The Baker (2007)
Absolutely hilarious! Applause!!!
This film is absolutely hilarious!!! I hope this film gets released in the US (I've seen it via a Hungarian DVD). Those of you in the UK, take note: The DVD is released in the UK on March 3, 2008. For anyone (anywhere in the world) seeking something to make them laugh and smile, this is an excellent choice! If this film is within your reach, by cinema or DVD, seek it out.
Writer-director Gareth Lewis provides a great story, excellently told with lots of refreshing originality, tons of laughs, and perfect casting throughout. Damian Lewis is absolutely wonderful in the lead role, displaying the perfect blend of comedy, action and romance. Hats off, bravo and well done to everyone involved in this immensely enjoyable and entertaining film! APPLAUSE APPLAUSE APPLAUSE! :-)
Does God Play Football (2004)
Thumbs up :-)
Thanks to the British Council and Meanpeach, I received an email invitation to view this film online during its brief engagement as the Featured Short Film at the British Council's site (www.britfilms.com). I am very glad to have accepted the invitation and view this film. It is very entertaining, engaging and thought-provoking. A great way to spend 10-11 minutes, and I would have watched longer if it were a longer film. I already consider Helen McCrory a true treasure among today's acting community, and she shines in this performance. Kevin McKidd is equally solid, and the young newcomer Michael DeBurca is a delight. I'll be spreading the word to friends about this film and hope they will go online to view it as I did. Bravo and thumbs up!
Keane (2004)
Keane is an amazingly wonderful film experience that I will never, ever forget.
I saw this film at the Atlanta Film Festival (June 12, 2005). When the final frame of this film went to black, my instant reaction was my lips mouthing the word "Wow" -- and I mean that in the absolute best of all possible connotations. I have never had a film reach me like this before -- in this way and so deeply. Some of the reviews have talked about how this film reaches viewers on a visceral level. Very, very true. It goes straight to the heart, straight to the soul, straight to the core of your being. It soars straight passed that part of us that analyzes and articulates. Some articles about the film have suggested that audiences might feel drained or exhausted from watching it. I didn't leave the film exhausted or drained. Mesmerized is probably a better description of how I felt. I was completely absorbed in the film from the first frame through the final one. Lodge Kerrigan has created a truly exceptional film, and Damian Lewis delivers a truly outstanding performance in the title role. If anyone ever seeks an example of an empirically perfect match of actor, role and story, this is it. Keane is an amazingly wonderful film experience that I will never, ever forget. I am immensely grateful to count myself among those who have had the fortune to see this film. If you have the chance to see Keane, see it.
