Housefull (2010)
Kill them ALL!!!!
What a horrendous piece of crap?!!! I sat there gaping at the screen in stunned silence as scene after supposedly funny scene played on it. At one point I considered just drowning myself in my glass of Coke, but then I thought, this isn't my fault!!! I should kill all those who associated with the film... perhaps that would calm my blood-lust. Enduring this sorry excuse for a comedy is like pulling your nails off with pincers... No, wait... that would be less painful than enduring this.. Crappy performances, stupid and plagiarized jokes from Meet the Parents and Night at the Museum ( amongst others) which a 3 year old would cringe at, insipid dialog and the stupidest directorial effort( non-effort, really) that i have seen since Christ walked the earth make this film one of the dumbest to date. Sajid Khan should stick to stand up routines ( preferably in hotels and dhabas) so that we don't have to endure his stupid arrogant face on T.V. To sum it up.. DON'T WATCH THIS SCHMUCK!! Watch some paint dry instead.. Vastly more entertaining... AND OH, SHAME ON YOU, AKSHAY KUMAR...
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Tarantino's Tour De Force
What a film this is, ladies and gentlemen.. If you still haven't watched it and are browsing for reviews here on IMDb then you are wasting your time! Go watch it!!! I have been a Tarantino fan ever since I watched Pulp Fiction, but I am glad to say that in my opinion, Tarantino surpasses even that masterpiece with his latest effort. The script is terrific and original, the pacing is just right. Tarantino is an old school film maker. He doesn't use choppy editing in his films and allows the scenes and characters to flesh out. It is this trait of his that makes the film so effective. Watch out for the very first scene of the film and you will know what I am talking about. Its a joy to watch. This is the kind of film which you can watch more than once and find something new to admire each time. Tarantino outdoes himself in this film. The performances are all top-notch. Brad Pitt delivers one of his best performances as Aldo Raine. Eli Roth is great too. But it is Christopher Waltz who takes the cake with his eccentric portrayal of the "Jew Hunter". If you are still reading this, get your butts off those chairs and go watch the movie. The Best Film of The Year 2009!!!
Avatar (2009)
Visually Stunning but lacks a good screenplay
Avatar... The name of the highest grosser ever.. Also, the name of the film which lost to The Hurt Locker at the Oscars.. I have seen the movie on the day it came out and although I enjoyed it, i didn't feel the kind of emotions I felt when I watched The Return Of The King or Star Wars. The film felt empty somehow, hollow. All spectacle and no script, thats how I would describe it. One thing which I realized was that the 3D rendering was merely a gimmick, it didn't help the story (what little there is) any. After a while I forgot I was watching a 3D film. The action sequences could have been awe-inspiring, but they were just perfunctory. The film does entertain, its a James Cameron film after all, but it doesn't draw you into its world like Titanic did. Avatar is a great looking film, but there isn't anything else in it. Hope Cameron learns from this and tries to write a better script next time. It may be the highest grosser but it sure isn't one of the best films I have seen. Watch it if you must.
Public Enemies (2009)
I am shocked that this doesn't have an Oscar Nomination
Public Enemies is one of the best films of 2009. Michael Mann directs this film with his usual brilliance. The performances by Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, et al, are exceedingly good. It is Mann's direction that takes the cake though and it is indeed shocking that this film did not receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Film and Best Director instead of the mediocre The Hurt Locker. For me this is Michael Mann's best film since Heat. Everything is handled with such care which is difficult to do, considering that this is a period film.Johnny Depp gives one of his best performances as John Dillinger. Christian Bale impresses with each new film of his. His performance as Melvin Purvis is suitably restrained. The screenplay is one of the strong points of this film. The shootouts are exhilarating without being unrealistic. Watch out for that superb sequence involving a shootout at a lodge. Finally, watch the film if you are a Michael Mann fan like me or just a movie buff. You'll not regret it. Trust me.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
A Highly Overrated Film
The Hurt Locker is one of the most overrated movies ever. Although there are some good sequences in the film, they never really amount to anything. There is very little plot in the movie. In other words, this film has no purpose. Most of the characters are cardboard cut-outs. The only exception to this is the protagonist of the story(whatever little there is)played brilliantly by Jeremy Renker. The film meanders all over the place. There are episodes in the film which are very loosely connected (if at all) to each other. This certainly isn't my idea of "The Best War Film In Years", etc... Watch Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan instead. They are far better examples of the genre. Kathryn Bigelow's direction is one of the weakest efforts I have seen and I will be highly surprised if she wins the Academy Award this year. Indeed, I am astounded that she was nominated at all. Just because she is a woman is no reason for a nomination. Michael Mann for Public Enemies was a much stronger contender. All in all, I feel this is an average, flawed film which suffers from a weak screenplay and terrible direction. Watch it at your own risk. If you liked Platoon or the other war films I mentioned, then there is a good chance you will hate this one.
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
The First Indian Epic Masterpiece
Yes, you read that right, it is indeed India's first epic masterpiece. Mughal-e-Azam, does'nt hold a candle to Ashutosh Gowariker's magnum opus.A brilliant film in all respects,Jodha Akbar scores not only in the story department, but also in the acting and visuals. Ashutosh Gowariker and his team brings a bygone era back to life in this larger than life extravaganza.Everything from the clothing to the jewelry to the gigantic sets put the viewer right there in the prime of the Mughal era. Visually, the movie is a sight for sore eyes.Never has any Indian film been so impressive as far as visuals go. The opulent splendour of Jodha's palace, the battlegrounds, the Rajputana kingdom are a treat to behold. Actingwise, Hritik Roshan outdoes himself. Clearly, this is his best performance to date. Seldom does a character from a movie takes on a life of its own.Hritik breathes life and energy into the role of Akbar, making it his own.His body language, his voice and his expressions are chiseled to perfection.Aishwarya Rai's performance as the Rajput princess is superb. She depicts her character's transition from a reluctant wife to the Empress of India with aplomb.Other actors fit their roles with ease. Gowariker's direction s top notch. Enough said. The background score is highly effective. The music is soul-stirring. As for Hritik, he would do better to stick to these kind of quality cinema rather than act in brainless farces like Dhoom 2 which cater to an equally brainless audience. That said, I would recommend JA to all who liked Troy,or other epics along the same lines.JA's strength lies in the simplicity of its story.
Casino Royale (2006)
Eat Dung,Jason Bourne...
I will keep it short and to the point....Casino Royale is one of the Best Bond Films o come out in a long time...indeed it is THE BEST MOVIE OF 2006. Now my title may be intriguing to some of you. Let me explain. Some reviewers of the Bourne movies had said that Bourne had blown Bond out of the water. This movie proves how wrong they were. Not that I didn't like the Bourne movies. But I LOVE Bond films. There is no movie franchise which can beat 007. NONE. My comment is biased ,prejudiced , full of vengeance even. But what matters is that it is TRUE as millions will attest worldwide. Craig indeed is the best Bond of all.He has outdone Connery. He plays Bond so well , you never feel for a moment that this guy is acting. His screen presence is memorizing to say the least. His action scenes and is droll humor are TOP NOTCH. I look forward to Bond 22. Welcome Back Mr.Bond...and Eat Dung,Jason Bourne..
Dhoom:2 (2006)
Pathetic!!!
Over-hyped, overrated and bluntly stated, A BAD movie. After a promising opening scene , Dhoom2 quickly goes from an action thriller to a mas-ala film. Juvenile jokes galore courtesy Uday Chopra, the viewer wonders when the film will get on track and become the action thriller that the trailer promised us.Aishwarya Rai is irritating as Sunehri..Enough said. Abhishek Bachchan is his usual controlled self. Uday Chopra goes overboard in some scenes. Hrithik Roshan...well much has been said about his so called BRILLIANT performance in the film...To tell the truth, the performance is just OK.He doesn't get much scope to show off his acting skills here. The character of Mr.A , although initially starts out as a perfect, cold ,calculating thief, deteriorates towards the end and becomes a half-baked and confused character. But the make-up artists job was good. The stunts were good also but we have seen better in Krrish.Much has been said about this being an ACTIon film...I beg to differ...A total of 3 action scenes amidst a pathetic and boring screen play is not my idea of an action film. There is just one good chase and thats it. The rest is pretty ordinary. The film makers are confused and it shows. In SHORT A PATHETIC FILM.SOme IDIOTS, including a pigheaded reviewer from a reputed English newspaper in India have compared this piece of balderdash with Casino Royale! What can I say...except that they are Nincompoops..to-put it mildly... THis reviewer in the newspaper even went on to write "WHats the story in Dhoom2? DO we really need one?" those are his words...I ask you...What kind of person watches a film lacking a story? Really pathetic reviewer...
