Creed of Gold (2014)
Do anything else than watching this
This is simply terrible in every aspect including acting, dialog and mainly the script
Asides from the author having no clue about how things work in the real world (classes at college, security clearance, financial transactions being printed out and kept in a warehouse, the leading financial body of the world doing a hard reset of its IT where all data is lost, etc.), there are only thinly veiled undertones to conspiracy theories.
Even when working on a limited budget, filmmakers should be able to bring across a certain amount of character development, sympathy for the protagonist and so on. These people are just reading their lines as generic as possible, there is no life in anybody, and the characters are stereotypes, even with the names.
Too bad to be a serious movie, too bad to be an enjoyable fun watch.
The Encounter (2010)
Could be interesting, is just your typical preachy fluck
Synopsis: everything in life is less important than loving Jesus. Even when confronted with the inconsistencies in his answers (which by the way would make great lines if uttered by a psychopath killer in an actual horror movie) God/Jesus will insist that he knows what's best, like letting someone rape you and punishing him after the fact.
I guess somebody saw Identity and thought he could just insert Jesus, use the lowest budget possible and pass it off as something thought-provoking. And rip off the devil/DeVille joke from 101 Dalmatians in a way that tells the audience "you are too stupid to get it, let me literally spell it out for you".
Sorry, but when you are the all powerful and loving God and are confronted by what you actually did like genocide and your answer is "just love me" or brush it off completely, you come off like an abusive spouse.
And by the way, if you not buy into his stick you will get killed in a tragic accident. Lovely.
As you might have guessed by now this is a boring and bad movie. Avoid.
The Shack (2017)
The smooth Jazz of Christian cinema
I have no idea what this movie is supposed to be or for whom or what the meaning is
It starts out as a murder mystery but the whodunit is totally dropped midway through. No other person except the main character is shown to cope with the tragedy the family is facing, we only should care about his hallucinations. And the police is like, ok another missing person, probably murdered, whatever.
The God in the movie of course is Christian (trinity), a black woman and native Americans also are involved and this almighty being can resolve problems (to hell or heaven) only in binary ways. Jesus (oh yeah he is there too).
So no substance, way too much unnecessary sweetness/kitsch, formulaic and nothing interesting happening - the smooth Jazz of Christian cinema.
Freud (2020)
Boy did this fall down the rabbit hole in a hurry
Starts out interestingly but after episode 2 it's mostly downhill The last 2 instalments are ok for an overall underwhelming product.
It is generally well acted, everyone tries hard, sometimes too hard. The characters are mostly stereotypes with not much to them and of course everyone has a dark secret in the past. Or is crazy because you know incest, drugs or just because.
Still, the story feels stretched out to reach 8 episodes. It definitely would have gained a lot by cutting out the middle which features mainly orgy-type settings and scenes with somebody crawling round in blood and other fluids. I guess it is obligatory today to have your leading actors running around naked for what seems like the director said "Keep rolling I want to see how long she can keep it up,"
So for me the idea of a Hungarian rebellion against the Habsburg monarch involving some old mythology cause nothing else.has worked with a touch of the new Sherlock Holmes elements would have been enough but ... obviously there was something extra needed. It ruined the whole thing.
Kandidaten (2008)
Well worth watching
Quite typical Scandinavian thriller in that everybody seemingly has demons, is grumpy or drinks too much plus the colours are bleak.
Nevertheless the story holds your attention and though the main character behaves sometimes rather curiously the twists are surprising and the end worthwhile. It would benefit from cutting maybe 10 minutes.
If you like films like the adaptations of the Adler-Olsen series you will like this one.
Hereditary (2018)
Waste of time
Very disappointed afer reading the previews. It is not so much frightening than bad as the story gets stupider by the minute.
The last half hour is a total waste. I don't understand the glowing reviews at all. It cannot compete with Rosemarie's Baby which it quite obviously is trying be an update of.
Only decent performance is by Tony Collette but even she drifts into really bad overacting by the end. Nobody in this film behaves halfway rational which drags the score down even further.
Quicksand (2019)
Too long, boring and simply stupid
Dissatisfied by a 6 parter that could have been easily been a tight 2 hours.
The characters are dull, nobody deserves sympathy and you feel no empathy whatsoever.
The main character is not traumatic after what she did and what happened up to the shoting nor does she report being raped by her psycho boyfriend. After a party she is shown to be totally stoned, she is clean enough to send the a$$ mentioned earlier over the edge by texting him to kill his father, then is shown to miss him in the standoff from 2 meters, "accidentally" killing her best friend before shooting him and we are supposed to feel sorry for her. By the way to only surviving witness is made to look like a moron.
I hope for a second season, lasting 21 minutes where the verdict is overturned because of obvious manipulations of the main witness by the defence attorney and she goes to serve her 14 years for killing 2 people, encouraging her psychopath friend to kill his father and willingly taking part in a mass shooting.
So no, don't waste your time watching this unless you want to feel angry afterwards for wasting time watching non-sympathtetic but entitled characters who act stooopid if one is generous.
Sweden usually does better.
Red Lights (2012)
Starts out well finishes in the drain
Very disappointing as one gets the feeling that the charlatans will be exposed using science. But it finishes with a twist just to have a twist though it's absolutely illogical.
Chances missed throughout the last 30 minutes.
Aquaman (2018)
How can anybody give this more than 5 stars?
To make it short: too long for the story that's told (which is full of holes and straightforward illogical), bad acting especially between the two leads and other than CGI there is nothing memorable that will make you think about the film after 2 weeks. Plus the absolute worst villian ever in a superhero movie. Seriously, if I am the poor guy that had to wear that helmet I would laugh my way off the set.
Seriously go see wonder woman if you want a passable DC movie.
