Well Oiled (1947)
Woody...punished?
This is one of the last Woody cartoons written by Dynamic Duo Hardaway-Schaffer, and one of the finest. This is the last of the "victims getting the bird at the ending" style, which begun with "Ski For Two" and continued with "Smoked Hams","Coo-coo Bird" and "Solid Ivory". Back to this one, here Woody is driving his car on the road and his gas tank gets empty. In a typically "Woody Woodpecker" way to solve things, he starts stealing gas from a nearby car, only to find out that it's a police car-and worse, Wally is the cop! After some hilarious oil-fighting and being cheated in every way imaginable, finally WW gets him, in a really bizarre and outrageous way. His Woody impersonation at the ending is one of the most remarkable moments in Woody history! This one confirms my thesis: Dick Lundy simply HATED Woody, and loved torturing him sadistically every time he directed one of his pictures. Great, granted fun for everyone!
Seein' Red, White 'n' Blue (1943)
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yooooooooooooo!
Of all the propaganda cartoons made during the WWII, those made by Paramount always seemed to me the most childish and offensive, and with this one is no exception. Recorded one year after the nip-away extravaganza "You're a sap, Mr. Jap, this one shows Bluto ,the once world most extra ordinary fellow as the brave Sinbad, trying at any cost to escape from drafting. Just like on those shorts where him and Popeye wants to get broken to be hospitalized by Olive, here he tries to get horribly injuried and not get drafted. He eventually succeeds on that, but as usual the Patriotism hits him in the heart when he sees Pop being slaughtered by five stereotypical japs. Here the good minutes of the short begins. Popeye wakes up, chomps his spinach, makes Bluto swallow the can and they transform into the Fist of Justice, butchers the nips, give Mr. Hirohito his last waltz, then obviously go sock Adolf"Peeeeeeeee-yooooooooooo" Hitler (the most ridiculous Adolf caricature ever made). At the ending Bluto agrees with being drafted. After all the caricatures and the unimaginative plot, this one is somewhat cool to see, even being a little childish at times.
7 outta 10.
Baton Bunny (1959)
What's Opera, Doc is boring...
Man, some might disagree with me, but in my opinion, compare this CJ's masterpiece with the so protected by fans "What's opera, Doc" is as possible as compare the sun with the moon. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! I don't care all other Bugs fans who love and lay on the floor venerating that overproduced, overmusical and underviolent cartoon, to me that ARToon is very, very, very annoying. In other hand, this one set my mind on fire every single time I watch it. Maestro Bugs Bunny tries to conduct an orchestra, but he's disturbed all the time by a persistent, annoying fly who tries at any cost give to Bugs his last waltz. The best parts of the toon is when Bugs puts his glasses( does he need one?) upside down and reads the overtures in upside down too, and that hilarious act of cavalry-and-Indian he does while he conducts the band(when he blows the trombone as a cannon and kills himself is priceless!). All of this without forget the manic ending, when he destroys all the instruments od the orchestra trying to squash the fly. This one can make a headbanger love classic music! WATCH IT!!!
