was almost worth waiting for. If you are looking for a realistic war movie, nope not it. If you're looking for an adventure with a big of terror on a set that was pretty minimal, then have at it.
I don't know how I could have rated it higher, I think it is what it is and they did a good job with what they had.
Svart krabba (2022)
Noomi Rapace is always a must
Black Crab does not really ever let you get to know who is fighting for what. The moral dilemma really shown early in the game, but there is depth to it.
The one thing you learn watching Scandinavian movies is that you are always trying to figure the endgame. They are an acquired taste at first, but when they include Noomi, you have to watch. Somebody commented that she might make an Action Hero? Where have they been.
Watch the movie to see her range as an actor and the storyline is pretty good to.
That's the other thing about non Hollywood movies, they are not made like Hollywood Movies, enjoy the difference.
Alter Ego (2021)
Paradigm shift
When I first started watching this I was pretty cynical. When you listen to why these singers use an Alter Ego though, you realize they are correct and it is a needed thing. You know The Voice? This is really no different, some great talent from people who may not get a chance just because they are "Different!" Watch a couple of shows then do an opinion here.
Lazarus (2021)
Who wrote the dialogue?
I gave this a five, but I am probably being generous. If the dialogue had been better and the Actors had actually used some expression it may have scored better. A cheap knockoff of The Crow.
Field of Dreams (1989)
A Cult Classic?
I know it has been a few years since this movie came out and I know how unlikely it was for it to receive a good review in some areas.
The dialogue is a little rough, bordering on. Rough and amateurish, but I have been watching this movie a couple of times a year for a long time.
I think the dialogue is right at where it should be. I never feel that the. Lines are giving the movie a bad name, because they don't!
This movie is strip back into time, a surprising amount of depth and I need tissues at the end of every showing.
Sure there are some small errors but it is so well done, in that it brings up the past with our parents from a Teenagers perspective, that I found myself thinking of my own Father and Mother. It reminds me that I always was such a self righteous git and I wish I had been a better Son. I hope you watch the movie, so don't ignore this one.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Unexpectedly Fun!!
I was kind of expecting the worst. I am an older guy seeking my childhood through animated movies. I enjoyed every minute of this and I regret nothing. I still don't know who did voices, but everything about it was great! I would love to see more! Thank you for making this such a good watch!!
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Why do we think everything has a message
I have seen far worse movies with higher ratings. Bruce Willis played exactly the part they wanted and he may have had to fulfill a contract so he made this. If it wasanyone but Willis, it would have a higher score but the prejudice here is obvious. Is it a good movie? No it isn't, but it is not that bad. I think it will do better on Netflix than anywhere else and I like Willis. Critics will take the opportunity to slam him and the movie, but critics mean very little to action movie watchers.
Nabillera (2021)
A movie from the heart!
Almost immediately, the characters are introduced and from then on it is a heart wrenching story of challenge, rising from the ashes and maybe being born anew.
I think it teaches us that what we love in life is far more important than what others think we need. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Dark Was the Night (2014)
Great cast
This would have been a terrible movie, one of those "B" movies you end up watching because it is just good enough.
Kevin Durant was really the best part of the show. There was good chemistry happening between he and Haas, I think they both deserve praise for the part they played in it. Well worth the watch!!
Disneyland: The Treasure of San Bosco Reef: Part 1 (1968)
Good Walt Disney Fare
I'm watching this from the perspective of having seen it when it first came out in '68 to watching it now.
The only issue I ever really had with Disney was the Americanization of many productions by using actors with fake accents, or white actors coming off as different ethnic individuals. Still it is a good old Disney production your family can watch and the excitement is real enough. Enjoy the movie and remember when Disney was a true family entity.
Shane (1953)
The Best Western Ever Made
I first watched Shane for English class in 1970. My teacher was Mr. Alex Wilson. He had watched Shane 32 times by that time. We took it apart to examine each aspect the Writer and Director had put into it. I truly didn't appreciate it until later in life. This is not the glitzy pirate style Western we all enjoy. This is in this viewers opinion a far closer truth than most Westerns. Alan Ladd is amazing, Van Hefflin is the unsung hero who more than holds his own. Their Son really asks all the right questions, emphasizes the right moments. Just an enjoyable movie, well worth watching it several times in your lifetime.
