Twisted (2013)
One of my favorites
I used to watch Twisted with my best friend, and there was never a dull moment! Twisted is a seriously addicting TV drama with plot twists that make it all the better. Towards the end of season 1, the show becomes a hot mess that is still majorly addictive and fun (if only to figure out what the writers will throw at you next). I can't describe why Twisted's "Ex-murder Convict Meets High School With Fresh Romances And A Brand-New Murder Scene to Investigate" premise is so good. it just is. The show only gets better from there. Amazing performance from Avan Jogia.
Great while it lasted. Wish they hadn't cancelled this show.
The Fosters (2013)
Fails to be relevant
The Fosters is addictive in all of the same ways as a bad soap opera. The show is plausible, but not at all realistic. The teenagers in The Fosters go to high school on a beach and engage in all sorts of antics that I don't remember experiencing. The drama is 90-95% dialogue and tends to be very over-the-top. And, while I'm a huge fan of comedies, but The Fosters doesn't have a lot of genuinely funny moments.
The only thing that makes this show stand out from other family dramas is its "real-world relevance." And, while I admire the risk that the writers took with trying to create an open discussion about gay marriage, race relations, safe sex, parenting styles, etc. the script dialogue tends to come off as lecture-y, as if we're hearing the same opinion over and over again with plot dramas that revolve around verifying those opinions. The Fosters is biased towards teaching us the writers' perspectives on controversial issues, but I always leave the show feeling unconvinced and frankly a little bored.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
Completely Terrible
My sister made me watch this one with her, and all I can say is that it is the worst movie I have ever seen. It was incredibly cheesy and incredibly predictable. The plot bounced around so fast that it was hard to care for any of the characters. Also, does the world really need another movie about unloved orphans? My sister justifies the bad and rushed "plot" by telling me that it is three books combined into one movie, but I don't think that really justifies anything. The characters were cliché and the villain was cringe worthy. I have never read the books, but the movie was so god-awful that I wouldn't even attempt it. Maybe this movie might have been better if I was eight years old and really, really bored.
