Tommy (1975)
Fabulous, and highly underrated
(Possible spoilers...maybe...) This is by far one of my favourite movies. In my opinion, the Who do an excellent job of making their point about religion, but one has to realise that that isn't the only point they are trying to make. The stardom and obsessive admiration Tommy achieves also points a finger at many people's obsession with stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, and how they can get way out of hand. For example, in the case of Marilyn Monroe in particular, there is a temple to her where Tommy's mother takes him to be cured. The Who are making statements not only about religion, but about popular culture in general and how it is taken too seriously. The music is brilliant. Although it is different from the album, I still greatly enjoyed it. I think both the movie soundtrack and the Who's album are definitely worth hearing. I love the overall impression that this movie leaves you with. It has an excellent cast with an original and symbolic storyline, and I was very impressed with Roger Daltrey's performance. 5/5
Radio Free Roscoe (2003)
Pleasantly surprised
A couple months ago, my friend casually said "You know that Radio Free Roscoe show? It's actually not bad, I kind of like it." The commercials for it hadn't really done much for me, but I generally agree with her taste in such things so I checked it out. Yeah...I'm kind of hooked now. I seriously love Ray. He's a really great character, and the chemistry between him and Lily is great. Many people have criticized the believability of this show. Alright, obviously four teenagers wouldn't be able to hold an illegal radio station for very long without getting caught, but who wants to watch actual reality on television?? Honestly? Go watch the news if it's such a problem. It's a fun idea for a show, and I think RFR offers great and original characters and I really hope it stays on the air for a long time.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Excellent
Being a great fan of musicals, and a rather obsessed musician myself, I was a little wary of this movie due to what film can sometimes do to a masterpiece. Well, I didn't have to be. While many have been bashing this film for a number of different reasons, I strongly think that this is one of the best films I have seen in a very long time. Even if the music hadn't been as wonderful as it was, it was visually incredible, and I can't even begin to imagine how much work went into it. Hats off to Joel S.; I think he did a fabulous job. I loved the atmosphere that was created, and the way the characters were portrayed. The depth of the Phantom was made very clear, as was his immense power and control over Christine. Many people have been cutting down the Phantom's singing, but honestly, take it in context with the story. He sings very much in character, displaying a hint of deranged madness in his voice. And face it, he's got high expectations to live up to. We all know Micheal Crawford is amazing, but that doesn't mean you have to sound as good as he does to deliver a fantastic performance. Emmy was also wonderful; what seems to be being said about her is that she was somewhat emotionless. I do not agree at all; she carried her role beautifully, in an entranced, almost bewildered state. I thought this movie was absolutely beautiful and I would definitely see it again. And again.
