A good kind of bad
28 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Thank you Chandler Levack for making the autistic character not likeable. In all the previous movies I have watched where the lead character is autistic, the character has always made to be portrayed as a good person. This gives an impression that all autistic people are likable, which far from the reality. Here, Lawrence acts like an entitled prick to his mother, self-centered to Alana, and overtly narcissistic to Matt. This lack of understanding and lack of ability to put yourself in other's shoes is lacking in Lawrence which is a major sign for his autism. In the last 10 min, he starts to learn how to listen, which ends the movie on a positive note.

Light-hearted one time watch
13 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is very different from the book, so I will not try to compare it to the book and try to see it in its own light. Both the lead actors are not believable in their characters. There is not enough time given to the characters to develop the chemistry. Hadley's fear of closed spaces was picturized at the time of take-off, but then it did not come-up during rest of the flight, the cab to church, the bus to memorial, etc. Hadley's phone losing the charge right after she got down of a flight is also unbelievable. A grown-up getting lost is full-on fantasy. The movie is trying hard to be visually appealing and vivacious at the expense of emotions closer to reality, chemistry and continuity.

Everybody is a villain
27 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Villains are generally seen in sci-fi/fantasy movies. In drama movies, if there is any villain, that is situation itself. This is the first movie I have come accross where every character is a villian. Ellie is the most obvious one. She is utterly disrespectful to Charlie and Thomas. She hangs with Charlie for money, posts disrespectful messages about Mary and Charlie (and maybe many others), and manipulates Thomas. She even records Thomas's confession without consent and uses it to turn him in to his parents.

Charlie virtually marries Mary for an offspring. He abandons Mary and Ellie for one of his student. He is secretive about money to Liz and manipulates her for his health works and other deeds.

Liz is hanging out with Charlie to be with the memories of Julian.

Thomas has run away from home and stolen money from church. He is trying to convince Charlie to align Charlie's thoughts with himself. He adamantly wants to make Charlie believe what he believes.

Among all these villainous characters, the viewer is able to see the human condition. The viewer is able to sympathize with Charlie to some extent. This is the result of extraordinary work of Darren Aronofsky.

The metaphors are in your face
27 April 2023
Part 1 - Intro: It's about gender inequality and less focus on male models in the industry. 6⭐

Part 2 - Carl and Yaya: It's about the effect of that inequality on the societal gender roles. Plus, a glimpse of what happens when someone plays power game in a romantic relationship. 8⭐

Part 3 - The yacht: It is a commentary on the hierarchical system established in the society. Plus, there's a battle scene between socialism and communism. 7⭐

Part 4 - The island: This segment is about what happens when there are no forces of society. The whole hierarchical system comes crashing down and everyone is equal. Then, people find their new skill sets and a new hierarchy emerges. 8⭐

Going okay, but the ending
8 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was empowering women in the initial 80%. The women were depicted as single, in a big city, independent, they can do whatever with their bodies without any repercussion until the end. The end was twisted which depicted that the ho-phase is negative. They showed that it was Hannah's ho phase that made her lose her love and her best friend. And then to make the story even more lame, they corrected everything in last 5 min to give a happy ending. It was all cheesy and cliché through and through but I don't think that's a problem. If you're a liberal, you can give it a try on a slow Sunday afternoon.

Perfectly five stars
27 November 2022
This movie is exactly what it says to be. There are hot bodied, slim, white, young people all the time on the screen, all the time. And it's summer, so that's a good excuse for them to be practically naked. Aand it's 80s, so nips. Nothing mentionable happens in the movie. All characters are one dimensional. So, it's total eye candy. As a pansexual, I could do anyone in the movie, anyone, including Ed Burns, especially Ed burns. Worth it!

Now, IMDb is still asking for 159 more characters. Do I want anything more to say? No. Do I have anything more to say? Yeah, why not. Take this filler and fulfill the required character limit of 600 characters.

Social commentary with extravagant cinematography
14 October 2022
In the opening scene of the movie, it is mentioned that the movie is based on true events, but it was not told on whom it is based. So, it is really hard to believe those claims. The cinematography is beautiful, but the story is so complicated that it is hard to believe that it could be based on true events. It feels as if all the known social taboos are depicted in one joint family. The movie comments on child marriage, multiple wives, teen pregnancy, lack of healthcare, pressure on wife for birthing male child, extra-marital affair, incest, social status, dowry, marriage consummation pressure, suicide, female infanticide, etc. Etc. There is no lack of content in the movie, yet the progression feels slow because of less dialogues and multiple scenes of inanimate objects. I liked it for this very reason.

4 stories of danish-thai marriages
4 October 2022
It is a documentary, but does not contain any reenactments and interviews, but life as it happens. It feels very unnatural that the movie production team was allowed in such intimate moments. I feel that people would act different without the camera.

There is also a bias of storytelling. The production team already has a theme in mind, so they will shoot and edit the shots to fit the story.

The movie was marketed as it was shot over 10 years, but it was shot in two phases with a gap of 7 years. But it must have taken a lot of effort in shooting in 3 countries and multiple locations. If these stories would have told in a dramatized movie with the same budget, there would have been a better chance of monetary gains.

Before midnight but first meeting
24 September 2022
There are only two kinds of movies: One, driven by stories and two, driven by character development. If you sat thinking this is a funny story, you will be disappointed. This is a movie driven by character development of Nancy Stokes from conservative to liberal. And such movies are solely run on acting. Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack acted so well that they have lifted up the movie to the level of classics. Writing dialogues and screenplay is also very important for such movies and Katy Brand aced it. The scenes look organic and flow seems natural. There are 2 unexpected events in this movie which (in my opinion) were not required. The movie was very good without them, but they do not take anything away the movie.

Recommended to all the liberals.

I am not sure what Joseph wants the audience to take home? In my understanding, the title means that the boy thinks that he knows his babysitter completely. The film is the visual representation of his infatuation.

Tried dark humor, but missed
2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. It is a low budget production. All the scenes have been shot indoors in a big hall. There are 2 fight scenes in this 15 min film. One of them is skipped and the other is shown in stills. No blood shown in both of the knife scenes.

2. There was no story how the girl was recruited for practicing flirting.

3. There was a giant plot hole in the story that initially, aliens were shown to hack the brains, but later, they show that the gay guy remained gay.

4. If the aim of the aliens was to spread the seeds, why to use the body of a female?

Non-linear storytelling reduced the emotional impact
15 May 2021
Such a nice story and screenplay. Audience would've connected better with the linear storyline though. Taking away one star for that.

It was so intense that I was stunned and couldn't blink during the end credits. Felt like it was a 20 min content.

Your regular American teenage girl, but in a conservative Muslim family
8 May 2021
I watched this short after watching the feature and it did not feel like it is the work of the same writer/director. The feature felt so formulaic and restrained, whereas this one told more story, shared more emotions. This one also felt more true to the title as it gave much larger proportion of screen time for Hala's sexuality and skateboarding rather than the feature in which sexuality was toned down (For an attempt at PG-13 certificate? For release in middle-eastern countries?) and skateboarding got diluted trying to depict a "typical" Islamic family in America.

Stuck in the rut
8 May 2021
I had some expectations because of the good reviews, but the story fell flat and didn't go anywhere. The girl feels bound in religious customs forced by strict parents. The smart Asian girl gets admission into the college of her choice. She ditches the religious boundations. Oh, come on Minhal Baig! I have seen your other titles. You can de better than that. I am not denying the possibility of such a household in the country, but America needs a positive representation of Islam to break the mindset of a typical American of an Islamic family. Titles like Arranged by Diane Crespo and Stefan C. Schaefer would be much more appreciated.

Screwed up timeline
8 April 2021
The makers of the movie thought that making a linear timeline movie is not cool enough. One of the reason I thought they did it is that all fun scenes might get concentrated in one section leaving other parts dry and sad. But that can be ruled out. There is comedic relief all over the timeline. Except this, I cannot think of any reason why they jumbled the timeline badly. It's not two linear timelines (like Barfi!) or inverse timeline (like Memento), it's just whichever scene editor deemed fit wherever, they patched it. This hampered my ability to feel for the characters.

Misuse of non-linear timeline
25 March 2021
This movie could have been better with a linear timeline. It started with Katie as the main character, and when Abby took the center stage, I was confused. And even when Abby was the main character, Katie at the sea shore scene was coming repeatedly, which made no sense in the staggered timeline. When you are making a film about depressed, suicidal, gay, teenage girl, make it about that depressed, suicidal, gay, teenage girl, not some other bullied, lonely girl.

Concept = flawed
10 January 2021
The concept is that when you open the recliner, time goes back a minute. The flaw is that if you were not on the recliner a minute back, you should be at the place you were. But that doesn't happen in this short. And hence, the whole story is a big plothole.

Weak
3 June 2020
It feels like this was supposed to be a feature length film, but due to budget issues, it was cut short. The story seem rushed. There was no time for character development, therefore, I was not able to connect with Deekin. Was the girl in the first scene Deekin's girlfriend? Amanda didn't pay anyone for editing, or for background score/music either; so editing seem lose and score irrelevant. Bryan Lyons isn't a dancer either, which was a major theme of the video.

Halsey: You Should Be Sad (2020 Music Video)

Losely related to the lyrics
19 January 2020
The lyrics are judgmental and disapproving of one's ex. They also express hatred towards ex and relief by breakup. I was expecting a video of flashback scenes with the ex and sad, drunk protagonist in the present. But, one should never expect one thing from a music video. This video is a very unrealistic portrayal of hanging out at a club after breakup with a lot of skin.

Not in accordance with the lyrics
7 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
According to lyrics, Katy Perry is terrestrial and Kanye West is extra-terristrial. But in the music video, Kanye is not in the romantic relationship and Katy is extra-terristrial. Also, I expected the video to be much more sexual than it is. I also did not like the shaky and tilted camera work.

Is it Mulholland dr 2? 'coz I don't get it.
8 June 2019
Looks like some well funded arty director ruined a well written screenplay by uber complicated metaphors, weird camera angles, unrealistic ambience and unnatural story progression. I finished watching it only for beautiful cinematography.

Runner's day off
23 September 2018
This movie is about a long distance runner who takes a day off from her regular practice schedule due to strain. Movie's every scene is based on her interactions with other people/things. All other characters are one dimensional. I feel that even her character is not well developed. It seems like she has been practicing very rigorously and alone, which made her emotionally stunted. She is not able to react to social situations normally. Her communication skills are very poor to the level that it feels unrealistic.

The usage of quotes throughout the movie is a fresh idea, but it is more suited for a high adrenaline movie. Also, the vocalization of quotes is not fluent. The camera work is sloppy which makes scenes slogy.

If you are looking for a running movie, this is not the choice. But if you want an indie with a piece of life of a runner, then you can go for it.

Should not be called documentary, it's a video.
24 July 2018
To be called a documentary, you must only present facts/truth backed by evidence. It is lacking in this movie. Meaning of samadhi is tried to be explained using analogies, but it failed terribly. Most of the facts presented are distorted. Sometimes, they are plain wrong. Pacing of the voiceover is kept slow to give a pseudo sense that the things being told are deep and you will take time to understand. Video seemed pushed. It looked like they recorded the audio first and then searched the Internet for images/footage which would fit the context.

Your usual commercial drama film
6 July 2018
The trailer is not true to the movie. The trailer gives an image that it is going to be a very fast paced biography drama filled with crime. But in reality, it is moderately fast paced movie about a one day event told in retrospect. The story is strong but at many places, it becomes so dramatic that it seems unrealistic. Whole "spin the bottle" scene is unbelievable. Many unrequired comic elements are added in an otherwise serious drama. Writing is very good. It actually gives meaning to many little things, which you don't think are important in the beginning. It doesn't leave any string untied at the end. Direction is okay. Camera work could have been much better. Music is good, but sometimes overbearing. Ending is typical to the Indian taste, always happy. If that's what you're looking for, then go for it.
