Marlowe (1969)
Confusing and I like that
Like most people I initially thought this was just average. Changed my mind. This is a very good movie. Stand out performance by Sharon Farrell. The plot is challenging and confusing, but I like that in detective films. Good on screen chemistry between O'Connor and Garner. I've even changed my mind about the opening song, "Little Sister." I've been humming it. This is a movie that improves with repeated viewing.
Angel Heart (1987)
Do we know who we are?
Saw this when it first came out-was haunted. This film asked-Do we know who we are? Didn't watch it until recently-so that's 30 years. It still haunts. After some combat and scotch-it still haunts. Asking the same question-Do we know who we are? Harry is the ultimate tragic character or is he? After reading the boards here and the references to the book, probably not. But, but...I have my own theory. Harry is so identifiable. Not perfect, but pretty decent. Should he be punished for Favorite's sins? Is he Favorite? What happened to Harry? Mickey Rourke in his prime-women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him. Outstanding performance by Rourke.
How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life (1968)
Pencip tips will be broken.
This film is sophisticated. That is it doesn't have teens, sex or gore. What it does have is fantastic writing that ties up all the loose ends. You have to listen closely because the witticisms come in a hurried staccato. Turn away and you might miss something. The pencils. The picket sign Martin carries. The hobos. The folk songs. Muriels thesis on what men think about. At the end guess what happens...a happy ending. That's novel isn't it? We should have a wake for great writing. It's been dead for years. Stella Stevens would have been a star in the old studio system she deserved to be. She plays a good, kind, smart, sexy woman. Dean displays his very natural charm. Wallich is great as an imperfect good man.
Slave Girls (1967)
Michael Carreras...open-minded Genius.
I have had this movie for awhile, watched it a couple of times and was not overwhelmed. I wasn't even 'whelmed. It just seemed prosaic. Watched it again tonight and WOW this is a very complicated movie with undercurrent plots of sexual equality, racial equality and the perceptions of those involved. As a viewer we see those perceptions reversed and twisted around. Carreras even threw in a bit about our cruelty to animals and the guilt of the main character who hunts them. This character, and actor for that matter, seem at first very one dimensional, but both have as many facets as a hunk of cheap zirconia and while zirconia may not have as many facets as a compressed chunk of coal it will still fool a cheap whore. The best part of this movie is that as a whole there is not a bit of condescension in the dialog or the characters. If you don't believe any of the malarkey I wrote it also has phallic symbols galore(if you into that funny stuff), a bond girl(if your into that funny stuff) and an antelope with no pants.
Buon funerale amigos!... paga Sartana (1970)
Sartana IS cool
I Wish there was a pristine print of this movie or I had seen this in the theater. It's just a nifty movie with the plot twisting and turning to the end. I always get a chuckle near the end when Sartana states, "I thought you were an invalid?" The other man replies, "no am I just a lazy man." In this scene Sartana is actually caught off guard for a few moments by some martial arts moves. The music is memorable. Whenever I watch this I always find myself humming the two note when the main them is playing. Then there is the song near the end where it is brass initially and ends with a few notes of a solo guitar. It's as pretty as Abagail.
She Wouldn't Say Yes (1945)
Scenes 8 and 9 elevate this movie
I would agree that most of this movie is a bit stale, but if the entire movie had had the same energy as scenes 8 and 9 this would be remembered as a great screwball comedy. Those scenes have the perfect set-up that Bogdonovich has stated make screwballs work. That is the characters are acting normal and logical to themselves but we know what the characters don't. There are so many characters involved in these scenes but the dialog remains logical. The writing in these scenes is superb. The character progression of Dr. Lane is the major impediment to this movie. As others have said, it's not realistic that she falls in love at the end. If she had slowly thawed over the course of the movie it would have been better.
