Leonard is one of the most towering and talented musical figures in the history of this country, yet this movie has NOTHING to do with any of that.
Instead, it's a trope about how ALL of us are, deep down, homosexuals, and society has been and continues to be a stone that crushes the best of us (homosexuals), and therefore everything beautiful in humanity. Never mind the fact that, in the current age, it is nearly illegal to NOT be homosexual, making this ridiculous arc upon which the movie rests, spurious.
Of course, the the undertow plot, which is raved about as the main plot, is the bravery and strength of the "woman" that must endure the man's depravity for the greater good of family, society, art and culture, another trope de jour as jaded as modern society itself. In real life, she was a second rate actress that hitched her star to a flamboyant and famous MAN with earning power, and nothing more. But in today's world, ONLY the female can be the hero.
Cooper had an opportunity here to introduce an American cultural legend to a new generation, as well as reveal in-depth knowledge and insights in to the MAN's life and art, while putting his craft, his MUSIC on full display. Instead, he went for what his generation reveres, the glorification of depravity and elevation of mediocrity, producing a movie as vapid as the times.
