Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959)
Work of a great team!
This is really a milestone in world cinema - not just Indian cinema. The story, the lyrics, songs, music, photography, editing and above all class act. Everyone has poured their heart in this film. This indeed is a poetry in form of a film. Though the topic is very depressing it but reflects reality from eyes of a defeatist, maybe the only flaw I see in the picture, and perhaps the reason why the film never saw a good box office record. However, it may have a lot to do with personal struggles of Guru Dutt at the time of making of this film. Only if the film had been about triumph of human struggle to overcome all odds, outcomes could have been different. A lot of credit is given to Guru Dutt alone, however I feel the classic nature of this film has a lot to do with contribution of everyone - the music is touching today as I suppose it might have been then. One who has never seen Wahida Rehman in younger days is dazed at her beauty and innocence. Guru Dutt himself looks rather handsome. Kaifi Azmi's lyrics are just inimitable. Photography is great - considering it was done in 50a. I came up with the DVD by chance and I'm now going to see more of Guru Dutt's work. I not for a moment want to deny Guru Dutt his share of glory, however one must also acknowledge other geniuses who made this movie a classic!
Eklavya (2007)
Techincally Weak
The movie is mediocre at best. Definitely not worth the hype. The movie is plagued by a weak storyline and editing.Old Bollywood plot being used for past 60 years used for this movie. The movie show signs of weak editing. The movie has been stretched around Amitabh and lacks character development of other actors in the movie. One can understand he is a main selling point, but actors like Sanjay, Jackie suffer. Hardly any time is devoted to their character development. Information has been repeated in several scenes. For a short running movie this is definitely a sign of weakness. I suppose the pre-production was not well thought.Information is repeated several times. Scenes are pro-longed unnecessarily. This makes the movie boring between the middle run. I would say the movie is technically and directorial weak. Seems like a dry soap opera at best.
Don (2006)
There is only one DON!!
What a let down! Sometimes you are amazed the best in town have no creativity. Only good part in the movie is the ones copied from the original. SHK is now on decline - this movie shows he is no longer the king. He is now signaled to adapt like Amitabh to look for character roles. Karena was a wrong choice to match Helen for the famous song. She showing the extra pounds in them tight dress she does not justify, neither does she have the dance grace. Even Boman Irani does not match the Inspector King - Iftekhar!! I think the team just a poor job on casting and adapting. I did not see a point to the movie, where the director and screenplay writer did not think to adapt the movie and actor casting. Well I was stuck in hall in between people so I stay put else would have moved out faster.. well I had to come back and watch the original DON!! As I said there is only one DON!! This is a lame excuse to waste time and money.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
What a bore
This has got to be one of the most boring movie of them all. If ever there was a movie made just for the heck of making it - KANK would top it. What a waste of $$. Karan Johar has run out of ideas and so has SK & Gang. It is a stretch from their old movies with no story. Abhishek and SK have no chemistry. Obviously it should have been Saif Khan. Amitabh is different and the only credit to the film. I have no other comments - since this site has restriction to put at least 10 lines, I'm going to copy my review (just like this movie). Email Karan Johar for money back on this movie.. This has got to be one of the most boring movie of them all. If ever there was a movie made just for the heck of making it - KANK would top it. Fanaa (2006)
Great Beginning.. Mediocre Middle and Confused Ending
Great Beginning.. Mediocre Middle and Confused Ending The movie opens with a Bang! You are just hooked to Kajol and Aamir. They definitely give their best in first 30 mins. The supporting actors are also good. On the whole the movie has you asking for more for the first 30 mins. It kind of gets too much with the poetry you have got to be well versed with the local dialect to understand what they are speaking. I mean most was some stuff we know what it means, but not really as you have got to understand the underpinning of what they are speaking. On the whole the plot is little far fetched a kind of well to do girl from Kashmir falls for a guide in Delhi. But hey who is complaining with Aamir Khan he's already done to Karishma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani! However, the plot thickens (or I should say loosens) after 45 mins. It is obvious where the movie is going. The director or the story fails at letting us know why the characters are as they are they assume we have enough Bollywood experience to assume and understand the side plots. The movie lacks professional cinematography and hence we are just feeling that most of movie is shot in studio. It does not give a feeling of grandiose. Well lets say it is a great made for TV movie.
Tathastu (2006)
Sanjay Dutt Rocks!
Yes, this is a remake of John Q. Yes, you cannot help compare to Denzel. However, this is a definite top 10 movies of Sanjay Dutt. He has given solid performance. He is on top of his game in this movie. You cannot help but be involved. I have seen John Q and was wondering if it will be a waste of time. However, as movie progressed Sanjay has really made it worth the watch (both time and money!). Recently there has been a string on nonsense movies coming. So I was impressed. However the plot is bit radical especially a made for Indian audience ending. However, I don't think this is anyone else but Sanjay's movie! I just hope the choice of actors were better. Amisha is not suited for the role at all. I think Antra would have done better. Amisha was not able to bring or compliment the emotions needed. Even her make up was not suited for the role. She is pretty dumb to adapt to roles. I saw her teesri aankh. Even there she was lame. For her role she should have made an attempt to learn the sign language. So in this respect this was a half hearted attempt by the director and producer. I don't think failure of movie can be blamed at Sanjay. At best he is the only asset to the movie.
The Second Front (2005)
One of the worst movies ever - I agree!
I agree - this has to be one of the worst movies ever. I must admit that the designers of DVD cover work harder than the director to cox us in renting such movies. This was the case for me too. I wish I had read the review before I rented this movie. I agree; even if I'm given the option for free rental - it is still not worth it. The other thing I don't understand the 10 line minimum on the review on of a movie I really don't have much to say about. So I'm just going to keep writing and wasting some lines here. But I'm writing to be heard and to save others to refrain from renting this movie. There are other great independent titles to get!
Bluffmaster! (2005)
Copy of "Nine Queens"
When will Indian movie makers learn to give up copying foreign plots?? This is a lift of "Nine Queens" an excellent Latino film I had seen some years back. I guess the writer / director had one thing in mind "how to get a 1:30 Hr film to be a 2:10 Hr film", for that they arbitrarily threw in songs and boring plots and scenes. Boman for e.g. when explaining to Abhishek to live life the fullest is rather a drag. Everything from story, theme and camera movement are copied and does not suit the movie or the actors at all. I hear this movie is a box office success - ah well that goes to show what formula works for Indian cinema. This is only going to prompt other Indian directors and producers to attempt copies. So when Indian cinema takes 1 step forward (Rang De Basante) it is also thrown back 10 steps by movie attempt such as this one!
Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (2005)
Great Watch
I think this is a great Hindi movie I have watched after a long time. Of course this is a great Bollywood Masala. I hope people remember what Bollywood is about and forget about comparing it to Hollywood. In comparison to other Hindi movies' of the year, this is definitely on the top. Fardeen acting is great, Kay Kay really shows what he is all about. He has really done well. Of course Feroz Khan is at his best as he is always. Even though he shows visible age, the dialogue delivery is as ferocious as always. I wish he had a bigger part in the movie. The romance in the movie is about right and where it should be. The movie has really been edited well. The pace of the movie is about what it should be. I usually, will finish a 2Hr 30m movie in 1Hr, FF all songs, unnecessary scenes and mocked fights. But I really enjoyed all bits of this flick. I really think that Fardeen has a making of a great actor if he is cast in these sophisticated roles.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Wasted
Maybe my hopes of a Jane Austen adaptation are too high. I have seen the trailer and just with that gives a thumbs down. What was the casting director thinking? None, I may say none of the actors match the role. Again maybe my expectations are too high after the last two very much loved adaptations - i.e. Sense & Sensibility and BBCs Pride and Prejudice. Both these adaptions are a marvel and a definite collectors item. This one looks like a made of rTV movie. Funny I even wonder if they shot it in English countryside as most scenes kind of make me feel it is the dry American summer in Carolina. Even Donald Sutherland who is a fine actor no way matches his role. I'm sorry but I'd wait for it to be shown on TV, which I'm sure will be sometime early next year...
Red Riding Hood (2003)
What a waste of my 4 bucks!!!
This is about the worst movies of all times which I have ever managed to even go beyond the first 10 minutes. What was the dude thinking!! This is absolutely a waste of a time going to local video store to rent the movie and of course the 4 bucks and change in renting it. The movie is obviously very poorly directed on a digital camera on a very low budget. I have nothing against low budget home made movies but this is really a clear death for everyone in the movie. Whatever little talent anyone in the movie might have or chance to make it; it lost on account of a poorly directed and complied script. Please spare yourself the agony and frustration and read a book rather than rent this movie... I wish I could claim my money back from the director and producers
Septem8er Tapes (2004)
Movie's been shot in Rajasthan - India
This is a complete Hoax...
The movie clearly has been shot in north western Indian state of Rajasthan. Look at the chase scene - the vehicles are Indian; the writing all over is Hindi - language used in India. The drive through is on typical Jaipur streets. Also the palace is in Amer - about 10 miles from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The film-makers in their (about the film) in DVD Bonus seem to make it sound that they risked their lives shooting in Kabul and around. Almost all of their action scenes are shot in India. The scene where they see a group singing around fire is so fake that they did not even think about changing it to Afgani folk song. They just recorded the Rajasthani folk song. How do I know it because I have traveled that area extensively. They are just on the band-wagon to make big on the issue. I do challenge the film makers to deny it.
