Awful Nice (2013)
A wonderful mixed bag of low budget production value and hilarious comedy
I grabbed this as an iTunes 99 cent rental based on the trailer.
Aside from Swingers, this was quite possibly the worst production value I've seen in a film with this kind of distribution. The audio quality was terrible, the lighting was amateur, the editing was simple, and overall, it was just really low budget.
But I watched the entire film and laughed the entire time. The acting was great, the script was fantastic, and the characters were perfect. The location could not have been better for the story, and the use of music (i.e. Dr. Dog) was spot on.
Which all goes to show, when you have a good story and good actors, you could shoot it on VHS and be successful. Film is about storytelling, not resolution or film grain or VFX or all-star casts.
This film succeeded in telling a compelling story with flying colors, and made me laugh (hard) for 90 minutes. A+++
Blackhat (2015)
I wish I woulda watched Heat again instead
This was pretty flat. It had some potential, but let's face it, Luke is not Chris.
For the first 40 minutes I had problems staying awake, and I put this in at 7:15pm. I found the opening scene animation of the malware doing its damage to be long, drawn out and gratuitous.
Then it happened again. Same thing. They may have just cut and paste the same clips in for most of it. Ugh.
Once some action started picking up I was no longer nodding off, but it was still just very flat. Even the action was pretty lame. And everything about it was predictable.
The actress who played Thor's brother's love interest put in a solid performance, though, it was just a boring part.
EDIT: I JUST REALIZED THIS IS CHRIS HEMSWORTH. It was so flat I assumed it was one of the brothers. That makes it even more disappointing.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
This was actually good
I had a lot of fun watching this movie.
I wasn't expecting a lot but I really enjoyed it. Close to as good as T2. Khaleesi Connor was fantastic. The Governator was good. The other two guys were really good too. Oh and Simmons was great. Even the comic relief stuff was truly laugh out loud funny.
I have a feeling that this movie, much like Dumb and Dumber To, would have been better received had it come out in the 90's.
It did pretty much everything I wanted a Terminator film to do, and did all of that stuff very very well.
I'd still prefer original movies to reboots, sequels, comic book franchises, etc. But if Hollywood isn't gonna give that to us, I would happily settle for well made sequels and reboots that have original ideas like this one did.
Basically all of the stuff I liked about Transcendance (which was not that good, but had interesting parts), is done better here, and wrapped around a Terminator movie.
