Enduring Love (2004)
This is just about the music!
It may have been the cohesive and precise playing of the Royal Philharmonic, but, Mr Sams, as orchestrated by Mr Austin, has produced a compelling, gripping and exhilarating supportive musical soundtrack that is redolent of William Walton, Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Malcolm Arnonld and BenjaminBritten, with a side of Samual Barber, Arthur Butterworth and a hint ofFrederick Delius and a smidgen of Copeland/Bernstein. I caught the movie on Showtime and realized I was being seduced by the music as much as the acting and 'veddy' British diction on a surprisingly understated and literate text. The music, though not "new" as in innovative, is markedly engaging. It deserves to be released on CD independent of the movie. Emblematic of the quality of this composition, is the music which accompanies the end-credits: it's a recessional that is more of an exit overture. Listen to this music!
6 Rms Riv Vu (1974)
Superbly acted, extremely funny presentation.
There are no finer comedies. This is laugh-out-loud, comedic extravaganza. Alda and Burnett are wonderful, and the support is equally excellent. This needs to be released on DVD!! The pace is rhythmic and the story human, sensitive and hysterical. Is anyone listening?! The human condition is sensitively portrayed. The characters, though comedic, are fleshed out beautifully. Alda and Burnett are at their pinnacle, but the supporting cast is equally engaging, and equally funny as they support the development. As comedies go, this is up there with the finest of Neil Simon; The Good-bye girl comes to mind a an appropriate comparison to the quality and touching humanity of fine comedy!
