Unmemorable, okay finale for Indiana Jones
16 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who grew up with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as their first Indiana Jones movie. This latest entry, Dial of Destiny, suffers from the same story problems that Crystal Skull has.

Action scenes lack the practical stunt magic of the original Indiana Jones trilogy, Harrison Ford is 80 years old in this installment and so Indy's action scenes don't have the same punch as 40-years-old Ford of the original trilogy.

I'm personally completely okay with my childhood heroes not being their heroic, best selves and having flaws. However, while Ford gives his best as an aging Indiana Jones, the movie only touches on Indy's character conflict in the beginning and end of the movie.

The new villain is a forgettable neo-Nazi compared to the memorable, over-the-top Nazi villains of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Mads Mikkelsen's Voller and his henchmen are magically able to locate where the heroes are, and lack any actual evil acts to make them memorable.

There's also Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character, Helena Shaw, a self-serving mercenary character that has a rushed redemption arc at the movie's time traveling climax. Helena's character is portrayed as completely money-hungry and not caring about Indy, with only two short scenes before she suddenly becomes concerned for Indiana Jones.

As the final entry to the Indiana Jones movie series, I personally thought Dial of Destiny was disappointing. Indy's and Helena's character arcs are barely developed and his final adventure lacks any memorable set pieces and moments.
