Jim Gaffigan: Dark Pale (2023)
Just okay
Jim is usually hilarious to the point I rewatch and laugh endlessly at his specials. This one, I actually found myself thinking about turning it off. Just over an hour and maybe half of it is worth watching and half of that makes you laugh. If you find yourself thinking of turning it off, go ahead you aren't really missing much and definitely not a one liner you will find yourself repeating to friends. Really for me if this is how future specials, if any, are going I am sad to lose Jim as a good comedian. If you have to watch, just go in expecting a lesser show, it will help. I don't know if you saw some of his small stuff before Beyond the Pale, this feels like that. His timing is off, his stories are a bit too long before a punchline. Overall if you are a diehard fan it isn't bad, if you are looking to try Jim's comedy out for the first time, check out any of his other specials instead.
What We Do in the Shadows: Go Flip Yourself (2022)
Boring, awful and unfunny
This episode is the only one so far that I didn't find funny. It was so boring I almost just turned it off. I can't imagine how this episode got made.
The episode wasn't funny in pretty much any way. The premise was silly and not in the usual entertaining way. None of the characters really go to interact and carry the show how they normally do.
Just an boring episode, so slow and lack luster. I was watching it without ads on Hulu and had to restriain myself over and over from hitting fast forward 10 seconds.
The ending was ridiculous and so anticlimatic. Also quite a few characters weren't even really shown or used in this episode like usual. Just why?
The Orville: From Unknown Graves (2022)
Sci-Fi Troupe again again again
I really hoped The Orville would pay tribute to sci-fi but continue to push boundaries and toss in slight humor. However this episode just shows how they too can fall victim to sci-fi troupe writing.
B Positive (2020)
Bad
How did this get made? The concept is bad, the acting is very bad, the writing is bad and wrong, the forced laugh track is bad, the... I don't think I should list all the bad things that will take too long. The good. Um, you might laugh one good time, I did. So three stars for one good laugh.
9-1-1: Kids Today (2019)
Stupid start, great finish
The episode starts horribly with an idiot premise that could be solved in 2 seconds yet is ignored and made worse by explaining the situation away in an impossible way. Almost shut off the show. However the rest of the show goes well in it's usual cheese but not too much, fun way. Ends on a great cliffhanger and overall made the episode worth watching.
The Wolverine (2013)
Great Adaptation
For those wondering why this movie has such a low rating, it could be due to the fact that tons of reviews are a 3 out of 10 based on facts the reviewers missed when watching the movie. Tons and tons of reviews complain about plot holes, when said plot holes were addressed in the movie themselves and weren't really holes at all. So don't take the low rating to heart.
This movie has some amazing action and acting. You get to see the character of Logan lost and adrift, start to learn about what it means to exist in a world where all those around him are mortal and will die. The scenery is great, the acting is great and the story follows pretty well the comic to the screen. Are their differences, yes, quite a few. So if you are one of those types that can't appreciate the two mediums for being different and having to portray stories differently, then don't watch this movie.
Overall this movie has a great story that keeps you engrossed in the movie. You quite often can feel the anguish and loneliness that Logan feels. You also get to see The Wolverine as the lead, as the loner and as the bad ass he really is. You see him fight with who he really is and what he wishes he could be. For a comic movie, the story is much deeper than usual and makes for a great watch.
Mother's Day (2016)
Dumb Fun
It seems as though a lot of people went into this movie expecting Shakespeare. This movie did what it was supposed to do, made me laugh. Does the movie have some camp, yes, but with any movie intended to be watched with your mother in the room it will be a bit campy. With all the bad reviews you would think no one can appreciate a simple, clean, family comedy without tits, drunkenness, teenage sex or cussing. Now I for one am a big fan of all those things and enjoy them quite extensively in other movies. However this movie was exactly what it should have been, cute, quirky, obvious jokes, with a bit of family values and mom appreciation added to round it all out. Throw in a big helping of respect for a single dad and you have a great movie. Is it a 10, no, is it a 5 that it is sitting at, not even close. If you are looking for National Lampoon or Broken Lizard you will be severely disappointed, if however you want a movie you can laugh at, feel good about and enjoy with your mom, this is every bit the 7 I gave it.
