Don't Look Now (1973)
Wonderful directing
Don't Look Now is set basically in Venice, Italy, where John Baxter (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura (Julie Christie) has settled after the horrible death of their daughter. When in Venice, Laura meets two strange sisters, one of them a blind psychic person, who claims that she has seen the couple's daughter. At the end of the movie, you will sit there with your mouth wide open, and just gasp at it.
This picture is beautifully directed throughout, and starts with the excellent cross-clipping between Sutherland working and his daughter drowning. This becomes an extremely tense and powerfully shocking scene, without getting scary. Great editing! Sutherland and Christie gives performances worthy several Academy Awards in this movie, and works very well together. The love scene was breathtaking, once again, the editor was brilliant.
Sniffer (2006)
Surreal short
Bobbie Peers Sniffer was the first Norwegian movie ever to win the Palme D'Or in Cannes, and that was really my only interest in seeing this film. I'm glad it won, otherwise I would never have seen this surrealistic masterpiece.
The plot itself is weird. A man pushing his head to the wall, it may look like. But very soon, we see that he is lying in the seiling. Everybody in this film is walking around with some heavy boots strapped to their feet, apparently to keep them from flying away. When the man from the ceiling notices that birds fly around freely, he unstraps his boots and fly away.
It's not very easy to say what the movie is about, but what I think of the films theme, is that it is about people afraid to fly away from the things they know. There is no dialogue in this film, yet it is very effective because we here the sound of the heavy boots the people are wearing and the strange, sometimes creepy music.
A Christmas Carol (1984)
Extremely overrated
Saw this movie in my English class this afternoon and was surprised by how bad this version was. Don't get me wrong, George C. Scott was terrific as Scrooge, but the rest of the cast fails so very badly. Sometimes I couldn't stop laughing at the stupid acting and the repeated line: "Merry Christmas to everyone!" Other times I almost fell asleep.
The movie is based on a Charles Dickens short story about a rich guy, who don't think Christmas is nothing but humbug. After 30 minutes, the rich guy is visited by three ghosts, who persuade him to celebrate Christmas after all.
I can not understand how this movie, with a script so bad it must have been written in five minutes, can be so well-rated. Instead of this piece of garbage, I recommend to you, the Bill Murray comedy Scrooged. That at least, was funny...
Thriller - En grym film (1973)
Grym? Yes, but not grym enough for that title...
So, this was actually the first movie that Sweden ever banned... How interesting!
Well, I cannot see how anyone could ban this... Of course there are some pornographic scenes and some of violence, but this is nowhere near how disturbing I thought it would be. First of all, the main character is mute, and that means all the talking is done by the bad guy, Tony, or Heinz Hopf as his real name is. I don't know why he was cast as this guy, because he sounds like he is in a typical classic 70's porn! The other actors sucked as well, and when the movie runs extremely slow, like this one does, it isn't very funny much fun to watch.
Now, the positive elements: The music was very cool, you can really feel that Quentin Tarantino was inspired by the music in this when he made Kill Bill. Also, the story was brilliant, a classic "rape and revenge"-movie (it could have been)...
By the way, grym means cruel ;-)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Funniest movie ever!
Today I saw this wonderful movie for the first time in my life. And it will not be the last! From the moment the first image hits the screen and until the "Kazakh National Anthem" finishes it all, this movie is one big laugh.
This is the movie where Sasha Baron Cohen's character Borat goes the "U, S and A" to make a "movie film". We get to meet his village in Kazakhstan, a little town called Kuzcek, three miles north of fence to Jewtown! After this short introduction, he is sent to New York with his fat producer Azamat Bagatov. When Borat sees an episode of Baywatch, he falls in love with Pamela Anderson and goes across the country to marry her. Along the way, we get to see a whole lot of anti-semittism, homophobia and nude-wrestling. And lots of other funny stuff too.
This movie is the funniest movie I have ever seen, and also one of the best comedies ever. This also makes it the best film of the year in my opinion. I believe Sacha Baron Cohen will be remember as one of the greatest comedians of this century!
Subspecies (1991)
Could have been worse
First of all, let me make it clear. This movie is a real piece of garbage, but although it is a real piece of garbage, it is an better piece of garbage than it could have been. It could have sucked big-time, but it doesn't...
What this movie didn't have, was for example scary moments, good acting and a good script. It wasn't very entertaining either. But the movie had cool music, fancy locations and hot girls. It also works great as a Dracula spoof. (hope it was meant that way, although I really don't think so)
The story focuses on three girls in Transylvania, awaking an ancient vampire, which then terrorizes and kills the girls, one by one. Sounds familiar? Yes, so it does!
After reading through this, you may think that I should have given it a better vote. The reason I don't, is because I almost felt asleep at some points...
Loose Change: Second Edition (2005)
Interesting, but boring and unbelievable
Loose Change is the documentary that says the Bush-administration was behind the 9/11 attacks. Personally I think this is a crazy idea, and I still do after seeing this movie.
There are many flaws in this movie. The plot itself is just absurd, and the makers haven't really managed to make it any more believable. Only one time, I thought there could be something in anything the annoying voice-over guy said. The movie became very boring at some points. Overall, an interesting conspiracy theory with no connection to the real world, except for the fact that the World Trade Center actually was attacked.
A movie like Loose Change could rather have been made as a work of fiction. Loose Change would have made an excellent thriller.
Metropolis (1927)
Movie-making milestone, but boring
OK, first of all. I'm not some kind of action-junkie who thinks that the Rambo-trilogy is the best movies of all time. I am a person who think that other silents like Nosferatu and The Battleship Potemkin are entertaining.
Although I loved the previous movies referred to, I thought this was one of the most dull movies ever. As entertainment this movie can't go very far. On a scale rating it's abilities to entertain, it gets a 2/10 from me.
As a milestone in the history of movies, it goes all the way to the top. The special effects were great to have been made almost 80 years ago. The editing was great. It must have been one of the most expensive movie made to that date. On the scale of how important a chapter in the cinematic history this is, I will rate it a 10/10.
That means a total 6/10. This also means that you should rather check out really good silents like Chaplin's Modern Times, Eisenstein's The Battleship Potemkin and Murnau's Nosferatu.
City by the Sea (2002)
Too slow
This medium Robert De Niro film opens with 50's footage from Coney Island. We get to see the beach in the summertime with lots of happy people. After the opening titles we see Coney Island in autumn. The weather is gray and the atmosphere is depressing. The latest pretty much sums up the rest of this crime drama about a cop who's father was executed for killing a child and who son is wanted for murder. The story is original enough and the acting isn't bad. Especially William Forsythe, who is playing the role of the drug dealer Spyder is excellent.
Although all the great acting and hole less plot, the story sometimes moves too slow. The love story between Robert De Niro and Frances McDormand is not good enough, and her character could easily be cut from the script. Her acting is also the weakest in this movie.
Ungdommens råskap (2004)
OK documentary
This "dogumentary" shows the life of teens on the east side of Oslo. I believe it is pretty realistic, and I am really happy I live on the other side of town.
This film focuses on the immigrants from the Middle East and Pakistan, mostly the "problem children". They don't care about grades or school at all. Although I do not personally know anyone who is this bum-alike, I definitely recognize this type of people from school.
The movie is made after the dogme rules of Lars Von Trier. That means that we get many short cuts, showing short episodes. Often too short. That is why it doesn't get a better rating from me. But if you have the opportunity you should consider to watch it.
