Scream VI (2023)
The Franchise Has Taken The Wrong Turn.
I'm a massive fan of the Scream franchise, it's my all time favourite franchise and horror. I saw the first movie 9 times upon release and have loved every single Scream movie made, including Scream 3.
After Scream 2022, an excellent requel, I was so excited when Scream VI was announced so soon. I wasn't too upset that Neve Campbell wasn't going to be returning, I felt with the new cast that it could continue without her. And then there was the announcement that Kirby Reed would be returning, and I was so hyped.
Scream VI didn't work! I'm beyond disappointed. It didn't feel like a Scream movie, it was incredibly slow paced and at times ridiculous. Even the dark humour was missing. I really don't understand what the writers were doing here?! A few chase scenes and some grisly gore doesn't make up for a lack of script and substance. This was so rushed, I was concerned that it was already written by the time Scream 2022 was released. Though I have to admit that the trailer gave me hope.
There were so many issues with this installment. Whilst I respect that sometimes you have to switch up the formula a little so keep things from getting stale, this was so far removed from any of the Scream movies that I really wasn't watching a Scream movie.
Some of the new characters were poor, I'd guessed the killer or killers (not giving any spoilers) within 40 minutes, it was the easiest killer guess in the franchise history, and so was the motive. Some of the acting was atrocious, this also was the reason why it was so easy to predict. What happened to Kirby? I know it's 13 years on, but her brilliant persona was completely absent and her whole personality and demeanour was so different that she was no longer Kirby. Plus she could of been written in so much better.
I really am so unbelievably disappointed. I feel robbed by this installment. It was almost bad. I don't understand the high ratings and reviews. If you're a die hard Scream fan like me, this surely had to be disappointing for you? If there's a 7th installment, I beg the writers to please return the franchise back to it's original format, and hopefully bring Neve back and pay her what she brings to the franchise.
Red Rose (2022)
Great Start That Declined Into Watchable And Mediocre
First off, I have to give props to the music department for filling this series with some classic and nostalgic 90s bangers. The soundtrack definitely scored well, and the strange but haunting choir version of Aqua's Barbie Girl was a strange but pleasant surprise. Anywho, spoilers coming up below.
As others have said, the first two episodes were good, then it slowly declined. I feel this would of fared better as a supernatural horror, rather than a deep dark Web mystery thriller. I found it watchable though and at times was intrigued as to find out who was behind Red Rose. But then it got silly and far fetched, not to mention dragged out and slightly irritating. New game whilst watching this. Take a drink every time you hear the name Wren. You'll be on the floor by the 3rd episode.
Going on the first two episodes, I did actually assume that it was supernatural, kind of like a cross between The Ring and Countdown. I feel it would of been more interesting if they'd gone down that route. But instead, it was some deranged individuals on the dark Web, who for reasons I couldn't figure out, with all of their power and knowledge of technology, why they chose to mess with a group of nobody's from Bolton of all places! Quite the average bunch of boring teens who get drunk in a field in good old Bolton, England. If you know, you know. They could of messed with anyone. So that was confusing. If you had the technology of Red Rose, surely you'd pick on far more interesting people, such as Korean's. Oh wait, that was right at the end. I felt at times like I was watching Hostel 3, in terms of viewers bidding on and messing with these teens. But good old Jaya faked her death and saved the day.
Average time passer, great soundtrack, silly plot.
I wonder how much The Gardener and Co spent on all of those cameras?
What Lies Behind the Walls (2022)
I Endured This For 15 Minutes
The acting was horrific. Typical low budget worst actors Lifetime movie that was irritating from the first bit of dialogue. 15 minutes was too long. Who are rating these movies a 6.1? I wonder what these people consider bad if this is good? Have they ever even seen a really good movie? Aside from the handful of good Lifetime movies per year they are all like this now. Can we bring back 90s quality Lifetime please?
