Venus (2022)
What a ride!
I am so impressed with this movie!
We start of with fun which immediately takes a dark turn, and you are sure you are in a crime drama.
The it drops down into the lows of dysfunctional family dynamics, and becomes rather depressing.
And that, coupled with the crime elements spinning up, you are introduced as a mere background effect: the sinister Lovecraftian Horror, on a TV set as if it is not even worth a mention.
The human drama then gets revved up like an old '57 V8, grumbling and mumbling words of Cthulhu!
The story escalates into absolute insanity! Blood, gore, and evil manifest! And while the darkness of eternity boils over, the crime elements explodes in full force, and during all of this, the family drama takes a darkest turn.
I would recommend this to those who appreciate rather hectic movies, but who are willing to join on the human drama.
The visuals are great! The experience is authentic without resorting to stupid 'found footage' tricks.
The audio is good.
But! The mixing of different genre story lines make this an absolute gem.
Tin & Tina (2023)
Did I see something else?
The low ratings and complaints regarding this stunning Gothic Horror Story, is unfair.
Sadly, I watched a 'dubbed' version which was a terrible idea.
That aside:
The story starts quite depressing: death, loss and emotional trauma.
Enter the kids: innocent to the point of evil! Sweetly done, showing the absolute madness which can boil from imaginative, yet misguided minds.
The story, I think is simple, probably why so many find it 'too little', however, I think it is a rather pleasant Gothic experience.
The visuals are authentic, the setup for 1981, was convincing.
I can also see why some might find it annoying (the dubbed version voicing is... entertainingly off). The constant melancholy of the lead lady, will drive most to annoyance, but it is part of the personal drama, which ends in the final scene: perfectly.
I would only recommend to those who enjoy a bit of Gothic mystery and madness.

Really Good
6.1 rating at time of review: it is shameful!
Really, it is undignified to give this a low rating.
My goodness, the story is engaging, the characters alive, the premise ('super-natural') adds fantastical exotic spice.
And yes, it is a Super-natural Thriller, not a horror or action movie. It is creative and intense, I just loved some of the scenes!
Gorgeously done.
I watched this very late (early morning hours, thinking I'll fall asleep while watching it) and was very much surprised by how good this movie is.
I did not fall asleep, in fact it held my attention.
Highly recommended.
(I would like to make it a 9/10 to off-set the bad reviews, but rather just gave what I think it is due)
Contracted (2013)
PERFECT Horror!
Yes, my opinion is that this movie is perfect!
Disclaimer: if you expect a normal zombie horror, you might understand the 5/10 review. However, if you see Horror as a metaphor: this one is a real masterpiece.
!!!!SPOILERS!!!!
This movie takes you on a psychological journey of destruction, sorrow and loss. The whole things is a metaphor on a woman who was drugged and raped by a sociopath. This is the real story.
The physical changes she goes through are all metaphors for personality changes. I can really go into all the details, step by step, relating how this is exactly what happens to the psyche of a woman so abused. Unfortunately, such a monster hid among my friends.
Everything post rape spun out of control because she did not want to tell what happened, nor even think about it, for fear of what she will loose. (In real life, the rapist will gaslight his victim into a false fear of 'others' while maintaining that 'he can be trusted' -- this is not part of this story).
The Second movie takes it a step further. Once the psyche is damaged and the path of denial and self destruction ran its course, the victim of rape becomes the monster. She does not rape, but things she does destroys lives around her.
The man who was obsessed with her, he did not love nor care for her, got what he wanted from her and he in turn started to destroy people around him, even his own chance of real love.
Men who drug and rape tell themselves that they do nothing wrong, that it is 'just sex', that it is just 'open minded adult fun'. They are conceited, living in a rapist fantasy world and they destroy lives.
I think they are worst than the typical violent rapists, because their victims are infected with their sickness, like this movie portrays.
The victims of violent rape, well they know and live with the reality, so the insidious poison never takes them down.
Please: if you know men who drug and rape, name and shame, help the victims find justice and peace. It is as bad as this movie portrays.
10/10 for masterful metaphor, for telling a story that must be told.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Glorious and Inspiring
Some mentioned it is 'slow', I think it is mature. Very well paced for me, I enjoyed the journey and I really had a fantastic time watching this.
It lost 2 stars for this:
1) Alternate Universe where people cannot conceive 'The Thing' that is 'The Problem' (I do not want to give away too much, I knew nothing and enjoyed the unraveling, but the cultural ignorance is a bit annoying)
2) Some long winded monologues with not-so-subtle cultural criticisms made me want to fast-forward to the next scene (good or bad, culture should be respected)
As an unexpected result, this little story made me appreciate Catholic rituals more (being a heathen myself!).
Well done, your efforts are appreciate!
Mindhunter (2017)
Really Good
Season one, like most pointed out, is superb.
Season two... like most cop stories.
Season three would probably have been bad if the trend continued.
I think, S2 should have focused on BTK and other psychos and not spend all that time on one wasted case.
(Most families never got resolution, which is a bit of a spoiler)
The Sinner (2017)
Superb
Bill Pullman plays a very complex, real person. Each of the crimes are humanized, seeing that the perps are real people, creates a very intense experience.
If you have ever been so unlucky to face such torment in your own life, coming face to face with the deeply disturbed and criminal, you too will know that they are real people, however, they lack that bit of essential humanity... this show, my word, does exemplify the actual drama of dealing with the afflicted, the lost, and how their affliction is contagious (Season 3!).
An absolute must watch for those who ponder the human condition.
(10/10 would be too much, but really, it can be that, I just do not know what more could have been done)
Vdova (2020)
Better than expected!
Firstly: I hate Blair Witch copies, and pretty much anything depending on shaking handheld cameras.
The first 15 minutes or so was therefore quite challenging.
The Movie is not the gore/slasher/evil type of horror, it is simply creepy. The buildup, the characters, the atmosphere: great!
I do believe this movie is under-rated, 3.9? I give it an easy 7.
In fact, it is probably better but I started of expecting crap and the first section lived up to the expectation.
On the second viewing, the annoyance was gone, and the creep factor was pure entertainment. My spawn got all wrapped up and ranted in monologues about how things are not supposed to be like that! Fun, fun, Fun!
Intersect (2020)
Attention span dependent
Cons: some of the acting, in the beginning is a bit 'soap opera' and a bit wooden. Sit through it. I imagine all the low ratings came from people with 3 minute attention spans, which oddly match their IQs.
Pro: This is a master piece of time dilation unlike anything ever. Beautifully done with, completely original character development. I will not give anything away. There is a lot to this move and rating it below 6 is an insult to sentience.
I adore this movie for the courage, the vision, the art, the wonderful trip (even though a lot of it felt like watching a family/school movie, with added real oddness).
This is not 'horror' or 'sci-fi': it is itself and it is very good.
The VelociPastor (2018)
Rewind and Watch again!
Rewind and watch some scenes again... not something I would typically do.
There is no way that this perfect gem could be a product of accident, it is to consistently and wonderfully cheesy!
