Hoodwinked! (2005)
pleasantly surprised!
I got free passes to see HOODWINKED, not really knowing what to expect. I expected it to be a halfway decent animated kid flick, but found it to actually be quite a treat! Animation was a little weird, but the script was very good, with a real wealth of puns and jokes that most of the kids in the audience didn't get. I'm actually looking forward to future work by these guys, and would recommend this film to fans of SHREK! Some nice work by the actors who did the voices, although I thought Jim Belushi was a little buried under the character. Glenn Close did a really great job, along with most of the others in the cast.
Adventures of Young Van Helsing: The Quest for the Lost Scepter (2004)
Read the book!
Actually, as bad as the movie THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG VAN HELSING is, the as-yet-unpublished novelization is very good. I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of the novelization by R.H. Jones before I saw the movie, and can say that this is one instance where the writer took tremendous liberties with the script...and the result was excellent! In fact, this is a better movie novelization than many I've read. It has a Buffy, the Vampire Slayer feel to it, and I felt like I was reading a TV novelization. Should you have the opportunity to read the novelization if it ever gets published, don't bother ever seeing the movie!
