Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Big shoes to fill...
Overall, AoU was a good film... but given the last 2 Marvel movies that were released, the problem is that the expectations have grown tremendously. I thought CA:TWS and GOTG were absolutely incredible, and so, came into the cinema with possibly slightly inflated expectations. AoU delivered on most of those expectations... Here's 2 things that I thought let it down:
1) New characters - Not enough in terms of character development. There were far too many existing characters/new ones/returning ones bouncing around and time limitations (and this isn't a short movie either) basically meant that none of the new characters got developed enough... not even Ultron (IMO). It almost felt like they decided to throw in a paragraph for each new character and call it a day.
2) End Battle - Without giving away anything, I thought the final battle didn't feel like one. Something seemed lacking in terms of build up and peak... and as such it ended up feeling more like a large speed bump rather than a roller coaster.
Don't get me wrong though, as I mentioned earlier, everything else I expected out of an Avengers movie had its box ticked... I still enjoyed the movie. Just not as much as I would have if the 2 issues above were ironed out... It almost felt like Joss tried to do accomplish too much with this single movie; create Avengers movie, add new villain, add new characters (a bunch), add tie-ins, add forward links to next movies, etc. That said, I'm still excited to see what's next for Marvel.
Gallowwalkers (2012)
Don't even bother...
I decided to give this flick a shot based on the "decent" looking trailer and Wesley Snipes. This isn't the first time I've been fooled by a decent trailer, and I'm sure it isn't the last. That being said, this is my attempt at not letting anyone else get fooled by the decent trailer and the fact that Wesley Snipes is in it.
The story is absolute garbage. The cast is terrible. Dialogue is corny. The only saving graces for this movie are corsets and cleavage. If Wesley Snipes wasn't in this movie, I'd assume this was a F-grade (if that even exists) movie. Because Snipes is in it, I kindly give it an E-grade.
In a nutshell, I have no idea how this movie even got greenlit and I pray that nobody else wastes their time on this steaming pile of crap.
The First Time (2012)
Best of recent times...
I'm not a big fan of the rom-com genre in general mainly because of the way the genre has been in recent times, but the trailer had some decently witty lines that caught my interest. I was pleasantly surprised by the movie - it completely lacked the feel that all recent movies of this genre have had.
It had a very 90s rom-com feel to it... kind of like "Can't Hardly Wait" or "10 Things About You". Combined with a pretty good soundtrack (despite the fact I didn't know any of the songs) and a good cast. So if you like the happy-go-lucky 90s feel to movies, definitely give this a go.
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Better than expected!
Surprisingly, Resident Evil: Afterlife appears to be thus far the best action movie of 2010. Possibly because I wasn't expecting much after the blatant Matrix rip-off-fest that was the trailer.
There is an actual storyline (I won't spoil it for anyone) which isn't half bad... and that's saying a lot for an action movie!!! Typically, I don't expect anything when going to watch an action movie, so take this into consideration when raising an eyebrow at my "not half bad" comment.
Cast-wise; no complaints whatsoever. Then again, not many guys would complain when the cast includes Milla Jovovich and throws in Ali Larter. Wentworth Miller showing up in the context of the movie made me /facepalm while I heard whispers of "Prison Break" and sniggering from various other movie-goers around me.
Action; this is where the Resident Evil franchise has always been top-notch and it doesn't disappoint this time either.
Overall, I'd give it a 6/10. Minus 1 point for stretching the Resident Evil movies just a little too much...
Rogues Gallery (2010)
Absolutely terrible...
Story had potential but ended up being badly executed. Cast had potential but most of them died before my seat warmed up. Action was ridiculously short in some instances, and ridiculously drawn out in others. Only watch this movie if you want to check out one or all of the ladies in the cast. The movie apparently falls under the Action, Drama, and Comedy genres; and yet somehow manages to fall short on all accounts.
In a nutshell: 1 point for Maggie Q, 0.5 points for Emilie de Ravin (would have gotten 1 except I kept seeing Claire from LOST who was similarly insane), 0.5 points for Odette Yustman, 0.5 points for Rob Corddry and 0.5 points for Adam Scott - for a grand total of 3 points.
The Expendables (2010)
An action flick lacking action?
Story: Somewhat sub-par plot that was almost entirely illogical. Seemed to wander about aimlessly to me... and a friend who was watching it with me managed to fall asleep. I'd average it at 2/10 - it would actually be 1/10 but I gave it an extra 1 point because I never really expect an action flick to have much of a story anyway.
Action: Err... for an action flick, there was an odd lack of action and way too much talking; especially from Mickey Rourke. Even the bits that did have action were disappointing to me - except for the opening scene which gave me high hopes and then proceeded to sink like a stone. 4/10.
Overall: 3/10... Props for having a cameo by Willis and the Governator... If anybody asks, I'd tell them to not bother going to the cinema and just rent the Expendables off Netflix or whatever DVD rental company you prefer whenever it does go to DVD.
The Last Airbender (2010)
Should have asked Beckham about bending instead...
IMO M. Night Shyamalan has always been a hit/miss kind of guy... I figured after his string of (IMHO again) 4 misses, this should have been a hit based on the trailer (I keep telling myself to never trust trailers but never remember when the time comes). It all started falling apart as soon as I saw the opening credits and Nickelodeon.
Acting was mediocre at best (0.5 points); many times during the movie I found myself with my face in my palm. A couple of times I actually considered leaving the cinema to go buy something to eat.
Storywise I felt like a psychic (0.5 points); I had a feeling there was going to be a part 2 about an hour into the movie when the bald tattooed kid had only just started learning how to bend water. Plot twists (they were more like bends rather than twists) were about as easy to see through as cling wrap.
Remaining 1 point comes from having a single reasonably cute girl playing the princess.
Might have tricked me into watching this one but I'll be skipping the 2nd (and any subsequent) for sure.
