Love Me (2021)
Raw and real
Whilst this show may not be a good fit for some people, the story, acting and so much more here makes this series "top tier". Each actor here carries a role so complex, brilliantly.
There are no weak links here. The story is seamless, the cinematography outstanding and for me, I am finally able to feel Australian cinema has finally arrived in a competitive world of media, with a huge bang.
The emotional journey here is all too real, cleverly interwoven in one family with the war between loss and grief combined with love and life.
Simply brilliant and unmissable. Do yourself a favour and consume every intense moment of this wonderful series.
Daisy Jones & The Six (2023)
Unmissable brilliance
It's actually hard to write a review that does this justice. You'll fall in love with each and every character, yes. The story is compelling and whilst the end is revealed at the start, in no way will you see the end for what it really is. The script is spot on every step of the way and the acting faultless. The music is as much a part of the experience of course and I've certainly added a few tracks to my collection thanks to the series, so it can't be all that bad!!
Do yourself a favour and watch this, end to end and don't miss or skip anything because in the end, you'll need to really have felt every jarring moment, if you want to really feel the end as you bloody well should.
Baby Driver (2017)
Has it all
Everything from plot, acting, content and cinematography etc is on point here. The structure around a superb soundtrack tops this off to round out a movie that can be enjoyed time after time.
I don't review a lot but when it deserves a serve, good or bad, I feel it's important to share. In this case, I'm going to reach fir the sky and say that I can finally answer the question, "favourite movie if all time". Not because it's the best movie of all time, but because it really ticks every box so brilliantly. I have watched this movie at least 6 times and already know it will be an annual matter at least.
The Sandman (2022)
Gets in your head
You know that feeling don't you? Maybe it's a religious thing for you, or that ever present second thought.... That gut feeling. Whatever you call it, Sandman brings those feelings to life in an eerily accurate way.
I found myself enveloped in not just a terrific story/plot, but and ever growing need to know the path ahead, that I was not after all, a delusional person snd that the feelings, the senses I get, are shared among gay us all.
As for the devil.... Just brilliant to cast that way and plant that seed if doubt in our minds.
Loved every minute of the series snd just cannot wait for season 2!
Last Light (2022)
Fails in almost every way
Acting lets this down. The plot is completely implausible (other than the scientific idea behind the "weapon") but the way it's portrayed also has .... A pathetic conviction. The world ending is down to one scientist and there's two Mercedes vans with useless MI6 teams approaching the not so menacing villain in his canvas tents .... Blah blah blah.
There is just nothing plausible here, from acting to plot to directing. I'd love to have better news and trust me, I've looked for it but for any half serious thriller movie seeker, this just fails in all its glory.
I wasted my time so you don't have to. Do yourself a favour, give this a miss.
The Old Man (2022)
Gets going in episode 2!!
You have to have episode 1 to make sense of all that follows, so don't judge the series on that episode alone. This is a fabulous story, told really well, with a stellar cast that does absolute justice to the writers and the viewers alike.
Unmissable.
The Twelve (2022)
Raw and real
Understand what you are going to watch so you are ready for the onslaught of real world Australia. Clever and compelling viewing, thanks to an excellent score with terrific acting by all.
If you can't watch, it's only because you recognise how real some scenes are and that can make you squirm. A sign the story and acting has achieved its purpose.
Night Sky (2022)
Could not finish episode 1
I consider myself highly tolerant when it comes to my watchable rating of almost anything. Given the actors here, I had high hopes.
Sadly the storyline was so arduous and tedious in the first episode, I just couldn't bring myself to waste more time in the vague hope it could survive to the extent I'd tolerate and enjoy seeing the wonderful actors I love, doing what they do best. Despite these actors, there's no saving grace in the story trying to be told.
Disappointed that it wasn't just that but better.
Safe (2018)
Suspenseful- just as you'd expect!!
Loved this from the get go. Great story line with enough to get and keep you guessing without letting anything be so obvious. Great acting all round and was left wanting more.... MUCH MORE (please?).
The Tourist (2022)
Could do without the demeaning of Australians
If you can find a way to put aside the truly appalling manner on which the remote Australian personalities are portrayed, the story is worth seeing through to the end. In rating this a 7, I have ignored the treatment of Aussies but I do want to be clear that filming this was was completely unnecessary. So why? It did nothing but detract from what was otherwise a great opportunity to tell a good story really really well, in a spectacular and highly appropriate location.
Could have easily been an 8 for me. In truth, it feels more like a 4 because I feel cranky about the portrayal of Aussies in this.
Spenser Confidential (2020)
Meh - no suprising elements BUT do you expect any?
Run of the mill, everything you expect without any surprises. Same old formula and easy to watch, just don't raise your expectations and its perfectly fine.
Wake Up (2019)
Poorly put together on the Cheap
The cigarette in the lead investigator's hand at the end, sums this movie up. It was so fake it distracted us almost to laughter at what was meant to be the dramatic and serious climax of a shocking ending. Cheap and poorly executed. The end was drab and predictable as much as any other part of this patchy put together piecemeal of a "movie".
Two stars was being generous.
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
True to the book
I am amazed at some of the reviews of this movie. If you had not read the books, the movie will certainly be taken out of context to a degree, but if you HAVE read the books, what is the problem? The movie really does the book justice and remember people, there are three books and there will be three movies! The movie is a to be continued saga and if you know the ending, surely you can appreciate the movie as it is?
I for one thought the movie was really good. Its not about the sex and those who trumpet that notion, really don't understand the real story here. It is a love story after all and yes, for sure on the darker side of life but it is that darkness that is resolved through the course of the books and at the end of the day, a troubled mind is given peace.
My only criticism is that Christian Grey did not have the presence I felt that he had in the book. Having said that, within 15 minutes I had acclimatised and accepted him. Anastasia is brilliant as per her character in the books.
If you enjoyed the books (you have to have read them all to understand), I can only say I think you'd enjoy the movie. If you haven't READ the books, the movie will be hard to judge as anything but a very strange movie without much of a story line.
8/10
