The Good Place (2016–2020)
10/10
The Rarest of Gems - Enlightening & Hilarious & Warm
8 May 2023
The Good Place is not what you expect, it's better.

It's so much more interesting. It's witty, and there is a relatable and multifaceted, dynamic character for everyone. I admit, it starts out a little kooky, it took me a few episodes to make up my mind. But is a wonderful comedy with drama and heart.

I don't want to give anything away. That said, this show pivots abruptly, but wonderfully. Just when I thought this show was falling into a predictable formula, it metamorphoses into something different.

Each of these actors surprised and delighted with their performance. The writers did an amazing job, and they concluded perfectly. Most serials that have the option to renew for one more season take it until they run the show into the ground - NOT The Good Place. Four rich and purposeful seasons is what they created. I don't give many 10/10 ratings, and I love good quality writing and performances.

I can't say this about much media, but I genuinely feel that our society would be better if all people watched this show in it's entirely. It's beautiful and meaningful and really makes one think about what's important, between all the hilarity.

If I were a teacher, I'd want to have my students watch it. Everyone enjoyed this from my husband (who is hard to hook on a serial) to my middle school son, to my cynic sister.

Give it 5 episodes before you make up your mind.

Lego Masters (2020– )

Best Reality Competition Show Ever! Positive Competition + LEGO!
2 June 2022
Not only are the LEGO creations on this show beautiful to behold, but the vibe is competitive but still positive and wholesome. I am not a huge reality TV fan. To be honest, I don't generally like reality TV at all due to the emphasis on drama and betrayal in thd genre. I don't want to watch people behaving badly. I like watching admirable people.

LEGO Masters is different. It's competitive, but not nasty. It's teams of two working creatively together under time constraints. It's a little meta too because it sort of pokes fun at reality TV itself. The challenges they give the teams are really fun.

Also, Will Arnett is a delightful host, and there are some fun celebrity guest appearances in season 1. Finally, the LEGO design judges are great. I especially love Amy, (her fantastic Scottish accent is a bonus every episode as well.)

I hope they keep this show going for season 3 and beyond. We are watching it on Hulu, but I know they had it on Fox originally.

Temporal Anomalies, Philosophy and Coming of Age
20 February 2022
Groundhog Day type premise, as is obvious from the trailer. This was better than I expected it to be. Definitely a teen coming-of-age movie with a little mystery, sci-fi scenario and rom-com lightness. Best movie about teenagers I've seen in a very long time.

It's nice to see well made films where smart teenage characters have good dialogue and do some soul-searching. I was refreshed that the teen acting of the central characters and supporting characters exceeded my expectations. This film explores loneliness, anxiety about the future, grief and romance. Groundhog Day came out when I was a kid and is still one of my favorite films. I recently saw Palm Springs (2020) with Andy Samberg and J. K. Simmons, and I loved that as well. This has some of that with the coming-of-age, "gain some maturity and be less selfish" lessons. The tone reminds me of movies like Big (1988) with Tom Hanks and '13 Going on 30' (2004), but those are about suddenly waking up and being a decade or more older.

This film has the wholesomeness of The Princess Bride, and some of the angst of my very favorite teen movie of all time 'Can't Hardly Wait' (1998).

Really fun, just don't expect any good scientific explanation for the time loop. If you didn't like Groundhog Day, you won't like this.

Drunk History (2013–2019)
10/10
So funny, and I learned. Please make more!
19 April 2021
Absolutely one of my favorite comedic shows to watch. This is so fun to watch with friends, or alone. (It's not just watching someone be drunk and tell a story.) Most of what you see is other (not drunk) actors in full costume acting out and lip syncing (pantomiming?) what the storyteller is describing.

I see that the last season was 2019. I really hope that it was just a 'pandemic pause' and they make more in the future. So many brilliant actors participated in this, and there are so many little know stories to tell. Please make more seasons!

Ask the StoryBots (2016–2019)

Intelligent and So fun for kids and adults
4 August 2019
First, I'm pretty selective. I have no patience for stupid programming, especially stupid programming aimed at children.

Storybots is smart, funny and memorable. Weird Al does a bunch of the music, but their are several other contributing artists. They have celebrity guests, and Judy Greer is one of the main characters.

Their music sticks with you
