The Idea of You (2024)
The epitomy of trauma bonding and reinforcing unrealistic romantic expectations
There are already millions of movies, books, and songs training us to believe that we can be loved in spite of any issue, without making any other effort than showing how much you love the other person.
It's hard enough to get that mental image out of one's belief system, why add one more?
So the characters meet (let's suspend our disbelief from the magical her getting in his trailer without any obstacle), and he's immediately smitten for life, just based on her looks, and the fact that she doesn't melt in front of him right away.
I can accept that that's a breath of fresh air, but still, to be so into someone just from that means you have issues.
I'll concede that this is expressed in the movie:
She has abandonment issues from the way her ex treated her, and he has insecurities due to not feeling good enough.
So it's very clearly romanticising 2 insecure people trauma bonding.
A famous rule in dating is not to talk about your ex on the first date.
Yet, when she takes him home, for the first time they truly talk in a calm setting, he barely presses and she overshares af.
She even tears up, saying how disrespected, undervalued, and still not recovered she is (otherwise why still be so emotional after 3 years?).
And he doesn't run.
He isn't even deterred for one second, ever.
And she doesn't question his maturity from this.
Just because he used a known technique to charm her initially.
And even for that last one, she leaves him because it reminds her of past trauma.
And she doesn't even concede that the method might have been similar for every girl, but the intentions were different.
So from all that, she's clearly not self-awareness, and immature.
He is as well, but probably has a lot deeper issues, to have the end we got.
The 2nd time she breaks up with him, when he says "maybe in 5 years etc.", she says it will be too late.
Yet, he shows up at her gallery.
Without having known her that well, nor talked to see where she's at at that point, nor taking no for an answer.
What does that tell emotionally immature girls and women?
That whatever you say, the man will not respect that, but will do what you actually want later down the line, because he magically knows your heart.
And that tells guys that they can do whatever they want, and it will be well received.
To me, the age difference is not even relevant in this story.
They could be the same age, the issues I described above would be exact the same.
At best, what I liked was the depiction of how being a fan can be detrimental to the person you claim to adore so much.
Just like going back again and again to someone who clearly told you they didn't want to pursue a relationship with you...
Fallet (2017)
Bring it back!
This show is hilarious, smart, a very rare mix of Swedish and English, and there are several very interesting plots that are not yet explored.
The characters have depth, which is not something that is encountered that often nowadays.
It truly deserves to be watched and prolonged.
There are many Swedish crime shows, but almost none that have humour.
This show is unique in so many ways!
The main characters have their own traumas and intertwine beautifully.
I'd really like to know what Tom's deal is, how Klas became a member of that secret society, how Sofie is going to deal with her past trauma that kept her immature, etc.
Season 1 was great, just keep them coming!
Emily in Paris (2020)
Full of clichés that are going to be believed by non-French
We don't smoke inside, nor do "la bise" to strangers in a professional setting. Our men certainly don't hit on you, except if they're riff-raff, but we use dating apps and sut up, like everyone else. Also, French men don't particularly like older women, the president has been criticised ever since he ran for presidency because of his wife. People are divided on the subject, and so on.
So yeah it's not conveying the cliché of the cat old guy with a béret on the head, a baguette under the arm, and saucisson in the hand, but it's still conveying a false image of the French.
Room 104: Voyeurs (2017)
Beautiful and emotional
I was so moved by this episode, even though it has no resonance in my personal life.
The dancing is in itself beautiful, the story is subtly and smartly ran through,
It's an amazing work of art, my favourite episode so far.
Harmony (2018)
If you've ever felt that pain in your stomach because of loneliness or love, you'll like it
I really liked it, and I'm not a teenager, I've seen thousands of movie, am a member of Mensa, and have nothing to do with the movie industry whatsoever.
I've seen actually bad movies, and this one is not that. The acting was excellent, very believable, the filming was of satisfactory quality.
So yeah, I liked the movie a lot, maybe because I could relate to the main characters: like them, I've felt different most my life, I've felt extremely deep love, and kindness.
I usually dislike action movies, and the fact that I liked this film probably means that it's not an action movie as you would imagine it.
Maybe the people who didn't like it were expecting more action, or more "funny" lines (you know, the usual stuff you find in Marvel movies, with a supposed-to-be-funny line every 10 seconds)...
If you like stories, and excellently displayed feeling and transcending oneself, give it a shot.
La casa del fin de los tiempos (2013)
Great surprise
Prior to watching this film, I thought after reading the synopsis, that it would be another attempt at a horror movie, one more, with an ordinary scenario.
How wrong was I. First of all, it doesn't last for ages before it all starts to unravel and become interesting, and keeps delivering surprises all along.
This film made me reflect on some aspects of life and I shed a few tears, as unexpected as that also was when you're supposed to watch a horror film.
The reasons why I don't give this a 10/10 are that it's a little long in the beginning I think and that even though I abundantly stated that it was surprising, it's more because I've become so used to seeing the same scenario in every other movie that as soon as something slightly innovative come along, I get over enthusiastic, but to be fair, some of the plot could be guessed.
So all in all, a superb movie, that really found resonance in me, because of several other aspects of life you could apply the plot to (realistic aspects of life, of course).
