La reine Margot (1994)
France vs Russia
Watched 'Margot' on DVD. I recently re-viewed (on VHS) the S.M Eisenstein classics 'Ivan the Terrible, pt 1 & 2'(1945;1946). I cannot help for being struck by the similarities: for one, the history (1572) is almost contemparaneous, the movie settings uses churches and palaces, the musical scores with religious chants, the venomous regent-queen character, the daggers ... EIsenstein's images uses a lot of shadows while Chéreau does not hide that he is an opera director.(posted 21 March '21).
Big Little Lies: I Want to Know (2019)
Lyrics as comments (season)
Next to all other user reviews, mainly about plot & acting, I greatly appreciated the rock score of both seasons. The careful use of historic 60's-70's songs and lyrics added a subtle comment on every episode, right onto the last seconds of each of the final credits (as a 1950-born European we experienced the '67 Summer of Love wave in real time; memories have not lapsed). Furthermore, having visited the USA a few times and actually been in Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea, I also felt a satirical undertone in the portraying of the all-above-average-income-white-class.

Double-billed in Belgium; Freezing question

Re: Yr 26 Jan '17
The first episodes have just been shown on Belgian TV (Flemish channel) following your suggestion 1+2, 3+4, 5+6. As foreigner who visited Canada in 2016, we are sensitive to the apparent "equal opportunity" casting; however, this makes the plot and sub-plots richer. "One question still begs": how to survive Canadian winter, naked in cellars and car boots?

Shocking disposal scene ? (Refer to a 1913 novel)
For those familiar with Dutch literature, they will recognize the wry "disposal" scene as familiar. In the 1913 novel "Villa Des Roses" (the original title is in French), Willem ELSSCHOT set the following scene (abridged): 'And that ?' pointing to a package wrapped in newspaper lying on the bedside table. 'Nothing', said Louise, reaching out for it. Bur Richard beat her to it. ... I a few words he knew everything. 'I think we should get rid of it,' said Louise. ... It was a simple funeral: he went ... by a roundabout route and, on the way, in a deserted street, threw the package with the thing in over a fence." The English translation of this novel has been published by Granta in 2003. ISBN 1-86207-616-2. The 2002 movie adaptation by Frank Van Passel is on IMDb.

What motivates Susanne (the mother): or, what is not said (+ key)
(1) The single quality of this movie, as with all great art, is "what is NOT said/shown", but what the viewer has to make up in his own mind. This being a German movie, could it also be necessary to go back those 30 years, when Susanne (Hanna Schygulla's character) went hiking to India, so mid- to late 1970's. Could she have been this bit leftist-leaning person ? This could explain her resolve finally to support Ayten - after the EU/Turkey argument - and also the break-up with the completely absent husband, Lotte's father (only hinted at in the phone booth sequence). (2) The "Bayram/Abraham's sacrifice" (starts at scene one !) is the key underlying the film and uniting the countries and the characters: /SPOILER/ every one of them is responsible for killing whom he/she likes most but you can repent already "on this side".
