Mondo New York (1988)
This is art buddy!
Time and time again people criticize what they do not understand. People have fear of death or taboo of sex yet they really do enjoy watching TV. So when a real life documentary of the New York City sub-culture comes out, it is just too weird.
This film covers a lot of New Yorks underground scene. Poetry, performance art, illegal transactions and some really good comedians (one at least made it after this film).
If you are a fan of avant-guard or even a little twisted, check this one out. I first saw this 1n Portland, Oregon in 1988 and watched it once every five years after that. Each time, I really enjoyed it, but then again I am a bit twisted.
Liebestraum (1991)
sensual, artistic and one of the best films in over a decade!
This is a film that is thought provoking to say the least. It is romantic and also a little tastily sleazy. If you liked dead again, you should like this film. This film, however, is much better. What I don't understand is why this film is so unknown and underrated.
Mystery, intrigue, romance, regret, desire, jealousy, greed, it is all here. History unfolds to give the viewer a tapestry of cinematic beauty. Some of the film shots are in the vein of Dario Argento's Suspiria while the story and plot are much more caring and romantic.
I would say that this film is a mixture of David Lynch, Roman Polanski and Wim Wenders rolled up into one hidden classic.
Diva (1981)
There are classics and then there are classics!
Diva is one of my top favorite top 100 films. The direction was fantastic and the photography (scene shots)great too. The film is filled with different emotions. Ie: desire, lies, style, crime and on and on. It was one of the great 80's films. Up there with The Hunger, Liquid sky and other films like Sid and Nancy or Something wild.
If you check out the films that they say you might also like if you like Diva, not even close to the same level; sorry. If anyone can recall "Wings of Desire" (1986), this is a great piece of cinema and a classic! If you like one, you should like the other even though they are worlds apart. Class above most: 4 1/2 out of 5. Not much today made above 1 1/2.
