The Assistant (2019)
The most cinematic and well shot boring movie I've seen
From a film making point of view this is fantastic. There's an eerie undertone throughout somehow making mundane daily activities look sinister. And there's an extensive use of center-framed God's-eye view shots that were stunning.
But the pacing of this movie drags terribly because nothing on screen is engaging content-wise. I almost fell asleep in the middle and when I made it to the end, I was shocked that it was only 85 minutes.
It was completely mismarketed as a thriller, the trailer even contained a quote using the word thriller but it is definitely not. The only thrilling thing I felt during this movie was when the credits rolled so I could leave the theater.
But the ending left me confused about what I was supposed to take away. I feel like this movie is trying to say something about the toxic working environment that this women endures, but it totally falls short and comes across as empty.
The Bronze (2015)
Came out of nowhere. Was laughing the whole time
I was just expecting your run-of-the-mill comedy, but this film surpassed expectations. Hope, the main character is a foul-mouthed and sometimes downright mean person, but once you get over the fact that she wouldn't be your best friend, she really is the star of the show. If you mind dirty jokes or off-beat humor, this might not be your movie, but I found it utterly hilarious.
And I must give praise to Haley Lu Richardson as Maggie Townsend. She is always upbeat despite the constant criticism thrown her way by Hope. She matures over the course of the film and you can really see the bond between an aspiration gymnast and her reluctant coach.
Gary Cole is great as the loving father trying to push his daughter to do better.
The plot does have a slightly ridiculous way of setting up Hope to be the coach, but it works. The film had surprisingly good cinematography and great choices of music to great comedic effect. It's a funny movie and actually made me care about gymnastics.
It also contains one of the funniest sex scenes in recent memory (that's all I'll say on that)
