Al midan (2013)
wow
The square is a powerful documentary about Egypt not having any human rights living under the rule of President Mubarak. Both Muslim brotherhood and The Revolutionaries teamed up to protest against Mubarak's rules considering they were living without dignity. They were fed up! Although, Mubarak did not allow that and he gave power to the police to do whatever they can do to get rid of the protesters. They tortured, beat, and killed them. It was a tragic moment at the time but the Muslim Brotherhood and The Revolutionaries still fought back to reclaim their rights and build the country themselves as unit.
i would give this an 8 out of 10 because it was very powerful in away and it really gave me a lot of respect for these people.IT isn't fair to see people who have to fight justice for their country.
Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013)
Something you never notice until you watch this
No one really notices how important background singers are. Background singers are the ones who provide the strong vocal harmony with the lead singers. Most background singers can sing as good as the lead singer which is crazy because the background singers can't have their own solo albums.
20 feet from stardom is a hidden truth about the story of background singers who sang behind some of the most popular artist in music history. It's a touching film that explains what it was like to be a background singer who never really got a chance to make it to the top. I never really notice that background singers had a tough time with the discredit of their natural born talent.
The Act of Killing (2012)
craaaaaaazy
In this documentary The Act of Killing is about former Indonesian death squad who killed lots of innocent people and decided to reenact all of the fictional scene into a movie. The vigorous leader of the death squad, Anwar Congo inspired many people in Indonesia to execute anyone who was a communist. Lots of people in Indonesia group together as an unofficial military of the country. The people who were communist were unfairly persecuted by people that were supported by their government. The communist people believe that they wanted everyone to be equal and heard. It's insane to me because I live in a democracy where u.s. citizens get to choose who can run over our country. We get to have privilege and equal rights. Although in Indonesian they do things differently. It must be hard to be someone who is poor that lives in Indonesia and can't make up their own choices. If they try they will be persecuted. It makes me very uncomfortable and I feel a lot of sympathy for the children, women, and men who were once killed. However this documentary made me surprise was the ending. When I watched Anwar reacted to his own movie. He soon realizes that what he did in the past was very bad. He thinks to himself that the emotion that he acted out for being an innocent person getting killed in the movie isn't worse than the people who were really getting killed. He started to have respect and empathy. It amazed me a lot. I didn't think he would care. This is sooooooo crazy!
Dirty Wars (2013)
wow
In this documentary called Dirty Wars a guy named Jeremy Scahill investigates and reports about the tragic events that happen to innocent people run by a secretive military group. This powerful documentary tells the truth about the secret military group which are known as the Joints Special Ops Command also known as the JSCO. Their commander, Admiral Mcraven runs JSCO and tells the highly trained military personnel what to do. This was killing innocent Middle Eastern and east African families. An American citizen Anwar AL Awalaki was a Muslim preacher from the US who talked about the JSOC more than Jeremy Scahill. Anwar was getting angry with the US government because the media was making him into a terrorist. All that Anwar wanted to do was stop it. After that he was on the kill list for the US government. Meanwhile he left the US and went to Yemen to hide and then was murdered. Two weeks later his 16 year old son was murdered. What I learned from this documentary was that there are a lot of tragic events in the world that the media doesn't always tell the truth about. Nor, do they give us enough information. It really makes me wonder what else is going on besides JSOC killing innocent families.
Waste Land (2010)
If you are an artist i recommend this for you
The documentary Wasteland is about the story of how Vik Muniz discovered the art of recycling. He goes to Brazil where he finds people who are known as pickers. Pickers go to a land fill to go through trash and find valuable things that can be recycled. The landfill is the biggest dump place for trash in the entire country. 100% of Brazil's trash ends up in this land fill but only 70 % of the trash is from Rio, where the landfill is located. Sometimes people will even find dead bodies in the landfill. In the movie there were a variety of pickers who each have their own stories about their life and why they choose to be a picker.
Pickers deserve more honor than they receive. They would rather go through the landfill than sell drugs or get involved with prostitution. There is one young woman who is a picker and has 2 kids. She decides for her life that she doesn't want to be a prostitute. There was a young man who was the most deceiving about the whole idea of being a picker while no one else believed in him he believed in himself. He was very precise and he achieved what he believed in which was a very influential.
The reason why people should watch this is because it's very inspirational and the artwork of what Vik Muniz and the team of pickers did was artistic and innovative. It made it look like it was more than just trash. People who are interested in the art industry should watch this too. Wasteland is the perfect example of a win-win situation.
Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (2010)
this movie was OK
The documentary, "Jean-Michel Basquiat: the radiant child," was about an African American artist from brooklyn New York name Jean-Michel. In the film they talked about the way he lived his life as a kid, the start of him being an artist, and how he was fascinating with his work until his death. A lot of people were inspired by his work because he abused his work physically but in a figuratively speaking way.
Jean-michel Basquiat was an fascinating and very complex artist from brooklyn new york.He was very successful at the work he did in the 80s.People notice the originality of his work, its emotional depth, unique iconography and formal strengths in color. He went from spray painting meaningful graffiti on buildings, to appearing on TV and having his own art studio.Yet when andy warhol died jean-michel became increasingly isolated and his herrion and depression grew more surve.Soon after that he died of a heroin overdose in 1988.
I knew that jean- michel died of a heroin overdose but watching the documentary made it more shocking because it had a lot of emotion towards the people who were in the interview because they knew jean michel personally so it was sad to watch them tear up.A Lot of his friends were in the interview and even the friends he knew before he was an artist.
I give this documentary a 5 out of 10 because it was really enjoyed how they displayed the interview. They went back and forth from when Jean was alive in the 80's to his friends being interviewed in 2010.
